Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

In an exploratory study of the role of salary level and other factors in motivating undergraduate math, science, and technology majors to consider a career as a K-12 teacher, the salary level students said would motivate them to consider a career in teaching was related to the salary expected in their chosen non-teaching occupation, but not to three of the Big 5 personality dimensions of extroversion, agreeableness, and openness, nor concern for others or career risk aversion. ...

The Rebirth Of Bioethics: Extending The Original Formulations Of Van Rensselaer Potter, Peter J. Whitehouse Dec 2003

The Rebirth Of Bioethics: Extending The Original Formulations Of Van Rensselaer Potter, Peter J. Whitehouse

Faculty Scholarship

Van Rensselaer Potter's original concept of bioethics as a global integration of biology and values was designed to guide human survival. His attention to the creation of human knowledge and the incorporation of ecological concepts and values into medicine and health remain important, yet largely neglected, contributions deserving of further elaboration. Bioethicists should heed his warning about unsustainable progress, particularly in health care systems, and work toward changing their behaviors. Incorporating life-affirming spiritual values and extending Potter's global bioethics to a deeper bioethics seem essential.

Organizational Factors Contributing To Worker Frustration: The Precursor To Burnout, Cathleen A. Lewandowski Dec 2003

Organizational Factors Contributing To Worker Frustration: The Precursor To Burnout, Cathleen A. Lewandowski

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This study examined the organizationalf actors that contribute to workers' frustration with their work situation. The sample included 141 service professionals who attended workshops on burnout in 2001. The purpose of the workshops was to increase awareness regarding the organizational factors that could contribute to burnout. Findings indicate that factors most directly affecting clients were predictive of frustration, rather than factors that may indirectly support service quality or factors impacting workers' professional autonomy. A sense of powerlessness and isolation was also predictive of frustration, suggesting that participants viewed workplace problems as a private rather than an organizational concern. To address …

Principals and senior staff are involved in an ongoing performance management plan that is linked to the schools’ annual curriculum goals and targets. …

Toward An Integrated Communication Theory For Celebrity Endorsement In Fund Raising, Tracie M. Domino

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Throughout the history of the United States, Americans customarily have given away their money, as well as their time to serve the common good. Americans will give "to build something, to fight something, or to save something" (Fink, 1990, p. 136). They make gifts to causes, or the societal problems represented by organizational missions, that are important to them. Individuals give not only to advance a common good, but also to receive private goods, or benefits that are internal, intangible, and in some cases, tangible (Steinberg, 1989).

To create this feeling of reciprocity for prospective donors who have not actually …

Systems Of Practice: How Leaders Use Artifacts To Create Professional Community In Schools, Richard R. Halverson Oct 2003

Systems Of Practice: How Leaders Use Artifacts To Create Professional Community In Schools, Richard R. Halverson

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

This article explores how local school leaders construct the conditions for professional community in their schools. This paper argues that professional community is a special form of social capital that results, in part, from the design and implementation of facilitating structural networks by instructional leaders in schools. The structural aspects of a school community can be conceived as a system of practice, that is, a network of structures, tasks and traditions that create and facilitate complex webs of practice in organizations.

Business Faculty Opinions Of Teaching Methods And Resources, Gundars Kaupins, Malcolm Coco Oct 2003

Business Faculty Opinions Of Teaching Methods And Resources, Gundars Kaupins, Malcolm Coco

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

About two hundred and eighty business professors compared seventeen teaching methods and resources based on four objectives. Interactive, hands-on teaching methods such as internships were rated first and less interactive teaching resources such as radio were rated last. Web courses that included more interaction such as chats were rated higher than Web courses with audio, typed lectures, and videos. However, all four types of Web courses investigated were rated in the bottom half of the teaching methods and resources. Results correspond to major principles of andragogy theory.

Teaching The Potential Impacts Of Technology Growth On Required Rates Of Return, John D. Groesbeck Oct 2003

Teaching The Potential Impacts Of Technology Growth On Required Rates Of Return, John D. Groesbeck

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

As professors of economics and finance, we often teach that technology enhances profits, which is well and good, and probably true from a macroeconomic point of view. However, recent market experiences with respect to the technology sector show that the process of technological innovation is often messy, and subject to devastatingly high levels of risk at the firm level. It is the intent of this paper to provide financial educators with some tools to incorporate the assessment, and pricing of technology risk in the undergraduate and graduate curriculum.

To some extent, the future search conference design also uses practice fields and action learning.

Evaluation Of Capacity-Building Programs: A Learning Organization Approach, John Gruidl, Ronald Hustedde Oct 2003

Evaluation Of Capacity-Building Programs: A Learning Organization Approach, John Gruidl, Ronald Hustedde

Journal of Extension

Major Extension programming, whether in community development, nutrition, youth development, small business, or other areas, strengthens organizations by enhancing the capacity of members to work together effectively. Yet evaluating these impacts is difficult and rarely done in practice. In this article, we apply ideas from the Learning Organization model to the evaluation of capacity-building programs. We identify questions that Extension educators can ask in evaluating the impact of their programming on an organization. In our view, a Learning Organization approach to evaluation holds promise in providing Extension educators with tools to demonstrate the value of their interventions with organizations.

A Tool For Developing Questionnaire Content, Kathlene Larson, Vern Ryan Oct 2003

A Tool For Developing Questionnaire Content, Kathlene Larson, Vern Ryan

Journal of Extension

CD-DIAL, a community survey unit at Iowa State University Extension, has developed a process for generating the content of data collection instruments such as surveys and focus groups. This participative process uses three statements and the knowledge of community or organization members to identify significant issues and collect useable data for program development, long range planning, and evaluation. The goal, the setting, a description of the three statements, and examples of typical outcomes are described.
