Structural And Functional Adaptations To Extreme Temperatures In Psychrophilic, Mesophilic, And Thermophilic Dna Ligases, Daphné Georlette, Benjamin Damien, Vinciane Blaise, Eric Depiereux, Vladimir N. Uversky, Charles Gerday, Georges Feller Jan 2003

Structural And Functional Adaptations To Extreme Temperatures In Psychrophilic, Mesophilic, And Thermophilic Dna Ligases, Daphné Georlette, Benjamin Damien, Vinciane Blaise, Eric Depiereux, Vladimir N. Uversky, Charles Gerday, Georges Feller

Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

Psychrophiles, host of permanently cold habitats, display metabolic fluxes comparable to those exhibited by mesophilic organisms at moderate temperatures. These organisms have evolved by producing, among other peculiarities, cold-active enzymes that have the properties to cope with the reduction of chemical reaction rates induced by low temperatures. The emerging picture suggests that these enzymes display a high catalytic efficiency at low temperatures through an improved flexibility of the structural components involved in the catalytic cycle, whereas other protein regions, if not implicated in catalysis, may be even more rigid than their mesophilic counterparts. In return, the increased flexibility leads to …

The Byrd Amendment Battle: American Trade Politics At The Wto, Claire Hervey Jan 2003

The Byrd Amendment Battle: American Trade Politics At The Wto, Claire Hervey

UC Law SF International Law Review

The Byrd Amendment has been controversial in both domestic U.S. politics and in international trade law since its enactment. In the international sphere, the controversy surrounds its validity under the WTO, the world's strongest supranational legal regime. In the largest joint dispute resolution action in the history of the WTO, thirty countries challenged the Byrd Amendment as a violation of the ban on governmental subsidies, and won. The U.S. Congress failed to comply with this ruling by its implementation deadline (December 27, 2003) as well as with several other decisions of the WTO, deepening the rift between America and its …

Revisiting The Impact Of California's Mandatory Custody Mediation Program On Victims Of Domestic Violence Through A Feminist Positionality Lens, Lauri Boxer-Macomber Jan 2003

Revisiting The Impact Of California's Mandatory Custody Mediation Program On Victims Of Domestic Violence Through A Feminist Positionality Lens, Lauri Boxer-Macomber

St. Thomas Law Review

In 1981, California became the first state in the country to enact mandatory child custody mediation legislation. Today, all family law cases, even those with histories or allegations of domestic violence, are subject to mediation. The legislative intent in promulgating the mandatory custody mediation program was noble. The program was designed to reduce animosity between parents, develop agreements that keep children's best interests paramount, and allow children close and continuing contact with both their parents. However, the question of whether mediation is an appropriate process to use in cases of domestic violence has been widely debated. A significant amount of …

The Great Cookie Caper: Internet Privacy And Target Marketing At Home And Abroad, Jason A. Kotzker Jan 2003

The Great Cookie Caper: Internet Privacy And Target Marketing At Home And Abroad, Jason A. Kotzker

St. Thomas Law Review

Did George Orwell have it all wrong? Is Big Brother really a multinational company with a Web site employing cookies; enabling it to track its visitors' every move? The Internet's popularity as a virtual marketplace and the resulting boom of e-commerce has developed exponentially due to the speed and convenience of on-line shopping and access to information. However, this technological advancement also allows for the collection, storage, and transmittal of personal information. With unlimited access to a vast array of personal information, advertising agencies conduct marketing campaigns targeted at individual e-consumers. Unfortunately, most consumers are unaware that they divulge personal …

The Myth Of Machismo: An Everyday Reality For Latin American Women, Patricia M. Hernandez Jan 2003

The Myth Of Machismo: An Everyday Reality For Latin American Women, Patricia M. Hernandez

St. Thomas Law Review

This paper attempts to present a loose, culturally driven definition of machismo and how this cultural belief affects a woman's "place" in Latin America. With this, another aim is to present a view of the available statistics regarding battering in Latin America. Finally, it is necessary to correlate machismo with the available laws and the ineffectiveness of their application. It is important to also recognize that women's rights groups within Latin America have attempted to pursue certain new avenues to combat domestic violence. Furthermore, the international community has begun to analyze the benefits and consequences associated with the attempt to …

Semblances Of Sovereignty: The Constitution, The State, And American Citizenship, T. Alexander Aleinikoff, Harvard University Press, 2002. Pp. 223, Harvey Gee

St. Thomas Law Review

A major contribution to the contemporary thinking about immigration, citizenship, and assimilation is offered by Georgetown Law Center Law Professor T. Alexander Aleinikoff in his recent volume, Semblances of Sovereignty: The Constitution, the State, and American Citizenship. The book helps to advance the immigration debate and define what it means to be an American. Aleinikoff paints with broad theoretical strokes with academics in mind. Relying on theory, he asks readers to consider how the court has treated the issue of "citizenship" and how it has defined its boundaries and limitations. He also addresses the reasons why traditional notions of immigrant …

Prenatal Tort Law And The Personhood Of The Unborn Child: A Separate Legal Existence, Gregory J. Roden Jan 2003

Prenatal Tort Law And The Personhood Of The Unborn Child: A Separate Legal Existence, Gregory J. Roden

St. Thomas Law Review

This article will examine the state of prenatal tort and wrongful death law at the time the Supreme Court decided Roe v. Wade and compare such examination to Justice Blackmun's assessment of it in his Roe opinion. Justice Blackmun's opinion in Roe v. Wade briefly takes up the area of prenatal tort law wherein he discusses some of the (allegedly) inchoate rights of the unborn: In areas other than criminal abortion, the law has been reluctant to endorse any theory that life, as we recognize it, begins before life birth or to accord legal rights to the unborn except in …

The Suppression Of Diversity, Adrian J. Lottie, Phyllis A. Clemens Noda Jan 2003

The Suppression Of Diversity, Adrian J. Lottie, Phyllis A. Clemens Noda

Ethnic Studies Review

Is it a systematic strategy or a mutation of millennial ferver that drives the escalating challenges to the civil rights of this nation's racial, linguistic, and national origin minorities? Increasing juridical, legislative, and popular assaults on affirmative action policies coupled with the sometimes less heralded emergence of a de facto U.S. language policy are sweeping through the states. These activities draw on a consistent repertoire of approaches from the invocation of the very language and concepts of the civil rights movement to the isolationist "buzz-words" of early twentieth century advocates of "Americanization." In an effort to legitimize their efforts this …

Religious Values, Legal Ethics, And Poverty Law: A Response To Thomas Shaffer, Stephen Wizner Jan 2003

Religious Values, Legal Ethics, And Poverty Law: A Response To Thomas Shaffer, Stephen Wizner

Fordham Urban Law Journal

Stephen Wizner provides a response to Thomas Shaffer's article on his pursuit of social justice through using religious figures as role models. Wizner argues that Shaffer is clearly right in asserting that there is much in the prophetic literature, and, indeed, in the entire Hebrew Bible and the New Testament, that could serve as a moral impetus for social justice lawyering. One can find considerable support for Shaffer's religious thesis in the texts that he cites, and in the words of the prophets he looks to as role models. Nevertheless, Wizner presents a skeptical response to Professor Shaffer's thoughtful essay. …

The International Significance Of An Instance Of Urban Environmental Inequity In Tijauna, Mexico , Tseming Yang Jan 2003

The International Significance Of An Instance Of Urban Environmental Inequity In Tijauna, Mexico , Tseming Yang

Fordham Urban Law Journal

Environmental equity problems are not exclusive to any one nation. With a lack of regulations, communities of color and poor, and the prevalence of social marginalization, issues of environmental inequality may occur even more vividly in countries with this climate. In Tijuana, Mexico, Metales y Derivados, an abandoned lead smelter, left its surrounding community, Colonia Cilpancingo, with a litany of health related issues and a hunt for justice from its failure to act with appropriate environmental stewardship. Having gained attention in the international news and exposing a failure of regulatory policies and transnational exploitation, Metales is an example of the …

Restoring The Light : Ministry To German Prisoners Of War In America During The Second World War, Melissa Weldon Jan 2003

Restoring The Light : Ministry To German Prisoners Of War In America During The Second World War, Melissa Weldon

Master's Theses

In 1942, the United States committed itself to the retention of German prisoners of war on American soil. Over 350,000 German soldiers lived and worked in several hundred camps throughout the contiguous United States. These prisoners required not only food and shelter, but spiritual care as well. The Geneva Convention of 1929 granted prisoners of war the right to worship according to their faith. The United States government not only permitted, but also encouraged, ministry to the prisoners in its care. Relying on the assistance of international relief organizations and national church bodies, the Office of the Provost Marshal General …

"What Was I Created For, I Wonder?" : Occupation For Women In Shirley And Cranford, Julie Anne Tignor Jan 2003

"What Was I Created For, I Wonder?" : Occupation For Women In Shirley And Cranford, Julie Anne Tignor

Master's Theses

Charlotte Brontë's Shirley and Elizabeth Gaskell's Cranford unite in asking and answering the question of what unmarried women were supposed to do with their time and talents in Victorian England, considering the constraints of both gentility and economic conditions. In writing these novels, Brontë and Gaskell joined mid-nineteenth century feminists such as Francis Power Cobbe and Florence Nightingale in discussing women's occupation. Cranford, rather than presenting the typical young unmarried woman as its heroine, features a community of old maids as its "heroines," revealing their story through the narration of Mary Smith. Shirley's Caroline Helstone examines the socially accepted …
