Changing Nature: Globalization And Economic Reforms In Brazil, Lucas Gimenes Loureiro Oct 2006

Changing Nature: Globalization And Economic Reforms In Brazil, Lucas Gimenes Loureiro

Theses and Dissertations

Globalization is affecting our lives in ways that we never expected before. Greater interdependence, some scholars argue, weakens the ability of nation-states to retain their authority over individuals and corporations. However, nation-states are highly adaptable and they have the power to maintain their primacy .

Governments have the ability to choose which model of development their economies should pursue. Thus, based on the choice of economic model, nation-states shape their economies and the way business operates within it. In other words, governments will essentially steer their economies in a certain direction, even though they cannot determine the exact path that …

Proof Of Concept Fund Approach To Small And Medium Enterprise Franchising And Marketing Research Findings., Omolara O. Akanji

Bullion

Over the past 20 to 25 years small scale enterprises have exploded in the informal sector of the Nigeria's businesses. The informal sector study (CBN, NISEK 2000) showed that over 25,000 small scale enterprises were in existence in the agro industrial production sector of the economy during the year 2000. This paper proffers a model of funding called "Proof of Concept Fund" as a bridging credit facility to research institutes and small scale industrialist who would want to patent/franchise budding research findings to commercialization. The study reveals that there are substantial empirical studies of countries that have used the Proof …

Forward: Symposium On Interdisciplinary Perspectives On Bankruptcy Reform, Michelle A. Cecil

Faculty Publications

In 2003, over 1.6 million consumers filed for bankruptcy protection, surpassing the previous record of 1.5 million bankruptcy filings set just one year earlier. In an effort to reverse the spiraling upward trend of consumer bankruptcies, and to prevent abusive debtors from using the bankruptcy system to avoid paying their debts, in April, 2005, Congress voted overwhelmingly in favor of passing the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 (BAPCPA). Widely heralded as the most sweeping bankruptcy reform legislation in over a quarter of a century, BAPCPA was designed in large part to force debtors with the ability …

India’S Rise As A Software Power: Governmental Policy Factors, Tad Drozdowski, Hai Huynh, Brian Lininger, Yicheng Peng, Naruedom Sakulyong

Engineering and Technology Management Student Projects

The Indian government’s policies toward an open, global market, support of educational institutions, and enhancement of appropriate infrastructure helped enable their software industry to become critical components of India’s economic growth in the 1990s. The Technical, Organizational, and Personal perspective (T, O, and P) model is utilized to examine different affects that each perspective, inclusive of government policies, has on a socio-technical system (Software development in India). The Indian government has provided substantial economic liberalization to support their software industries, though continued reform is necessary to ensure that they remain a software superpower.

How Does A Child With Sensory Processing Problems Play?, Jeryl D. Benson, Meghana N. Nicka, Perri Stern Oct 2006

How Does A Child With Sensory Processing Problems Play?, Jeryl D. Benson, Meghana N. Nicka, Perri Stern

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

The occupation of play during one’s childhood years serves as a foundation for the development of future occupations in an individual’s life. By understanding a child’s extant play skills and deficits, one may then provide the necessary interventions needed to promote development and successful growth into new occupations. The purpose of this paper was to understand how a child with sensory processing deficits plays in a naturalistic environment. The findings revealed an interplay between the child’s underlying sensory processing deficits and his play skills and behaviors. Increased understanding of how a child with sensory processing deficits plays will provide information …

Approach To Medical Futility In A Community Hospital: Is Use Of A Prognostic Scoring System Applicable?, Sandra M. Terra Oct 2006

Approach To Medical Futility In A Community Hospital: Is Use Of A Prognostic Scoring System Applicable?, Sandra M. Terra

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

All acute care medical facilities and healthcare providers are faced with cases of medical futility. Guidance must ensure the initiation of communication with the patient or family regarding end of life planning. Identification of certain physiological features may provide impetus for such communication. In an effort to identify the physiological variables that may trigger discussion in a futile medical treatment policy, the application of a prognostic scoring system is examined. The Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation Score (APACHE II) system, a widely applied set of acute, chronic and diagnostic variables, is identified through literature review. This paper examines the …

Commandeering And Its Alternatives: A Federalism Perspective, Neil S. Siegel Oct 2006

Commandeering And Its Alternatives: A Federalism Perspective, Neil S. Siegel

Vanderbilt Law Review

This inquiry argues that current Tenth Amendment jurisprudence causes net harm to federalism values under certain circumstances. Specifically, New York v. United States and Printz v. United States protect state autonomy to some extent by requiring the federal government to internalize more of the costs of federal regulation before engaging in regulation. But anticommandeering doctrine harms state autonomy in situations where the presence of the rule triggers more preemption going forward. Preemption generally causes a greater compromise of federalism values than does commandeering by eroding state regulatory control.

While it is a context-sensitive empirical question whether specific applications of the …

Transcutaneous Immunization With Toxin-Coregulated Pilin A Induces Protective Immunity Against Vibrio Cholerae O1 El Tor Challenge In Mice, Julianne E. Rollenhagen, Anuj Kalsy, Francisca Cerda, Manohar John Oct 2006

Transcutaneous Immunization With Toxin-Coregulated Pilin A Induces Protective Immunity Against Vibrio Cholerae O1 El Tor Challenge In Mice, Julianne E. Rollenhagen, Anuj Kalsy, Francisca Cerda, Manohar John

Dartmouth Scholarship

Toxin-coregulated pilin A (TcpA) is the main structural subunit of a type IV bundle-forming pilus of Vibrio cholerae, the cause of cholera. Toxin-coregulated pilus is involved in formation of microcolonies of V. cholerae at the intestinal surface, and strains of V. cholerae deficient in TcpA are attenuated and unable to colonize intestinal surfaces. Anti-TcpA immunity is common in humans recovering from cholera in Bangladesh, and immunization against TcpA is protective in murine V. cholerae models. To evaluate whether transcutaneously applied TcpA is immunogenic, we transcutaneously immunized mice with 100 mug of TcpA or TcpA with an immunoadjuvant (cholera toxin [CT], …

Chemical, Biomolecular, and Corrosion Engineering Faculty Research

Objective Ascertaining how mechanical forces and growth factors mediate normal and pathologic processes in single chondrocytes can aid in developing strategies for the repair and replacement of articular cartilage destroyed by injury or disease. This study examined effects of transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) on the biomechanics and cytoskeleton of single zonal chondrocytes. Method Superficial and middle/deep bovine articular chondrocytes were seeded on tissue culture treated plastic for 3 and 18 h and treated with TGF-β1 (5 ng/mL), IGF-I (100 ng/mL), or a combination of TGF-β1 (5 ng/mL) + IGF-I (100 ng/mL). Single chondrocytes from all …

Designing A Nanotube Using Naturally Occurring Protein Building Blocks, Jie Zheng Oct 2006

Designing A Nanotube Using Naturally Occurring Protein Building Blocks, Jie Zheng

Chemical, Biomolecular, and Corrosion Engineering Faculty Research

Here our goal is to carry out nanotube design using naturally occurring protein building blocks. Inspection of the protein structural database reveals the richness of the conformations of proteins, their parts, and their chemistry. Given target functional protein nanotube geometry, our strategy involves scanning a library of candidate building blocks, combinatorially assembling them into the shape and testing its stability. Since self-assembly takes place on time scales not affordable for computations, here we propose a strategy for the very first step in protein nanotube design: we map the candidate building blocks onto a planar sheet and wrap the sheet around …

Louisiana Survey 2006 (Fall), Lsu Reilly Center For Media & Public Affairs

Reilly Center Louisiana Surveys

The fall 2006 Louisiana Survey noted the beginning of a return to a "new normal" in public opinion following the devastation of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The number of residents who reported optimism that the state was heading in the right direction increased from 2005, but still did not equal pre-hurricane levels. In addition, the 2006 LA Survey explored:

  • the re-emergence of dominance for pre-Katrina concerns such as education, healthcare, and crime in the state
  • an increase in number of residents noting climate change as their number one concern for the future of the state
  • disconcerting trends on perceptions of …

Estimation Of The Rigid-Body Motion From Three-Dimensional Images Using A Generalized Center-Of-Mass Points Approach, B. Feng, P. P. Bruyant, P. H. Pretorius, R. D. Beach, H. C. Gifford, J. Dey, M. A. Gennert, M. A. King Oct 2006

Estimation Of The Rigid-Body Motion From Three-Dimensional Images Using A Generalized Center-Of-Mass Points Approach, B. Feng, P. P. Bruyant, P. H. Pretorius, R. D. Beach, H. C. Gifford, J. Dey, M. A. Gennert, M. A. King

Faculty Publications

We present an analytical method for the estimation of rigid-body motion in sets of three-dimensional (3-D) SPECT and PET slices. This method utilizes mathematically defined generalized center-of-mass points in images, requiring no segmentation. It can be applied to compensation of the rigid-body motion in both SPECT and PET, once a series of 3-D tomographic images are available. We generalized the formula for the center-of-mass to obtain a family of points comoving with the object's rigid-body motion. From the family of possible points we chose the best three points which resulted in the minimum root-mean-square difference between images as the generalized …

Lost Constitutional Moorings: Recovering The War Power, Louis Fisher Oct 2006

Lost Constitutional Moorings: Recovering The War Power, Louis Fisher

Indiana Law Journal

For the past half century, Presidents have claimed constitutional authority to take the country from a state of peace to a state of war against another nation. That was precisely the power that the Framers denied to the President and vested exclusively in Congress. That allocation of power was understood by all three branches until President Harry Truman went to war against North Korea in 1950. He never came to Congress for authority before he acted or at any time thereafter. Similar false claims of authority have been made by Presidents since that time. These constitutional violations have been assisted …
