African American And European American Therapists’ Experiences Of Addressing Race In Cross-Racial Psychotherapy Dyads, Sarah Knox, Alan W. Burkard, Adanna Jinaki Johnson, Lisa A. Suzuki, Joseph G. Ponterotto

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Using Consensual Qualitative Research, 12 licensed psychologists’ overall experiences addressing race in psychotherapy were investigated, as were their experiences addressing race in a specific cross-racial therapy dyad. Results indicated that only African American psychologists reported routinely addressing race with clients of color or when race was part of a client’s presenting concern. European American psychologists indicated that they would address race if clients raised the topic, and some reported that they did not normally address race with racially different clients. When discussing a specific cross-racial dyad, African American therapists more often than European American therapists addressed race because they perceived …

The Adverse Impact Of Remote Command And Control Under Live Fire, Kip Smith Oct 2003

The Adverse Impact Of Remote Command And Control Under Live Fire, Kip Smith

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

The US Army is planning a shift in the mode of command and control between soldiers and their battlefield leaders. Soldiers will receive orders from afar through electronic means of communication. This practice is known as remote command and control. Reliance on remote command and control has the potential to erode trust between soldiers and their leaders and should, we hypothesize, slow soldiers' response times to commands to move and to shoot. We have conducted two field experiments to test this hypothesis (Pangburn, Freund, Pangburn, & Smith, 2003). Our laboratory was a paintball assault lane. While a paintball lane is …

American Warfare In The Twenty-First Century, Paul R. Camacho Sep 2003

American Warfare In The Twenty-First Century, Paul R. Camacho

New England Journal of Public Policy

Over the last several years there have been a number of calls for the development of a new theoretical doctrine to govern the force structure of the United States military. The last big change in doctrine occurred in the post-Vietnam era. It involved not simply the change to the all-volunteer force, but an abandonment of escalation brinkmanship and open-ended missions. The subsequent Powell Doctrine demanded the use of overwhelming force and clear objectives and boundaries for military intervention. As the new millennium approached, the deficiencies of the Powell Doctrine became apparent — the multilateral approach of coalition building and the …

Shaping Public Programs Through Medicare, Medicaid, And Schip Waivers: The Fundamentals, Cynthia Shirk

National Health Policy Forum

This background paper examines the use of research, demonstration, and program waiver authorities to test new approaches to the delivery of and payment for health care services in federally financed health coverage programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program. The paper also looks at the mechanics of waivers as well as their history and political context in shaping public programs. In addition, it explores the ways the changing state-federal relationship and the ever-growing demand for state flexibility have driven waiver policy.

Caveat Relocator: A Practical Relocation Proposal To Save Space And Promote Electronic Resources, David C. Tyler, Brian L. Pytlik Zillig

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Despite ever-increasing electronic information, space on library shelves continues to be a problem. This article discusses one library's efforts to find space on overcrowded library shelves by moving selected resources to off-swite storage and at the same time promoting use of electronic resources, namely the electronic journals that make up the JSTOR database. Issues explored include in-house use of bound periodicals, circulation statistics, interlibrary loan requests, and computer printing vs. photocopying for print titles available through JSTOR.

Managers' Occupational Stress In China : The Role Of Self-Efficacy, Changqin Lu, Oi Ling Siu, Cary L. Cooper Sep 2003

Managers' Occupational Stress In China : The Role Of Self-Efficacy, Changqin Lu, Oi Ling Siu, Cary L. Cooper

Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series

The role of self-efficacy, an individual difference variable, in occupational stress research is seldom discussed, and is even rarely examined in Chinese societies. This study investigates the relationships between stressors, managerial self-efficacy (MSE) and work-related strains (job satisfaction, physical strain, and psychological strain). A total of 450 enterprise managers in eight cities of the People's Republic of China completed a battery of structured questionnaires. The results of the study generally support that total stressors was negatively related to job satisfaction, physical strain, and psychological strain. Furthermore, MSE was statistically significantly related to strains in that respondents with high levels of …

Technology, Transformation, And New Operational Concepts, Elihu Zimet, Robert E. Armstrong, Donald C. Daniel, Joseph N. Mait Sep 2003

Technology, Transformation, And New Operational Concepts, Elihu Zimet, Robert E. Armstrong, Donald C. Daniel, Joseph N. Mait

Defense Horizons

Throughout history, technology has been central to warfare, often giving qualitative advantages to numerically inferior forces. Typically, the rate of technology development has been relatively slow and the introduction of new weapons systems even slower, which has allowed evolutionary development of operational concepts. Today’s accelerated pace of technology development no longer allows sequential development of operational concepts. In addition, the current global political environment has placed demands upon the military that range from engaging in major regional conflicts to stabilization, reconstruction and peacekeeping, all creating a continuous need for flexible, adaptive systems and new concepts of operation.

The first purpose …

Strategic Leadership Competencies, Leonard Wong Dr., Stephen J. Gerras Dr., William Kidd Col, Robert Pricone Col

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The strategic leadership literature in both the academic and military contexts is replete with long lists of the knowledge, skills, and abilities. Unfortunately, long comprehensive lists are problematic. Looking across the literature on strategic leadership, current Army strategic leader competencies, and the future environment, six meta-competencies can be derived: identity, mental agility, cross-cultural savvy, interpersonal maturity, world-class warrior, and professional astuteness.

Saving City Lifelines: Lessons Learned In The 9-11 Terrorist Attacks, Mti Report 02-06, Brian M. Jenkins

Mineta Transportation Institute

This case study of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks examines how the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, New York City Transit, Port Authority, and other transit systems responded to the events of 9-11, and how the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) worked to coordinate response and recovery operations; it also seeks to identify those lessons that can be captured before participants rotate or retire, memories dim, and what was learned is lost. The scope is limited to the evaluation of transit response, not other surface transportation elements such as bridges and tunnels, which seemed to function quite well and could be …

The Legitimacy Of Experiential Learning In Research Universities, Angela E. Schmiede Aug 2003

The Legitimacy Of Experiential Learning In Research Universities, Angela E. Schmiede

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

The goal of this historical and exploratory study was to describe and analyze the spread and legitimacy of experiential learning to and within Cornell University and Stanford University. Using an institutional and political framework, this analysis focused on understanding how elements of legitimacy from the academy, the experiential learning field and the external environment intersected to shape the diffusion, forms and purposes of experiential learning within Cornell and Stanford. The constructions of legitimacy within these three different contexts shifted over time, influencing the extent to which experiential learning was adopted; and once adopted, the extent to which it was adapted, …
