The Role Of Turkish Percussion In The History And Development Of The Orchestral Percussion Section, D. Doran Bugg Jan 2003

The Role Of Turkish Percussion In The History And Development Of The Orchestral Percussion Section, D. Doran Bugg

LSU Major Papers

The fascination of eighteenth century Western composers with the Eastern percussion instruments of the Turks was the impetus behind the initial use of percussion instruments in the orchestra. Consequently, the era beginning in the late eighteenth-century when percussion instruments were first included deserves reexamination. The objectives of this monograph include the examination of the manner in which composers first utilized Turkish percussion (excluding kettledrums) in the orchestra. This study then investigates the subsequent history of these instruments and manner in which composers utilized them, leading to their recognition as musical instruments in their own right. The findings of this study …

Approaches To Statutory Interpretation And Legislative History In France, Claire M. Germain Jan 2003

Approaches To Statutory Interpretation And Legislative History In France, Claire M. Germain

UF Law Faculty Publications

In France, Justice Jackson's question about where to look for the meaning of a statute would be phrased in broader terms and would not be limited to the question of whether to look only at the words of a statute or also at the legislative intent. French law starts from the premise that statutes and codes are the foundations of the legal system in the same way that cases are the foundation of the common-law system. Because of the primacy of written law in France, statutory interpretation lies at the heart of French law. Statutory interpretation is very flexible, and …

From 34 Cents To 37 Cents: The Unconstitutionality Of The Postal Monopoly, Christina M. Bates Jan 2003

From 34 Cents To 37 Cents: The Unconstitutionality Of The Postal Monopoly, Christina M. Bates

Missouri Law Review

Article 1, Section 8 of the United State Constitution (the “Postal Clause”) states that “The Congress shall have the power . . . to establish Post Offices and Post Roads.” Though at ratification the Postal Clause was inserted with very little discussion, there was increasing debate, involving such famous names as Lysander Spooner, as to whether or not the Postal Clause granted Congress a monopoly over the American postal system. In fact, some adventurous Americans, who did not believe that the Postal Clause granted to Congress a postal monopoly, created their own private mail services that nearly eradicated the Post …

Sedimentology, Petrography, And Tectonic Significance Of Cretaceous To Lower Tertiary Deposits In The Tingri -Gyangtse Area, Southern Tibet, Bin Zhu Jan 2003

Sedimentology, Petrography, And Tectonic Significance Of Cretaceous To Lower Tertiary Deposits In The Tingri -Gyangtse Area, Southern Tibet, Bin Zhu

Geology Theses and Dissertations

Cretaceous and Lower Tertiary sedimentary rocks are well exposed in the Tingri-Gyangtse area, tectonically belonging to the central Tibetan Himalayas, to the south of the Indus-Yarlung-Zangbo suture. The Cretaceous Tianba flysch in the Tianba-Jiabula region is correlative with the Giumal Group sandstone in Zanskar, northwestern Himalayas. There are significant amounts of chrome-rich spinels in turbiditic sandstones from the upper part of Tianba Flysch, which might suggest ophiolite derivation and a Cretaceous ophiolite obduction event on the northern Indian continental margin in southern Tibet. However the compositional range of these detrital spinels closely matches that of spinels from intra-plate basalts. About …

Late Holocene Hydrologic And Climatic Variability In The Walker Lake Basin, Nevada And California, Fasong Yuan Jan 2003

Late Holocene Hydrologic And Climatic Variability In The Walker Lake Basin, Nevada And California, Fasong Yuan

Geology Theses and Dissertations

Oxygen and carbon isotopic measurements of the total inorganic carbon (TIC) fraction of sediments from Walker Lake (Nevada, USA) were completed at a decadal-scale resolution spanning the last ∼3000 years. On the basis of radiocarbon dating of the total organic fraction of cored sediments, the late Holocene isotope record recorded a relatively dry climate in Period LH-1 (1000 BC to AD 800), a relatively wet climate punctuated by a few severe droughts in Period LH-2 (AD 800 to 1900), and an anthropogenical perturbation era (L14-h: 1900–2000). Relative high accumulation rates in Period LH-2 (AD 800 to 1900) provided detailed information …
