On Disposable People And Human Well-Being: Health, Money And Power, Berta E. Hernández-Truyol Oct 2006

On Disposable People And Human Well-Being: Health, Money And Power, Berta E. Hernández-Truyol

UF Law Faculty Publications

The foundational premise of this essay is that health and well-being are human rights issues. My focus on this theme, specifically within the human rights paradigm, is new, passionate, and personal. On December 15, 2005, just three months before the conference that prompted the writing of this essay, I lost my partner of over 20 years. She fought a valiant, strong, and dignified fight against cancer--a journey I traveled with her. During that time I learned much about health systems and health care. Most saliently, notwithstanding the reality of the extraordinarily good care she ultimately received, I realized there is …

Caregivers In The Courtroom: The Growing Trend Of Family Responsibilities Discrimination, Joan C. Williams, Stephanie Bornstein Oct 2006

Caregivers In The Courtroom: The Growing Trend Of Family Responsibilities Discrimination, Joan C. Williams, Stephanie Bornstein

UF Law Faculty Publications

When people think of sex discrimination, they tend to think of glass-ceiling discrimination and sexual harassment. This article describes and documents a rapidly expanding area of employment discrimination law: family responsibilities discrimination, or "FRD." FRD is employment discrimination against people based on their caregiving responsibilities, whether for children, elderly parents, or ill partners. FRD includes both "maternal wall" discrimination -- the equivalent of the glass ceiling for mothers -- and discrimination against men who participate in childcare or provide care for other family members.

The International Dimension Of Regime Change: Economic Sanctions And The 1993 Democratic Transition In Nigeria, Kelechi A. Kalu Oct 2006

The International Dimension Of Regime Change: Economic Sanctions And The 1993 Democratic Transition In Nigeria, Kelechi A. Kalu

African Social Science Review

Within the context of the Post-Cold War international system, the annulled presidential elections in Nigeria in 1993 and the subsequent hanging of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight members of the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) in 1995, the paper examines the argument for economic sanctions as a tool for international regime change. It clarifies the historical impact of colonialism and how that experience continues to constrain the use of traditional strategies of economic sanction to attempt to influence African governments, especially authoritarian governments. It argues that, if economic sanction as a tool of statecraft is to result in …

Malaysia In The Global Economy: Crisis, Recovery, And The Road Ahead, Daniel E. Charette Oct 2006

Malaysia In The Global Economy: Crisis, Recovery, And The Road Ahead, Daniel E. Charette

New England Journal of Public Policy

This article offers an analysis of contemporary economic development in Malaysia, focusing especially on the causes and consequences of the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis. Malaysia offers an excellent case study in international development due to its role as an export-dependent developing country with a high degree of integration in the global economy. In attempting to determine why Malaysia was enveloped by a financial crisis in July of 1997, a two-level political economy approach is used to separate international policy influences from domestic influences. My findings suggest that a combination of ill-advised, full capital account liberalization (Washington Consensus / international influence) …

Whose Life Is It Anyway?, Kam C. Wong Oct 2006

Whose Life Is It Anyway?, Kam C. Wong

Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal

The article explores the complex ethical, legal, and societal dimensions of the right-to-die debate, emphasizing the need for a nuanced approach that moves beyond simplistic moral framing. It argues that the debate is inherently exploratory and tentative, shaped by cultural and personal values, and calls for a reassessment of existing perspectives to foster creative solutions. The central thesis underscores the inevitability of euthanasia as a societal issue and advocates for balanced policies that respect individual autonomy while addressing broader societal concerns.

Econometric Evidence Regarding Education And Border Income Performance, Christa Almada, Lorenzo B. González, Patricia S. Eason, Thomas M. Fullerton Jr Oct 2006

Econometric Evidence Regarding Education And Border Income Performance, Christa Almada, Lorenzo B. González, Patricia S. Eason, Thomas M. Fullerton Jr

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

This study examines the relationship between education and income in Texas counties that are located along the border with Mexico. Estimation results confirm earlier research for this region. Parameter heterogeneity underscores the increased importance of education in the service-oriented labor that has emerged in recent years in the United States. Simulation results quantify the income gains that could potentially be observed if drop out rates were lowered in the border counties included in the sample.

Sources Of Stress For Department Chairs In Colleges Of Business, Charles D. Pringle Oct 2006

Sources Of Stress For Department Chairs In Colleges Of Business, Charles D. Pringle

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

This survey of department chairs at AACSB-member business schools identifies five major sources of stress in the chair’s job. The most potent of these is the need to balance the conflicting demands of teaching, research, and administrative duties while finding the time to perform them effectively. The others are making major faculty decisions, interacting with faculty, networking, and performing routine job duties. Variables that are associated with increasing or decreasing levels of stress in these five areas are identified and discussed.

Transportation Financing Opportunities For The State Of California, Asha Weinstein Agrawal, Jennifer Dill, Todd Mitchel Goldman, John Hall, Franziska Holtzman, Joe Recker, Eileen Goodwin

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

Significant investments will be required to maintain, operate, upgrade, and expand California's transportation infrastructure if the state is to retain its economic position in the global economy and accommodate a projected near doubling of the current population by 2040. At the same time, available funding for transportation will decline significantly over the next 15 years if the current transportation finance system remains unchanged. This report analyzes a range of alternative sources of revenue, as well as different finance options. The research is based upon reviews of existing literature, interviews with key stakeholders, and two statewide phone surveys. The facility-based sources …
