Energy-Efficient Target Coverage In Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks, Wael Awada
Energy-Efficient Target Coverage In Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks, Wael Awada
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
We consider a heterogeneous wireless sensor network, which has several supernodes for data relay and a large number of energy-constrained sensor nodes that are deployed randomly to cover certain targets. Since targets are covered by many sensors, we create several cover sets that are active successively to save power. We introduce the Heterogeneous Connected Set Covers (HCSC) which aims to find at least one cover set that covers all the targets and is connected to a data-relaying supernode. A sensor node can participate in different set covers but the sum of energy spent in all sets is constrained by the …
Evaluation Of Cardiac Function In Ctni(R192h) Transgenic Mice And Ctni Knockout Mice With High-Resolution Ultrasound Imaging And Doppler Echocardiography, Jing Liu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Troponin I is a contractile protein and plays an important role in cardiac function. We have generated cTnl knockout and cTnI(R192H) transgenic mouse models. All of cTnl knockout homozygous mice die at 17-18 days after birth. Some of cTnI(R192H) transgenic mice die at early life stages, some mice develop heart failure at late stages. High-resolution ultrasound imaging and Doppler echocardiography have been used to evaluate cardiac function on cTnl deficient mice and cTnl(R192H) transgenic mice. cTnI mice have damaged relaxation with gradually decreased E/A ratio(E/A<1). FS and cardiac output dramatically decrease on 17-day-o1d cTnI mice indicating severe cardiac dysfunction. We find that the damaged heart function is correspondent with the Tnl expression level decline. 6-8 weeks transgenic mice have shown that the dimension of left and right atria increase. In 15-month-old transgenic mice, the E/A ratio shows a pseudonormal pattern indicating a diastolic dysfunction. This study demonstrate that damaged heart function is tightly associated with Tnl levels in the heart.
Exposure To Reading And Motivation To Read As Mediators Of The Relationship Between Socioeconomic Status And Reading Comprehension Skills In Adolescents: A Multi-National Investigation, Kevin J. Vagi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This study examined the hypothesis that both exposure to reading materials in the home and intrinsic motivation to read mediate the relationship between socioeconomic status and reading comprehension skills in adolescents. Data were derived from the Program for International Student Assessment 2000 dataset (PISA 2000). Six countries out of forty-three were chosen on the basis of country-level SES: two from the bottom 25th percentile (Thailand, Mexico), two at the 50th percentile (Austria, France), and two at the 75th percentile (Norway, United States). Data analysis was conducted on a total of 27,351 participants and 823 schools. Hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) analyses …
From Wise Woman To Mutilated Hag: Witchcraft Violence In Ghana, Laura A. Truxler
From Wise Woman To Mutilated Hag: Witchcraft Violence In Ghana, Laura A. Truxler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Gender based witchcraft violence in Ghana is one of the ways in which violence against women manifests itself in the society. Historical analysis of witchcraft in Africa is widely addressed in the literature, however, there is a comparative neglect of the gender dimensions of witchcraft violence and consequences for such women in terms of human rights violations. Within the northern agriculture regions of Ghana, the legitimacy of female land inheritance, in addition to government pressure to seek out western medical care instead of low-cost traditional herbalists, are threatening power structures and sparking witchcraft violence. Locating witchcraft violence in Ghana within …
Foucault's Techniques Of Power In Street-Level Organizations, Kathleen A. Mcginn
Foucault's Techniques Of Power In Street-Level Organizations, Kathleen A. Mcginn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This study uses Foucault's (1979, 1983, 1995) theoretical work as a guide in examining relation of power and resistance within the unique context of street-level bureaucracies (Lipsky, 1980). It explores relationships by asking how employees and managers are objectified within street level organizations, if there are any similarities in objectifications across organizations providing different government services, and how these objectifications intersect within relations of power and resistance. As an artifact of the relations of power between street-level bureaucrats and managers, ten purposively selected collectively bargained contract documents from public organizations in Florida are analyzed in this research. Ethnographic Content Analysis …

Gifts From Home: Material Culture And American Immigrant Women In The 20th Century, Victoria L. Thur
Gifts From Home: Material Culture And American Immigrant Women In The 20th Century, Victoria L. Thur
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This thesis will explore material culture by focusing on textiles and needlework of American immigrant women in the twentieth-century. It will feature three textiles: the Fishman bris dress from Britain, traditional Ukrainian embroidery, and refugee Hmong story cloths. Material culture is an interdisciplinary field that incorporates a wide variety of sources, theories, and interpretations. Social history incorporates voices and sources that have been disregarded in the mainstream narrative. Without scholarship in material culture, these sources would be lost forever. Textiles and their study allow for a wider and more inclusive interpretation of the American experience as immigrant and female. Most …
Hawthorne's Play On Gender And Sexuality In "The Blithedale Romance", Brooke J. Rubin
Hawthorne's Play On Gender And Sexuality In "The Blithedale Romance", Brooke J. Rubin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Feminist critics have primarily concentrated on the character of Zenobia, Nathaniel Hawthorne's premier feminist in The Blithedale Romance, to unravel Hawthorne's stance on the emergent sexual politics of the time. This thesis not only examines the importance of Zenobia but also analyzes the significance of Hawthorne's allusions to gender and sexuality constructs in terms of his other characters: Coverdale, Hollingsworth, Priscilla, Westervelt, and Moodie. In addition, I argue that Hawthorne's purpose is to experiment with societal constructs of gender and sexuality among his central characters, a literary experiment that inadvertently subverts his ostensible traditional, patriarchal perspective. In essence, my reading …
Impact Of Reading Instructional Methodology On Student Achievement Of Black Males Based On The Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, Deedara. Hicks
Impact Of Reading Instructional Methodology On Student Achievement Of Black Males Based On The Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, Deedara. Hicks
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
For the past 20 years the gap in reading achievement has widened between Black and White students across the United States. The No Child Left Behind Act and the Florida A+ Plan require that all students meet proficiency on state-mandated assessments. As individual schools struggle to meet these guidelines, no student can be left behind. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of two different reading instructional methodologies on the 2004 fourth-grade FCAT norm-referenced test (NRT) for Black males. The reading instructional methodologies examined in this study, Harcourt Basal Series and SRA Direct Instruction Program, have been …

Implementation Of The Sensor-Mac Protocol For The Jist/Swans Simulator, Veerendra. Tippanagoudar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
In recent years, advances in wireless technologies have enabled novel applications for wireless devices. Sensor network is one such application that consists of large number of battery-operated nodes. To simulate such networks with large number of nodes, a wireless sensor network simulator that is highly scalable is vital. JiST/SWANS is one such simulator that is highly scalable. However, the JiST/SWANS MAC layer implementation of 802.11b is not suitable for sensor networks, which are energy-constrained. Hence, our main focus is to implement the S-MAC protocol in JiST/SWANS. The S-MAC protocol allows the nodes to go to sleep and thereby it helps …

Intimate Partner Homicide Methods In Heterosexual And Homosexual Relationships, Krystal D. Mize
Intimate Partner Homicide Methods In Heterosexual And Homosexual Relationships, Krystal D. Mize
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
From 1976 to 2001 over 50,000 people in the United States were victims of documented intimate partner lethal violence. In a study of intimate partner homicides in Chicago, Block and Christakos (1995) found that the weapon used varied based on the offender's gender. Relative to heterosexual partners, homosexual partners experience added stress due to a lack of social support of their relationships. The current study examined the effect of sex and sexual orientation of intimate partner homicide offenders on brutality of killing methods. Two hypotheses were formulated addressing the brutality of the murders as a function of the offender's sexual …
Markers Of Hypoxic Stress In Fishes Of The Kissimmee River, Lynda J. Dirk
Markers Of Hypoxic Stress In Fishes Of The Kissimmee River, Lynda J. Dirk
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The channelized Kissimmee River experiences seasonally low dissolved oxygen levels which have changed the ecosystem to favor air-breathing species, while gamefish populations have declined greatly. In 2001 , the central portion of the river (Pool C) was physically restored. To evaluate the usefulness of various stress markers and assess the success of the partial restoration, the stress responses were analyzed (brain monoamines, heat shock proteins, and plasma cortisol) of air-breathing fish (bowfin, Florida gar), versus gamefish (largemouth bass and bluegill sunfish). Fish were collected from hypoxic and normoxic water at three sites in the Kissimmee River. Statistical analysis (MANOV A) …

Widespread use of the illicit drug ecstasy (MDMA or 3,4- Methylenedioxymethamphetarnine) and the possible neurological damage caused by its abuse is disconcerting. This study examined possible cognitive impairments in ecstasy users while controlling for polydrug use. The CANT AB neuropsychological tests was used to test working memory capacity, immediate and delayed perceptual matching, shifting of attention, episodic memory, and learning in current and previous ecstasy users compared to non-ecstasy polydrug users. The prediction that current and heavy previous ecstasy users would perform worse on the neuropsychological tests, when compared to polydrug control group, denoting neurological damage was not confirmed. The …
Men's Partner-Directed Insults And Sexual Coercion In Intimate Relationships, Valerie G. Starratt
Men's Partner-Directed Insults And Sexual Coercion In Intimate Relationships, Valerie G. Starratt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Given the negative psychological and health-related consequences of sexual coercion, recent research has focused on predicting sexual coercion. In two studies, I investigated the relationships between men's partner-directed sexually coercive behaviors and their use of partner-directed insults in the context of intimate relationships. Study 1 secured self-reports from 247 men on the Partner-Directed Insults Scale and the Sexual Coercion in Intimate Relationships Scale. Study 2 secured partner-reports from 378 women on the same measures. Across both studies, the results indicate that men's use of sexually coercive behaviors can be predicted by the frequency or content of the insults that men …
Morbid Jealousy From An Evolutionary Psychological Perspective, Judith A. Easton
Morbid Jealousy From An Evolutionary Psychological Perspective, Judith A. Easton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Individuals diagnosed with morbid jealousy have hypersensitive jealousy mechanisms that cause them to have irrational thoughts about their partners and to exhibit extreme behaviors. Because morbid jealousy is defined as a malfunction of evolved jealousy mechanisms such that they produce increased chances of perceiving partner infidelity, research guided by an evolutionary psychological perspective can add insight to the understanding of the disorder. The present research tested eleven evolutionarily relevant hypotheses about jealousy, in an attempt to improve the understanding of the etiology of morbid jealousy. To investigate a large enough sample, I created a database of all the morbid jealousy …

Music, Rhetoric And The Creation Of Feminist Consciousness In The Marian Songs Of Hildegard Of Bingen (1098--1179), Beverly R. Lomer
Music, Rhetoric And The Creation Of Feminist Consciousness In The Marian Songs Of Hildegard Of Bingen (1098--1179), Beverly R. Lomer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This dissertation examines the sixteen songs to Mary in the Symphonia armonie celestium revelationum of twelfth century nun composer, Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179). The analysis demonstrates that the idiosyncratic musical style of the Symphonia cycle represents an innovative application of the rhetorical procedures of the medieval ars praedicandi and the ars dictamen to music centuries in advance of an articulated concept of musical rhetoric, and that one goal of the Marian repertory was to affect the self-consciousness of the all-female audience in a positive direction. The effect is achieved through the strategically constructed and inextricable relationship between text and melody. …
Origin And Mechanism Of Terpene Biosynthesis In Pseudopterogorgia Spp, Jennifer M. Boehnlein
Origin And Mechanism Of Terpene Biosynthesis In Pseudopterogorgia Spp, Jennifer M. Boehnlein
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The goal of this work was to investigate the biosynthetic origins of diterpene natural products (pseudopterosins, kallolides, bipinnatins, and cembrenes) from corals of the genus Pseudopterogorgia as well as the biosynthetic pathways by which they are produced. These studies have shown that the pseudopterosins from Pseudopterogorgia elisabethae are biosynthesized within the algal symbiont (or possibly a bacterium or fungus associated with the symbiont), are not inducible by manipulation of light levels, and do not change as a result of transplantation to new locations. Studies on Pseudopterogorgia bipinnata revealed that only one chemotype is capable of biosynthesizing the kallolide family of …

Putin Administration's Policies And Russian Initiatives To Rebuild A Eurasian Empire, Julie M. Mura
Putin Administration's Policies And Russian Initiatives To Rebuild A Eurasian Empire, Julie M. Mura
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
As the current President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, nears the end of his reign, the shift in his foreign policy has become clear as well as the direction on which he has set the nation for his predecessors to continue. The shift in policy has come from above as represented by the Russian elite and central government, as well as a noticeable ideological shift from below by the Russian citizens, both of which focus on the anti-West rhetoric known as Eurasianism. The school of thought known as Eurasianism seeks Russia to reestablish itself as a Eurasian empire. The contention of …

Prgmdh Algorithm For Neural Network Development And Its Applications, Chetan. Tangadpelli
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The existing Group Method of Data Handling (GMDH) algorithm has characteristics that are ideal for neural network design. This thesis introduces a new algorithm that applies some of the best characteristics of GMDH to neural network design and develops a Pruning based Regenerated Network by discarding the neurons in a layer which don't contribute for the creation of neurons in next layer. Unlike other conventional algorithms, which generate a network which is a black box, the new algorithm provides visualization of the network displaying all the neurons in the network. The algorithm is general enough that it will accept any …
Range Assignment Problem And Security In Wireless Networks, Mohammad O. Pervaiz
Range Assignment Problem And Security In Wireless Networks, Mohammad O. Pervaiz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This thesis considers two important issues in wireless networks. In first part, we address Energy-Efficient Range Assignment in Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks (HRA) and in second part, we present a survey on security attacks in ad hoc wireless networks. We address the HRA problem by selecting the transmission range for each energy-constraint sensor node such that a multi-hop communication path exists between each sensor' node and a resource-rich supernode while maximum power required is minimized. This is the first work to address this problem. We propose several solutions: an Integer Programming approach, a distributed greedy protocol, and a minimum spanning …
Response Of Tropical Marine Macroalgae To Thermal Stress, Brent C. Anderson
Response Of Tropical Marine Macroalgae To Thermal Stress, Brent C. Anderson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Short-term increases in temperatures above 31°C have been shown to influence the structure and diversity of coral reefs through coral bleaching episodes, but quantitative information on how these thermal events affect macroalgae on coral reef communities has rarely been described. Using laboratory mesocosm experiments, I examined six species of commonly occurring macroalgae from two functional form groups on the Florida Keys reef tract to determine their temperature thresholds, quantified by the point at which photosynthesis, quantum yield (Fv/Fm), and mortality rates were significantly affected. Red crustose coralline sp., classified in the calcareous group, showed no significant changes in Fv/Fm, and …

Readability Analysis Of Elementary-Level Science Textbooks, Robyn Trainer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Given both the unprecedented attention to the importance of providing children with the best possible science textbooks and the overwhelming evidence that students in the United States are severely lacking the most basic science knowledge, the decline in the number of students pursuing science degrees is alarming. In spite of all the efforts being made, a disparity still exists between (1) the wealth of science information available, (2) the apparent ease of access to scientific information, and (3) the lack of scientific academic progress being made in classrooms across the United States. A literature review was conducted which included the …

Popping Patented Pills: Europe And A Decade's Dose Of Trips, David Vaver, Shamnad Basheer
All Papers
This paper considers some features of Europe's approach to medicine, public health and patents as it has developed during the decade since TRIPs came into force. It then reviews what rights users have in relation to such patents and what duties right holders may owe users. The following issues are discussed: 1. How patents on medicines are viewed in Europe, 2. How TRIPs has affected European law, 3. How bilateral agreements since TRIPs have affected Europe, 4. How user rights should be viewed under TRIPs, 5. Whether patents in the public health field are a special case.

Introduction: Religion, Division, And The Constitution, Richard W. Garnett
Introduction: Religion, Division, And The Constitution, Richard W. Garnett
Journal Articles
Thirty-five years ago, in his landmark Lemon v. Kurtzman opinion, Chief Justice Warren Burger declared that state actions could "excessive[ly]"—and, therefore, unconstitutionally—"entangle" government and religion, not only by requiring or allowing intrusive monitoring by officials of religious institutions and activities, but also through their "divisive political potential." He worried that government actions burdened with this "potential" pose a "threat to the normal political process and "divert attention from the myriad issues and problems that confront every level of government." And, he insisted that "political division along religious lines was one of the principal evils against which the First Amendment was …
Prophecy And Casuistry: Abortion, Torture And Moral Discourse, M. Cathleen Kaveny
Prophecy And Casuistry: Abortion, Torture And Moral Discourse, M. Cathleen Kaveny
Journal Articles
In turn of the 21st century United States there are serious moral disputes over issues such as abortion and torture among persons who see themselves as belonging to the same moral tradition. These disputes have not given rise to fruitful discussion about differences, but instead led to a breakdown of conversation and even of community. A part of these clashes and breakdowns are not the result of mutually inconsistent moral premises, but are driven by tensions between two styles of moral discourse, the prophetic and casuistical. The former invokes the absolute and fiery rhetorical style of biblical prophets while the …
