Detection Of Gaps In The Spatial Coverage Of Coral Reef Monitoring Projects In The Us Caribbean And Gulf Of Mexico, Rebecca G. Asch, D. D. Turgeon
Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications
As part of the US Coral Reef Task Force's National Program to Map, Assess, Inventory, and Monitor US Coral Reef Ecosystems, a comprehensive survey of projects/programs monitoring coral reef ecosystems and related habitats (i.e., seagrass beds and mangroves) in the US Caribbean and Pacific was undertaken. Information was gathered on a total of 296 monitoring and assessment projects conducted since 1990 in the US Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. Substantial gaps in monitoring coverage of US coral reef ecosystems were revealed through geographic information system (GIS) analysis of survey metadata. Although southern Florida contains approximately two-thirds of all marine …

Genetic And Molecular Factors In The Aetio-Pathogenesis Of Pancreatitis In Humans, Mark Timothy Cartmell
Other Faculty of Health Theses
Both acute (AP) and chronic (CP) pancreatitis are complex diseases, with a number of aetiologies and complex pathogeneses. A number of contributing factors are assessed here. Genetic studies were performed looking at a high activity polymorphism of the alcohol metabolising enzyme cytochrome P450 2E l. Assessing a role in alcohol abuse and end organ disease; alcohol abusers (n= 239) and controls (n= 208) were studied. A significantly lower number of alcohol consumers (2.1 %) had the polymorphism than controls (5.8%); p= 0.049, Fisher's exact test. Any association with end organ disease could not be further elucidated due to the rarity …

Background: Allogeneic transfusion confers a risk to the recipient and the recent introduction of leucocyte depleted blood has increased cost pressure on health resources. Colorectal surgery is a high blood usage field with 43% of all patients in our unit being transfused, over a three year period. Patient perceptions: Despite the risks associated with transfusion, a majority of patients are willing to have an allogeneic transfusion (85%) and think it is safe (89%), which may have implications in the uptake of alternatives available. The effect of bowel preparation Picolax bowel preparation causes significant dehydrating effects which may impair acute normovolaemic …

Benefits Of Fermented Liquid Diets For Sows And Their Piglets, Vlasta Demeckova
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
A programme of study was undertaken to asses the antimicrobial and potential immunological properties of fermented liquid feed fed to sows in late gestation period. A liquid feed fermented with Lactobacillus plantarum fed to the pregnant sow in late gestation had the potential to beneficially modify the microflora the lactating sows introduces into the environment, which was consequently reflected in beneficial changes in the gut microflora of their litters. In addition, colostrum from sows fed FLF had a significantly greater mitogenic activity on both intestinal ce11s (79326 ± 3069 CPM) and blood lymphocytes (1903 ± 204 CPM) compared with colostrum …

Antenatal Education In The Transition To Motherhood, Suzanne Elizabeth Burley
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This thesis explores the relationship between antenatal education and the transition to motherhood, focusing on the pre-natal expectations and postnatal experiences of a small sample of first-time mothers in Plymouth. The aims of the study were 1) to investigate the style and content of statutory and voluntary sector antenatal classes in the Plymouth area. 2) To investigate factors affecting non-attendance, including non-attenders' perceptions of them. 3) To examine the role of lay systems of knowledge and support in the transition to motherhood and 4) to investigate the differential impact of different patterns of knowledge and support on the experiences of …
Philosophies Of Colour: Gender And Acculturation, Helen V Andrew
Philosophies Of Colour: Gender And Acculturation, Helen V Andrew
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
My hypothesis is that 'Colour' as idea acts as a dynamic in the production of meaning and as such is part of what Le Doeuff (1991: 46-49) argues are deeply held epistemes that structure and govern our ways of thinking. I have dealt with the difficulties attendant on the analysis of a phenomenon as insubstantial as colour (as idea and as precept) by assuming Goethe's (1810: 305-323) concept of the enrobement of colour to objects without also attaching Goethe's theoretical hypothesis of moral associations to colour. Thus I combine four different methodologies to broadly related areas and cloak each in …

Children And Family Values : A Critical Appraisal Of 'Family' In Schools, Rowena Alexandra Passy
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
Prompted by the Labour government's proposal to introduce education on family relationships into the National Curriculum, this research project was set up to investigate how teachers portrayed 'family' within the classroom and the reactions that children had to the images that were presented. The intention was to highlight any problems that might arise from including 'family' into the formal curriculum. The fieldwork was conducted in three primary and three secondary schools. Two of each of the schools were located in the West Country and the remaining two, in order to give some ethnic and cultural balance to the project, were …

'The Cost Of Banking On Eastern Promises' An Ethnographic Study Of The Impact Of Changing Bank Strategies On Employees, Susan Jane Child
'The Cost Of Banking On Eastern Promises' An Ethnographic Study Of The Impact Of Changing Bank Strategies On Employees, Susan Jane Child
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
Banking is a major employment sector, which has experienced phenomenal growth over the last decade. Following the de-regulation of the financial marketplace and the entry of ‘new players', the industry has suffered from an almost ruinous internal struggle between its traditional, gentlemanly ethos (Clarke and Vincent, 1989) and the enforced adoption of aggressive sales and marketing strategies (Knights and Tinker, 1997). My research has investigated the various ways that ‘change’ (particularly strategic change consequential to the piecemeal adoption of ‘Japanese-style' systems of working and management -'HRM, TQM and lean production) have been met, experienced, negotiated, and to some extent contested, …
The Effect Of The Supreme Court's Eleventh Amendment Jurisprudence On Environmental Citizen Suits: Gotcha!, Hope M. Babcock
The Effect Of The Supreme Court's Eleventh Amendment Jurisprudence On Environmental Citizen Suits: Gotcha!, Hope M. Babcock
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
The current Supreme Court has substantially expanded the scope of protection from lawsuits accorded to states by the Eleventh Amendment and narrowed the exceptions to its application. As a result, many people are finding they are unable to vindicate federal rights in any court when the defendant is a state or a state agency. The most recent example of this is the Court's decision in South Carolina State Ports Authority v. Federal Maritime Commission, in which the Court extended the reach of the Eleventh Amendment to private administrative enforcement actions against states, thus forsaking completely any connection to the …

Drm And Privacy, Julie E. Cohen
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Interrogating the relationship between copyright enforcement and privacy raises deeper questions about the nature of privacy and what counts, or ought to count, as privacy invasion in the age of networked digital technologies. This Article begins, in Part II, by identifying the privacy interests that individuals enjoy in their intellectual activities and exploring the different ways in which certain implementations of DRM technologies may threaten those interests. Part III considers the appropriate scope of legal protection for privacy in the context of DRM, and argues that both the common law of privacy and an expanded conception of consumer protection law …

Understanding Grief And Loss With Children From Divorced Families, Angela C. Meyer
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this paper is to present information about how grief and loss affect children from divorced families. Divorce can be just as traumatic as the death of a loved one, and the divorce rate continually increases every year. Two models of grief and how they apply to children of divorce are presented, as well as an explanation the process of grief in relation to divorce. Finally, this researcher identifies prevention and intervention techniques that schools and the whole community can use to aid children through the grief process of divorce.
Antipyretic, Parasitologic, And Immunologic Effects Of Combining Sulfadoxine/Pyrimethamine With Chloroquine Or Paracetamol For Treating Uncomplicated Plasmodium Falciparum Malaria, E. Hugosson, D. Tarimo, M. Troye-Blomberg, S.M. Montgomery, Zul Premji, A. Bjorkman
Antipyretic, Parasitologic, And Immunologic Effects Of Combining Sulfadoxine/Pyrimethamine With Chloroquine Or Paracetamol For Treating Uncomplicated Plasmodium Falciparum Malaria, E. Hugosson, D. Tarimo, M. Troye-Blomberg, S.M. Montgomery, Zul Premji, A. Bjorkman
Pathology, East Africa
Sulfadoxine/pyrimethamine (SP) is increasingly used against malaria in sub-Saharan Africa because of chloroquine resistance. However, chloroquine may have a beneficial antipyretic effect. We therefore compared the combination of SP plus chloroquine, chloroquine alone, SP alone, and SP plus paracetamol in the treatment of uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria in 175 Tanzanian children (1-4 years old) in a randomized trial. Outcome variables were axillary temperatures every six hours, daily parasitemias, and serum levels of IgG antibodies to P. falciparum. Lower mean temperatures (6-48 hours) were achieved with SP plus chloroquine or paracetamol than with SP alone (P < 0.001) or chloroquine alone (P < 0.05). All three SP-treated groups showed high and similar parasite reduction (0-48 hours), whereas treatment with chloroquine alone was much less effective. Levels of IgG antibodies to P. falciparum increased significantly (P < 0.001) and similarly in the four treatment groups between days 0, 2. and 3. Thus, the addition of chloroquine or paracetamol to SP improved the clinical outcome, but did not affect the parasitologic response or antibody production.

A Healer Or An Executioner: The Proper Role Of A Psychiatrist In A Criminal Justice System, Gregory Dolin
All Faculty Scholarship
This article argues that despite the benefits of ridding the criminal justice system of some uncertainty and ignorance with respect to mental health issues, the very close involvement of psychiatrists in the criminal justice system as practiced in the United States is not only illogical and bad policy, but also unethical from the viewpoint of medical ethics. Part II of this article will lay the groundwork for the argument by discussing the history of the insanity defense, and of science's involvement with criminal justice; while Part III, will look into the association of science and the administration of justice in …

Public Importance: Balancing Proprietary Rights And The Right To Know, Eric Easton

Articulating a coherent, all-encompassing First Amendment doctrine for freedom of speech and of the press has so far eluded every scholar who has tried, not least because of the variety of analytical approaches and potentially dispositive factors in Supreme Court jurisprudence. For example, the same regulation might be enforceable in one medium, but not another; in one forum, but not another. Enforceability may depend on the regulator's purpose and drafting skill, or not, depending in turn on whether the speech deserves full protection, some protection, or no protection at all. Sometimes enforceability depends on the speaker's intent, or knowledge, or …

Transgender Jurisprudence: Dysphoric Bodies Of Law, Jennifer L. Levi

This is a book review of Andrew Sharpe's "Transgender Jurisprudence: Dysphoric Bodies of Law." The Author discusses the contribution Sharpe makes to the transgender rights movement as invaluable for two reasons. First, it provides the first in-depth and full-length comprehensive treatment of the topic of transgender jurisprudence, and emerges as the foundational work by which others will be measured. Second, it exposes the homophobia underlying many of the key decisions, particularly in the area of marriage and family law, and provides an important link between the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender movements which should not be ignored by activists from …

United Nations Convention On The Rights Of The Child: Participation Rights Of The Child And The Role Of Youthwork, Yaw Somua Boateng
Graduate Research Papers
The increasing prominence gained by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child since its adoption in 1989 and its almost universal ratification by members of the United Nations Organization provides the context for this study. The objective of this study is to explore the place of the Convention as it relates to upholding the "best interests" of the child. The principles of provision, protection, and participation, which are the foundations upon which the Convention is formulated, are analyzed. The role of contemporary youthwork premised on "rights-based" approach that emphasizes the active participation of children and young people …
