Interventional Approach To Intermediate-High-Risk Pe: Catheter-Directed Mechanical Thrombectomy, Shreya Agarwal, Kirill Ruban, Ishan Kirti, Karina Ruban, Fadi Saab, Sujata Kambhatla, Pranay Gupta
Conference Presentation Abstracts
Acute pulmonary embolism (PE) is a major cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The clinical outcomes are largely determined by thrombus burden and its hemodynamic impact on the right ventricle (RV). Over the past decade, catheter-directed mechanical thrombectomy has emerged as a promising alternative for systemic thrombolysis for PE management, particularly in patients at high risk for major bleeding. This approach provides rapid mechanical debulking of thrombus without exposure to thrombolytics and has been associated with significant improvements in RV function and pulmonary artery pressures. We present a case of extensive bilateral PE successfully treated with mechanical thrombectomy, highlighting the …

ECG demonstrated atrial flutter with rapid ventricular response. She developed progressive respiratory failure requiring intubation. Repeat ECG …
Adsorption Of Pfas On Bridged Functionalized Organosilica Materials, Elisha Lawerh Kabutey
Adsorption Of Pfas On Bridged Functionalized Organosilica Materials, Elisha Lawerh Kabutey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
PFAS are hazardous contaminants that have a devastating impact on human health and the environment. Their hazardous nature has led to the development of various adsorption methods for removing these contaminants from water sources. In this study, functionalized organosilica materials were synthesized from bis[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl] amine using the sol-gel method. The surface amino groups of the organosilica were converted into amine hydrochloride groups. Their adsorption properties were evaluated using salts of perfluorooctanoic acid, perfluorooctanesulfonic acid, and perfluorobutanesulfonic acid. Results showed excellent adsorption capacity of the materials. Adsorption of PFAS leads to particle agglomeration and flotation of the spent material. A column …

Decomposition In Urban Forest Patches Across A New York-New Jersey Urbanization Gradient, Cailee Sprouse
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
"Urbanization causes habitat fragmentation, pollution, homogenization of soil profiles, and replacement of native flora and fauna, which can alter vital ecological processes like decomposition. It is essential to investigate the impacts urbanization may have on ecosystem functioning to better inform urban land management. Studies have shown conflicting results on the impacts of urbanization on soil decomposition rates, with some showing higher, lower, or similar decomposition rates in urban soils compared to rural soils. This study aims to investigate the effects of urbanization and soil characteristics on decomposition rates in three urban forest patches in New Jersey and New York using …

Does Self-Compassion Buffer Against The Potential Effects Of Perfectionism And Psychopathology On Non-Suicidal Self-Injury?, Natasha Bourgoin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
University students with increased rates of reported perfectionism, anxiety, and depression, are vulnerable to non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). However, not all students with psychological distress engage in NSSI, suggesting protective factors may help to mitigate this risk. The present study examined the relation between perfectionism and NSSI, via the mediating effects of anxiety and depression, and the moderating role of self-compassion. Participants were 338 university students (67% female; 87% White) who completed several self-report measures. Students with greater perfectionism reported higher levels of anxiety and depressive symptoms and, in turn, more NSSI engagement. Self-compassion and several self-compassionate domains attenuated connections between …
The Push-Pull Model's Function In Understanding Public Sector Workers' Inter-Organisational Labour Mobility: The Views Of The Herzberg Two-Factor Theory, Rosemary Selestine Massae
The Push-Pull Model's Function In Understanding Public Sector Workers' Inter-Organisational Labour Mobility: The Views Of The Herzberg Two-Factor Theory, Rosemary Selestine Massae
Business Management Review
In the modern world, one of the challenges managers have in maintaining their talented staff is labour mobility. Inter-organisational labour mobility (ILM) has been found to be significantly influenced by co-worker relationships, work-family conflict, monetary compensation, and training and development. The pull-push paradigm was inspired by human migration. Since migration not only symbolises movement across physical locations but also encompasses other routine duties, theory is essential to comprehending ILM. However, to date, no existing study has tested the model under the influence of Herzberg’s Two-factor Theory, in explaining ILM uses the public sector as a major setting of the question …

The Impact Of Quantum Computing And Distributed Ledger Technology On Accounting/Auditing/Finance Systems, Ulingeta O. L. Mbamba
Business Management Review
The integration of Quantum Computing (QC) and Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) is poised to fundamentally reshape modern accounting by transforming how financial data is processed, secured, and verified. QC, utilising qubits, will exponentially enhance data analytics, risk assessment, and real-time financial forecasting, accelerating complex auditing tasks far beyond the capabilities of classical systems. In parallel, DLT, such as blockchain, provides a decentralised, immutable record of transactions, significantly increasing transparency and trust. This synergy may enable real-time analysis, continuous auditing, and intelligent automation, converting traditional static, centralised processes into dynamic, transparent ecosystems. Together, this convergence may redefine accounting, auditing, and finance, …

Conference Presentation Abstracts
Abstract: Purpose Treatment of infant perianal abscesses (IPA) remains controversial, with ongoing debate between operative and non-operative management. Recurrence is common and prospective data to guide care are lacking. We performed the first multi-institutional prospective quality improvement (QI) study comparing non-operative to operative IPA management. Methods The primary endpoint was time to complete abscess resolution. Secondary endpoints included surgical intervention (incision and drainage ± fistulotomy) and abscess recurrence. Institutions were recruited through a national research collaborative. IRB approval was obtained individually. Between 2022 and 2025, we prospectively enrolled patients < 1 year of age with an abscess ≤2 cm from the anal verge. Patients with predisposing conditions (e.g. inflammatory bowel disease) were excluded. Management was determined by the treating provider, with either upfront surgical intervention (control group) or non-operative care per our QI protocol (protocol group, Figure 1). Data were collected on management prior to surgical evaluation, presentation, subsequent treatment and outcomes. Statistical analyses were performed using STATA, with p < 0.05 considered significant. Endpoints were compared between groups by non-parametric methods, with denominators based on available data. Results Fourteen institutions participated across the U.S., with a total of 288 patients (108 control, 180 protocol) enrolled. Median follow-up was 0.99 (interquartile range 0.23-3.93) and 1 (0.16-4.56) months for control and protocol groups. Abscess resolution occurred in 155 patients during follow-up (36/71 (51%) control, 119/134 (89%) protocol, p < 0.01). Median time to abscess resolution was 1.21 (0.33-4) and 1.13 (0.57-3.83) months for control and protocol groups (p=0.64). Recurrences were frequent in both cohorts (34/93 (37%) control, 62/153 (41%) protocol). Surgical intervention was significantly more common in the control group: incision and drainage were performed in 61/107 (57%) versus 19/166 (11%) and exam under anesthesia with fistulotomy in 31/106 (29%) versus 20/166 (12%) (both p< 0.01). Conclusions Time to abscess resolution was similar between patients treated with upfront surgical intervention and non-operative management according to our QI protocol. Significantly more patients underwent surgical intervention in the control group, without an impact on time to resolution. Our data support initial non-operative management of infant perianal abscesses, emphasizing antibiotics at initial presentation, sitz baths and family reassurance. Abbreviations: IPA - infant perianal abscess; QI - quality improvement; IRB - institutional review board

A Federated Learning Framework For Data-Sovereign Predictive Maintenance In Distributed Smart Manufacturing, Md Sazol Ahmmed, Sriram Praneeth Isanaka, Frank Liou
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Featured Application: The proposed federated learning framework can be applied in distributed smart manufacturing environments where multiple factories or production facilities collaboratively develop predictive maintenance models without sharing sensitive operational data. This approach is particularly useful for industrial networks involving geographically distributed plants, contract manufacturing partners, and multi-site production systems where data sovereignty and avoidance of raw data sharing are critical. Predictive maintenance enables early detection of machine failures and reduces unexpected production downtime. However, conventional approaches typically rely on centralized data collection and model training which introduce challenges related to data sovereignty, communication overhead and data ownership. To address …

Fetal Vascular Malperfusion And Other Placental Lesions In Relation To Maternal Sars-Cov-2 Exposure: A Case–Control Study, Irene Mwandoto, Marleen Temmerman, Ingrid Gichere, Patricia Okiro
Pathology, East Africa
Background:
The morphologic characteristics of placentas associated with coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) have been described but with varying findings. Studies conducted at the onset of the pandemic reported frequency of Fetal Vascular Malperfusion (FVM), an umbrella term that describes occlusive vasculopathies that affect fetal circulation and their associated sequelae. Morphologic manifestations include thrombosis, avascular villi and vascular stromal karyorrhexis. Associated outcomes include fetal growth restriction, thromboembolic events such as neonatal stroke and fetal demise. Placental lesions associated with a severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection present a unique picture in histology, especially in the attempt to decipher the …

Centre of Excellence in Women and Child Health
Background One in ten newborns in sub-Saharan Africa weigh < 2500 g (i.e. low birthweight [LBW]). Breastfeeding difficulties from birth are common among LBW infants. This study explored the use of trained peer mothers to deliver breastfeeding support to mothers of LBW infants in healthcare facilities in rural Kenya.
Methods Five trained peer mothers provided breastfeeding support to 23 mothers of LBW infants across eight healthcare facilities in Homa Bay County. Qualitative, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 mothers, 10 healthcare providers and 5 peer mothers prior to and during the breastfeeding support intervention. Inductive thematic analysis was used.
Results Three key themes were discovered: mothers valued the confidence the peer mothers gave them to breastfeed their LBW infants, peer mothers found that the training and their previous experience caring for LBW infants enabled them to work collaboratively with mothers …

The Legal Framework For Direct Ocean Carbon Capture And Storage (Volume 2: The United States), Korey Silverman-Roati, Romany M. Webb
Sabin Center for Climate Change Law
This paper, the second in a series of two, focuses on the U.S. legal framework for the marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) approach of direct ocean carbon capture and storage (DOCCS). The first explores DOCCS governance under international law and is available here: https://scholarship.law.columbia.edu/sabin_climate_change/271/.
DOCCS aims to remove some of the carbon currently stored in the ocean and thereby enable it to uptake additional carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. DOCCS is still undergoing research, but early studies suggest it could have significant carbon dioxide removal potential. However, DOCCS could also present environmental and other risks, including from the construction …

From Tech To Table: Moving Sustainable Proteins Beyond Marketplace Bottlenecks, Andy Fitch, Cynthia Hanawalt
Sabin Center for Climate Change Law
Climate advocates may hope to see dramatic commercial breakthroughs over the next several decades that reshape emissions-intensive components of our everyday lives, such as our dietary choices, household energy use, and transportation habits. Yet transforming these consumer sectors will require not only scientific ingenuity and entrepreneurial ambition, but also nimble competition policy to address complex market dynamics.
Sustainable food production likely necessitates substantial departure from traditional livestock-management practices. Agricultural production currently generates about one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions (“GHGs”). Animal livestock account for the largest share, while occupying roughly 40% of the Earth’s habitable land, much of which could …

Background Over the past decade, neuropsychopharmacology has shifted from stagnation to momentum, with first-in-class mechanisms and biomarker-enabled trials spanning psychiatry and neurology.
Methods We narratively synthesized advances from 2013 to 2026 across central nervous system (CNS) discovery and development, including pivotal trials, regulatory actions, digital/real-world evidence, genetics, artificial intelligence (AI), and implementation/global-access themes that are endorsed by international societies.
Results Therapeutic gains include rapid-acting drugs for treatment-resistant depression (intranasal esketamine); psychedelic-assisted therapy for posttraumatic stress disorder and depression; neuroactive steroid γ-aminobutyric acid-A receptor positive allosteric modulators (brexanolone, zuranolone) for postpartum depression; non-dopaminergic muscarinic agonists (xanomeline–trospium) for schizophrenia; orexin receptor antagonists …
Construction Workers Noise Exposure And Hearing Conservation Program Needs, Quinn Noelle Overlin
Construction Workers Noise Exposure And Hearing Conservation Program Needs, Quinn Noelle Overlin
Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones
Noise exposure among construction workers is a pervasive occupational hazard with serious implications for long-term hearing health and overall well-being. This literature review examines the extent of noise exposures in the construction industry and the long-standing need for implementation of effective hearing conservation programs (HCPs). It synthesizes current evidence on exposure levels, health outcomes, and the effectiveness of existing interventions. Findings reveal that construction workers are routinely exposed to noise levels that exceed occupational safety standards, resulting in a heightened risk of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) and associated health consequences. Despite regulatory frameworks and available intervention strategies, substantial gaps persist …
The Southampton Plot: The Case For Innocence (1415), Haley Buckles
The Southampton Plot: The Case For Innocence (1415), Haley Buckles
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates the "Southampton Plot" of 1415, a famous conspiracy to overthrow King Henry V of England. While history often portrays the plotters as simple traitors against the government, this study reexamines original records to show a more complex story. By looking closely at how the English government handled the trials, the research reveals that the English Crown may have exaggerated the threat to strengthen the King’s political power before he invaded France. This study shows that what we call "treason" was often shaped by the government’s need to control its public image and hold on to power. Ultimately, …

Nbl1 Associates With Renal Phenotypes In Mice, But Partial Nbl1 Reduction Does Not Ameliorate Kidney Disease., Courtney Willey, Rei Bufi, Yuka Takemon, Abigail Brackett, Alicia Warren, Samantha Spellacy, Daniel M Gatti, Susan Sheehan, Ron Korstanje
Faculty Research 2026
Increased concentrations of neuroblastoma suppressor of tumorigenicity 1 (NBL1) in the blood have been associated with disease progression in diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and IgA nephropathy. However, it is unclear whether NBL1 is a causal factor for kidney disease and what is driving these increased concentrations in the blood. To test this, we evaluated Nbl1 heterozygous knockout (Nbl1+/−) mice in two models of kidney injury, X-linked Alport syndrome (XLAS) and chronic low-dose cisplatin treatment, and compared them with wild-type (WT) controls. In parallel, we assessed serum NBL1, kidney function, and damage, and performed a genetic analysis for …

Faculty Research 2026
The void spot assay (VSA) is a widely used, noninvasive method for evaluating urinary behavior in rodents, but existing analysis tools are limited in scope, throughput, or accessibility. We developed Spoti-find, a stand-alone, open-source VSA image analysis application that introduces novel, biologically meaningful metrics including void circularity, distance to paper edge, and volume-based binning into primary, micro-, and nanovoids. Designed with usability in mind, Spoti-find features a graphical interface that enables manual or semiautomated spot identification, adjustable thresholds, and streamlined data export without the need for coding expertise. We validated Spoti-find across diverse datasets, showing strong interuser consistency, sensitivity to …

Functional Equivalence Of Γ- And X-Ray Irradiation For Long-Term Peripheral Blood Chimerism And Acute Myeloid Leukemia Transplant Outcomes In Mice., Shawn David, Griffin J Nye, Elizabeth Eudy, Ewelina Bolcun-Filas, Jennifer J. Trowbridge, Kira Young
Faculty Research 2026
Total body irradiation is routinely used for myeloablation before a mouse hematopoietic cell transplant. Widespread transition from 137Cs g irradiators to x-ray systems has raised questions about whether these modalities yield equivalent biological outcomes. Although prior studies compared g and x-ray irradiation in syngeneic transplants, their performance in reciprocal congenic models and in primary acute myeloid leukemia (AML) transplants remains unclear. Here, we systematically evaluated g and x-ray irradiation across dose conditions and tested dose equivalents in CD45.1/CD45.2 reciprocal transplants and in AML transplant models. Although each modality exhibited distinct early effects, both ultimately supported comparable long-term donor peripheral blood …

In broad terms, jazz is a useful metaphor for American democratic ideals because both are a process, not a product. To the musicians who make it, jazz is not so much a genre as it is a way of making music, even a philosophy of music making. Similarly, democracy is not a destination so much as it is the structural means of co-existing with people who have politically liked-minded agendas as well as with those who have competing, contrary goals. Theoretically, if the American ideals of freedom and equality were ever attained, we could no more take our hands off …

As our community-engaged learning project for our Community Psychology class, we volunteered at the Overcomers International Fellowship (OIF) Dream Center. The OIF Dream Center is a nonprofit organization that provides previously incarcerated men with resources and programs to help them as they enter back into society. Among these resources are housing, food, medical care, support groups, and treatment. Additionally, the Dream Center helps men overcome mental health obstacles, disabilities, and chemical dependencies. These programs enable residents to prepare for life outside of prison. They are given opportunities to further their education, find jobs, attend therapy, and reconnect with their families. …

Background: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of acute dietary nitrate (NO3−) and caffeine (CAF) supplementation on end power (EP) and work performed above EP (WEP) in trained male cyclists during a 3 min all-out test (3MT) on a cycle ergometer.
Methods: Fifteen healthy, trained male cyclists (28.5 ± 5.3 years, 79.2 ± 9.1 kg, VO2peak 55.2 ± 5.6 mL·kg−1·min−1) completed four exercise trials in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study design separated by 3–7 days. The four experimental conditions were placebo beverage (nitrate-depleted) + placebo capsule, nitrate-rich beetroot juice + placebo capsule (BR), …

Health Services and Informatics Research
Peer Recovery Support Specialists (PRSSs) are certified professionals that provide social, informational, and logistical supportto people in recovery fromsubstance use disorders. In this study, we report the findings from design work completed with a teamof PRSSsto define workflowand informationalneeds for the developmentofa novel point of care software. Through our qualitative research we uncovered a significant amount of undocumented work that is necessary for a PRSS to provide individualized support to their clients. Thus, much PRSS work is not quantified and rendered "invisible." We present technology design strategies that help quantify these tasks and illuminate the complexity of PRSS work.

At the Crossing is a body of photographic work that stemmed from daily walks through the Genesee Valley Park. Having moved to a new and unfamiliar place, these walks were a way of drawing closer to the city of Rochester and the people who call it home. In the process, I discovered the vitality and democratic function of the park and its relationship to the larger city. In this space, people gather, celebrate, rest, and dream. It exists as a wild refuge, a pressure valve within the overall function of the city. In this way, it is one of the …
