Effects Of Long-Term Hypoxia On Enzymes Of Carbohydrate Metabolism In The Gulf Killifish, Fundulus Grandis, Mery L. Mártinez, Christie Landry, Ryan Boehm, Steve Manning, Bernard B. Rees

Faculty Publications

The goal of the current study was to generate a comprehensive, multi-tissue perspective of the effects of chronic hypoxic exposure on carbohydrate metabolism in the Gulf killifish Fundulus grandis. Fish were held at approximately 1.3 mg l(-1) dissolved oxygen (similar to 3.6 kPa) for 4 weeks, after which maximal activities were measured for all glycolytic enzymes in four tissues (white skeletal muscle, liver, heart and brain), as well as for enzymes of glycogen metabolism (in muscle and liver) and gluconeogenesis (in liver). The specific activities of enzymes of glycolysis and glycogen metabolism were strongly suppressed by hypoxia in white skeletal …

Embryo Donation: The Government Adopts A Cause, Jaime E. Conde Oct 2006

Embryo Donation: The Government Adopts A Cause, Jaime E. Conde

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

The disposition of cryopreserved supernumerary embryos has become a divisive issue that puts to test the tenets of the "culture of life" promoted by the Vatican and President George W. Bush. The Bush administration has spent millions of dollars to promote "embryo adoptions" while imposing restrictions on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. On the other hand, contemporary Catholic moral theologians and philosophers disagree on the question of the morality of embryo "rescue" or "adoption" because the Church strongly opposes in vitro fertilization, the donation of gametes and embryo cryopreservation, as evidenced recently during the Italian fertility law referendum. …

The Psychological Consequences Of Judically Imposed Closets In Child Custody And Visitation Disputes Involving Gay Or Lesbian Parents, Nancy G. Maxwell, Richard Donner Oct 2006

The Psychological Consequences Of Judically Imposed Closets In Child Custody And Visitation Disputes Involving Gay Or Lesbian Parents, Nancy G. Maxwell, Richard Donner

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

This article examines child custody and visitation cases in which courts operate under the assumption that parents who live openly as sexual minorities will harm their children. Based on this assumption, courts frequently impose restrictions on parents, requiring them to live closeted lives in order to have access to their children. Part I of this article introduces the concept of the judicially imposed closet as courts have applied it through several custody and visitation cases. Part II examines social science research concerning the psychological impact of "family secrets" on parents and children as well as research on sexual minority parenting. …

The Economic Impact Of Early Life Environmental Tobacco Smoke Exposure: Early Intervention For Developmental Delay, Thaddeus R. Miller, Virginia A. Rauh, Sherry A. M. Glied, Dale Hattis, Andrew Rundle, Howard Andrews, Frederica Perera

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Early-life exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) can result in developmental delay as well as childhood asthma and increased risk of cancer. The high cost of childhood asthma related to ETS exposure has been widely recognized; however, the economic impact of ETS-related developmental delay has been less well understood.

METHODS AND RESULTS:The Columbia Center for Children's Environmental Health (CCCEH) has reported adverse effects of prenatal ETS exposure on child development in a cohort of minority women and children in New York City (odds ratio of developmental delay = 2.36; 95% confidence interval 1.22-4.58). Using the environmentally …

A Focused Telephonic Nursing Intervention Delivers Improved Adherence To A1c Testing, Patty M. Orr, Matthew A. Mcginnis, Laurel R. Hudson, Sadie S. Coberley, Albert Crawford, Janice L. Clarke, Neil I. Goldfarb

College of Population Health Faculty Papers

Compliance with hemoglobin A1c (A1c) testing is suboptimal despite the clear national recommendations and guidelines established for care of patients with diabetes. Recent studies have demonstrated a relationship between participation in a diabetes disease management (DM) program and improved adherence to A1c testing. A focused intervention study was initiated to investigate the ability of a DM program to drive improvement in A1c testing. A cohort of 36,327 members experienced a statistically significant increase (29%) in A1c testing while participating in the 6-month focused intervention. This finding demonstrated that a focused DM intervention is able to deliver improvement in a clinical …

Commandeering And Its Alternatives: A Federalism Perspective, Neil S. Siegel Oct 2006

Commandeering And Its Alternatives: A Federalism Perspective, Neil S. Siegel

Faculty Scholarship

This inquiry argues that current Tenth Amendment jurisprudence causes net harm to federalism values under certain circumstances. Specifically, New York v. United States and Printz v. United States protect state autonomy to some extent by requiring the federal government to internalize more of the costs of federal regulation before engaging in regulation, and by addressing any accountability problems that commandeering can cause. But anticommandeering doctrine harms state autonomy in situations where the presence of the rule triggers more preemption going forward. Preemption generally causes a greater compromise of federalism values than does commandeering by eroding state regulatory control.

While it …

Access To Justice, Costs, And Legal Aid, James P. George Oct 2006

Access To Justice, Costs, And Legal Aid, James P. George

Faculty Scholarship

If the ideal of justice is not pervasive in the United States, the issue of justice is-not so much in its rendition, but in its penetration of news, politics and entertainment. Current media issues include the death penalty--erroneous convictions and the lack of lawyers for appeals; tort reform--conflicting data on medical malpractice litigation and a perceived abuse of class actions; and the judiciary itself--judicial selection, political attacks on so-called "activist judges," and the sometimes hidden issue of court budgets. Within this fascination, the multiple problems in accessing justice are lost.

This article is excerpted from a report done for the …

Millimeter-Wave Differential Probe For Nondestructive Detection Of Corrosion Precursor Pitting, Mohammad Tayeb Ahmad Ghasr, Brian D. Carroll, Sergey Kharkovsky, Russell A. Austin, R. Zoughi Oct 2006

Millimeter-Wave Differential Probe For Nondestructive Detection Of Corrosion Precursor Pitting, Mohammad Tayeb Ahmad Ghasr, Brian D. Carroll, Sergey Kharkovsky, Russell A. Austin, R. Zoughi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Critical aircraft structural components, such as wings and fuselages, are exposed to harsh environments that vary considerably in temperature and moisture content. In most cases, the corrosion is hidden under paint and primer and cannot be visually detected. The initiation of corrosion is preceded by the presence of corrosion precursor pitting. Near-field millimeter-wave nondestructive testing (NDT) methods have been successfully used for detecting corrosion precursor pitting in exposed as well as painted aluminum substrates. However, near-field millimeter-wave measurements are susceptible to clutter that may mask indications of small defects such as pitting. Standoff distance variation produces an unwanted intensity gradient …

Linking Adolescent Family And Peer Relationships To The Quality Of Young Adult Romantic Relationships: The Mediating Role Of Conflict Tactics, Lisa J. Crockett, Brandy A. Randall

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This study examined the associations between the quality of adolescents’ peer and family relationships and the quality of their young adult romantic relationships. Adolescents (N = 253) completed self-report measures of their family and peer relationships in grades 10–12; 7 years later, they reported on connectedness, discord, and the conflict tactics used by both partners in their current romantic relationships. Family relationship quality in adolescence predicted the levels of connectedness, discord, and specific conflict behaviors youth reported in their adult romantic relationships. The use of discussion to resolve conflict mediated the association between adolescent family relationships and the level of …

Prediction Of Intrauterine Pressure From Electrohysterography Using Optimal Linear Filtering, Mark D. Skowronski, John G. Harris, Dorothee E. Marossero, Rodney K. Edwards, Tammy Yachabach Euliano Oct 2006

Prediction Of Intrauterine Pressure From Electrohysterography Using Optimal Linear Filtering, Mark D. Skowronski, John G. Harris, Dorothee E. Marossero, Rodney K. Edwards, Tammy Yachabach Euliano

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We propose a method of predicting intrauterine pressure (IUP) from external electrohysterograms (EHG) using a causal FIR Wiener filter. IUP and 8-channel EHG data were collected simultaneously from 14 laboring patients at term, and prediction models were trained and tested using 10-min windows for each patient and channel. RMS prediction error varied between 5-14 mmHg across all patients. We performed a 4-way analysis of variance on the RMS error, which varied across patients, channels, time (test window) and model (train window). The patient-channel interaction was the most significant factor while channel alone was not significant, indicating that different channels produced …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Panulirus argus Virus 1 (PaV1) is the first virus known to be pathogenic to a wild lobster. It infects the Caribbean spiny lobster P. argus from the Florida Keys, and has a predilection for juveniles. The monitoring of the virus in wild populations and study of its behavior in the laboratory require the development of reliable diagnostic tools. A sensitive and specific fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) assay was developed for detection of PaV1. The lower detection limit using a 110 bp DNA probe in a dot-blot hybridization for PaV1 DNA was 10 pg of cloned template PaV1 DNA and …
