Wille Zum Wald: Nietzsche’S Discovery Of Forest Bathing, Gary Shapiro
Wille Zum Wald: Nietzsche’S Discovery Of Forest Bathing, Gary Shapiro
Philosophy Faculty Publications
In the fourth part of our “The Forest as a Living Foundation” series, the distinguished American Nietzsche scholar Gary Shapiro investigates new angles on Nietzsche’s bonds to the woods: the philosopher’s personal enthusiasm for what is increasingly called “forest bathing,” the science behind how this practice benefits body, mind, and spirit, and the sheer pleasure of breathing fresh air, in woodland and wherever else we can find it. Shapiro’s essay showcases why this particular Lebensraum matters, not just for our individual well-being, but for the health of the entire planet.
The Forgotten Adl: An Educational Program Addressing Personal Hygiene And Grooming For Older Adults, Ashlee D. Moten, Becky King
The Forgotten Adl: An Educational Program Addressing Personal Hygiene And Grooming For Older Adults, Ashlee D. Moten, Becky King
Summer 2026 OTD Capstone Symposium
Some older adults have difficulty completing personal hygiene and grooming tasks independently and require assistance from an informal caregiver. However, informal caregivers often become stressed and overwhelmed due to limited educational resources and support available. These tasks include all oral, skin, nail, and hair care, such as brushing hair, applying deodorant, clipping nails, or brushing teeth (AOTA, 2020). OTs can help develop interventions to enhance participation in personal hygiene and grooming tasks. The purpose of this capstone project was to create an educational program to equip older adults and their informal caregivers with strategies for participating in personal hygiene and …
Exploring The Occupational Risks Among Human Service Professionals: A Trauma-Informed Approach To Caring For Others And Ourselves, Shaian Kong
Master of Arts in Human Services
It is known that human service practitioners are often expected to maintain empathy, compassion, emotional regulation, and professionalism during high-stress or uncertain situations. These experiences expose practitioners to a unique intersection of trauma. While helping others through their own trauma, practitioners may also experience symptoms such as intrusive thoughts, emotional exhaustion, sleep disturbances, hypervigilance, and avoidance despite not directly experiencing the traumatic events themselves. Current literature highlights these existing occupational risks that may hinder sustained career development, increased compassion fatigue, and affect workplace standards and support. With things like frequent increase in workloads, workforce shortages, and insufficient professional support, practitioners …

Nascent Adam17 Synthesis Potentiates Gpibα Cleavage In Resting And Stimulated Stored Platelets, Shayan Askari, Harriet Ghansah, Christopher D. Mansi, Timothy J. Stalker, Lawrence E. Goldfinger
Cardeza Foundation for Hematologic Research
Platelet concentrates stored at room temperature have a shelf life of 5 to 7 days. During storage, platelets undergo glycoprotein cleavage by metalloproteases, notably cleavage of glycoprotein Ibα (GPIbα) by a disintegrin and metalloprotease 17 (ADAM17), which leads to decreased posttransfusion reactivity and recovery. To investigate the putative roles of nascent synthesis of ADAM17 in GPIbα shedding and platelet function during room temperature platelet storage. Human platelets maintained in autologous plasma were treated with naked endonuclease-resistant ADAM17 or control short inhibitory RNA (siRNA) and monitored for molecular and cellular effects during storage. Platelet-specific Adam17-deleted mice were generated, and the dynamics …

Examination Of The Bureau Of Indian Affairs Public Policy Implementation In Support Of Sovereign Tribal Nations, Erna Mae Faber
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Social and economic disparities in the Midwestern Reservation Community have persisted for more than five decades despite the enactment of federal Indian policy designed to address them. Based on the existing research, the Bureau of Indian Affairs’ (BIA’s) failure to effectively administer programs addressing health care, housing, and economic opportunity has perpetuated systemic inequities that disproportionately affect tribal nation members. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to explore how members of the Midwestern Reservation Community viewed the implementation of BIA public policies intended to support tribal nations through the lens of the resource dependence theory, the narrative policy …

A Soft-Skilled Leadership Development Course For New Nurse Managers, Kiadrick Roshelle Hood
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
New nurse managers are stepping into leadership roles without structured training. While organizations offer various onboarding courses for managers transitioning into new management roles, few have implemented a structured, evidence-based program focused on leadership development, particularly in the soft leadership skills needed to lead a diverse workforce. I designed this staff education project to determine whether implementation of a leadership development course focused on time management, prioritization, and delegation would improve new nurse managers’ self-perception of these leadership skills. To address this gap, I developed a 1-day leadership development course to introduce tools to improve new nurse managers’ time management, …

Southeastern Michigan Firefighters’ Experiences With Their Organization’S Employee Assistance Program, Angela Patricia Johnson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Mental health challenges among first responders require coordinated stakeholder efforts. Although employee assistance programs (EAPs) are commonly offered as workplace benefits, little is known about firefighters’ experiences with these programs and how they can be tailored to meet their unique needs. Existing literature suggested that EAP utilization among firefighters is influenced by program awareness, confidentiality concerns, organizational support, stigma, and the extent to which services are tailored to first responders’ needs. Using a generic qualitative design and policy feedback theory, this study explored southeastern Michigan firefighters’ experiences with EAPs. Purposive sampling was used to recruit 11 firefighters for semi structured …

Some Contributions To Inference And Model/Variable Selection In High-Dimensional Problems, Sayantan Paul
Some Contributions To Inference And Model/Variable Selection In High-Dimensional Problems, Sayantan Paul
Doctoral Theses
In today’s world, we often come across situations where we need to infer about several parameters simultaneously based on a single dataset. This is known as the problem of simultaneous statistical inference and the need for such inference arises for data from the fields of biology, astronomy, genomics, bioinformatics, medicine, economics, finance, and image processing, just to name a few. As the name suggests, instead of being concerned about the optimality of inference for the individual parameters, the main interest here is in proposing procedures which can provide satisfactory results in the overall inferential problem involving all parameters of interest. …

A Metadata Analysis Of Anthropological Scholarship About Haiti And The Dominican Republic, Tess Kulstad González, Pauline Kulstad González, Zoe Grubbs, Hongyuan Zhang
archipelagos: a journal of Caribbean digital praxis
This article presents the results of a metadata and content analysis of anthropological research about Haiti and the Dominican Republic available in the Anthropological Literature database and in the Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Anthropology. This analysis shows that anthropological knowledge about Haiti and/or the Dominican Republic, produced in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, is included less than scholarship published outside the island. In addition, our analysis indicates that research that pertains to both countries, or that considers transnational and/or inter-island processes has been infrequent. Furthermore, that which exists is not as discoverable or visible as research that focuses …

Exploring Abundance Of Symbiotic Cyanobacteria Nitrogen Fixers On The West Florida Shelf, Julia Kiplinger
Exploring Abundance Of Symbiotic Cyanobacteria Nitrogen Fixers On The West Florida Shelf, Julia Kiplinger
OneUSF Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium
Nitrogen is unusable by most organisms but is an essential nutrient for building life. Nitrogen fixers in the ocean, also known as diazotrophs, can produce bioavailable forms of nitrogen for other organisms to use from dissolved nitrogen gas. The West Florida Shelf is of particular interest for research on nitrogen fixers because it is generally oligotrophic, yet diazotrophic activity is hypothesized to increase regional productivity. Our understanding of the distributions of cyanobacterial nitrogen fixers is limited, and broadening this knowledge can inform other decisions and research on ocean health or productivity. This study advances understanding of the abundance of symbiotic …
