Women Adrift, Sporting Girls And The Unfortunate Poor: A Gendered History Of Homelessness In Portland 1900-1929, Leanne Claire Serbulo
Dissertations and Theses
This purpose of this study is to incorporate women into the history of homelessness. Women's experience is missing from the narrative of industrial era homelessness, which causes researchers to make a distinction between the modem day homeless population and its predecessors. This distinction prevents researchers from examining the long term structural causes of homelessness and analyzing the role homelessness plays in U.S. society. This study explores the population characteristics and living conditions of three groups of women who were considered homeless during the early decades of the twentieth century in Portland. These groups include single working women who lived away …
Implementation Of Measures That Establish An Atmosphere Of Safety, Order, And Discipline On School Grounds, Robert N. Baldwin
Implementation Of Measures That Establish An Atmosphere Of Safety, Order, And Discipline On School Grounds, Robert N. Baldwin
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This applied dissertation was designed to determine the effects that specific interventions have on student behavior change regarding drug and alcohol use on school grounds. A change in leadership philosophy, drug and alcohol survey results, and school community input were the impetus for a study as to the effectiveness of interventions of behavioral indicators. The researcher was clearly interested in systematically reducing alcohol and other drug use on school grounds in order to promote an environment of high-level learning. School accountability was focused on increasing student achievement levels in English language arts and math. A review of related research substantiated …
Improving The Behavior Of Primary School Students With Involvement From Students, Staff, And Families, Judith Spieth Justice
Improving The Behavior Of Primary School Students With Involvement From Students, Staff, And Families, Judith Spieth Justice
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This applied dissertation was designed to provide better behavior from primary-aged (grades kindergarten through grade 3) school students. Primary aged students were exhibiting disruptive behavior, and this research delved into the evidence, causes, and solutions for disruptive behavior. Disruptive behavior interrupted the learning environment and threatened the physical and emotional safety of the school. Students who behaved inappropriately often perceived themselves as "troublemakers" and established a pattern early in school years. Because it is easier to eliminate problem behaviors before they become a pattern, the writer sought to break the cycle of disruptive behavior in primary ages.
The writer developed …

Improving School Attendance Of Special Education Students Through Tangible Rewards And Concrete Incentives, Lenell Q. Navarre
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This applied dissertation was designed to provide concrete incentives and tangible rewards for the special education students in a high school. Mediocre attendance is a serious problem in many schools with students identified as meeting the criteria for special education. It impacts the student, school, parents, and community. Research shows that poor attendance can be associated to behavioral problems, academic failure, and leading to dropout tendencies.
The writer developed a program that provided concrete incentives and tangible rewards. Planned solution strategies to improve attendance included (a) distributing concrete incentives to students, (b) distributing tangible rewards to students, (c) forming an …

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
During the 1998-1999 through 2000-2001 school years, William M. Raines Senior High School (WMRSHS) experienced a gradual increase in the number of teenage pregnancies among the female population at the school. During the 1998-1999 school year, there were 91 (10.0%) pregnancies among 907 females; during the 1999-2000 school year, there were 97 (9.6%) pregnancies among 1,012 females; and, during the 2000-2001 school year, there were 102 (10.3%) pregnancies among 997 females in the student population. This represented a 12.1% increase in the number of teenage pregnancies among the student population at WMRSHS.
The strategy implemented to decrease the pregnancies at …
Attachment Theory And The Secondary Student: Notes To Teachers, George H. Biggs
Attachment Theory And The Secondary Student: Notes To Teachers, George H. Biggs
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This applied dissertation was designed to provide knowledge of attachment theory to secondary teachers in middle schools and high schools. Teachers were working with students who were displaying behaviors caused by student disruptive attachment to a primary caregiver. However, the teachers, not aware of attachment theory, misinterpreted the reason for the disruptive class behavior and associated the behavior with the behaviors of students diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
The writer developed a series of monthly workshops that middle school teachers attended. The workshops focused on the following topics: attachment theory, children’s multiple foster placements, and the effects of multiple …

Connected Math Program: A Math Intervention Program For Sixth-Grade Students, Kathleen Mrozak
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The objective of this study was to find a means of increasing math achievement in the middle school grade levels of the City School District of Albany. Low math achievement was documented on the Grade 8 math assessment of the New York State Testing Program for 1998-2001. Possible causes include poor alignment of the curriculum to the state learning standards and the state testing program in math. In addition, professional development on topics of math reform needed to be made available to middle school math teachers.
The purpose of this study was to determine whether a program of math reform …

Identification Of Competencies Required For Clinical Education In Therapeutic Recreation With The Development Of A Continuing Education Plan To Enhance Competence Of Clinical Educators, Deborah A. Hutchins
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The applied dissertation was designed to identify the competencies necessary for the effective supervision of internship students in therapeutic recreation, and to develop a continuing education plan to enhance the competence of therapeutic recreation professionals who provide internship supervision. The competencies required of internship supervision in therapeutic recreation had not been systematically identified. This problem led to the inconsistency of therapeutic recreation professionals providing supervision to students during the internship experience that resulted in poor student outcomes. This problem has a potential effect on the overall competence of entry-level therapeutic recreation professionals.

Evidence For The Involvement Of A Tsetse Midgut Lectin-Trypsin Complex In Differentiation Of Bloodstream-Form Trypanosomes, L. U. Abubakar, G. Zimba, C. Wells, F. Mulaa, E. O. Osir
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
We have previously described a bloodmeal-induced molecule (lectin-trypsin complex) from the midgut of the tsetse fly, Glossina longipennis, with both lectin and trypsin activities (Osir et al., 1995). In this paper, we report on the isolation of a similar molecule from the midguts of Glossina fuscipes fuscipes and provide direct evidence for its involvement in the development of African trypanosomes. The molecule (native Mr ∼65,700) has two non-covalently linked subunits, Mr ∼28,800 and Mr ∼35,700. The native molecule was found to be capable of inducing differentiation of bloodstream-form trypanosomes into procyclic (midgut forms) in vitro. In the assays, specific antibodies …

Three lepidopteran stemborers, Busseola fusca Fuller (Noctuidae), Sesamia calamistis Hampson (Noctuidae), and Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Crambidae), were evaluated for their acceptability for oviposition and suitability for development by two populations of the larval endoparasitoid Cotesia sesamiae (Cameron) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) occurring in the highveld (>1200m) and lowveld (<600 m) regions of Zimbabwe. Mating studies were also conducted to determine reproductive compatibility between the populations. Both C. sesamiae populations preferred the noctuids to C. partellus for oviposition. possibly reflecting differences in evolutionary history. Although B. fusca was partially suitable for development of lowveld C. sesamiae, all three hosts were suitable for development of the highveld population. Crosses between highveld and lowveld C. sesamiae were compatible, and were generally not different from the intra-population crosses in developmental time, % adult emergence and sex ratio. However, broods were much larger when highveld males were used in the mating combinations. We conclude that although there is host overlap and probably a considerable degree of outbreeding between the two C. sesamiae populations, there are still significant genetic differences between them. Within Zimbabwe, it is unlikely that the deliberate introduction of either population outside its region of occurrence will give meaningful stemborer control. © 2003 Elsevier Science (USA). DC. We propose the names uncinanone A, B, and C for compounds 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Isolated fractions containing uncinanone B (2) induced germination of seeds from the parasitic weed Striga hermonthica (Del.) Benth. and fractions containing uncinanone C (3) moderately inhibited radical growth, the first example of a newly identified potential allelopathic mechanism to prevent S. hermonthica parasitism. © 2003 …
Signaling And Regulation Of G Protein-Coupled Receptors In Airway Smooth Muscle., Charlotte K Billington, Raymond B Penn
Signaling And Regulation Of G Protein-Coupled Receptors In Airway Smooth Muscle., Charlotte K Billington, Raymond B Penn
Department of Medicine Faculty Papers
Signaling through G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) mediates numerous airway smooth muscle (ASM) functions including contraction, growth, and "synthetic" functions that orchestrate airway inflammation and promote remodeling of airway architecture. In this review we provide a comprehensive overview of the GPCRs that have been identified in ASM cells, and discuss the extent to which signaling via these GPCRs has been characterized and linked to distinct ASM functions. In addition, we examine the role of GPCR signaling and its regulation in asthma and asthma treatment, and suggest an integrative model whereby an imbalance of GPCR-derived signals in ASM cells contributes to the …
