Why Did They Emigrate? An Examination Of Five Danish Farming Periodicals During The Period From 1860 To 1900 To Determine What Motivated Farm Laborers To Emigrate., Jette Mackintosh Jan 2003

Why Did They Emigrate? An Examination Of Five Danish Farming Periodicals During The Period From 1860 To 1900 To Determine What Motivated Farm Laborers To Emigrate., Jette Mackintosh

The Bridge

One question in emigration research has always intrigued me: Why did Peter Jensen find conditions in Denmark so unbearable that he could stand them no longer or why was he so tempted by the prospects on the other side of the Atlantic that he emigrated, while his neighbor, Jens Petersen, who apparently had exactly the same conditions, stayed at home and put up with things? Unfortunately it can probably never be answered satisfactorily. It may be possible to find reasons for some of the emigrations in letters and diaries, but we have no basis for comparison in the form of …

Regulating Babylon: Religion And Rebellion In Pre-Revolutionary North Carolina, Sarah E. King '03

Honors Projects, History

Past historians have situated the Regulator conflict in largely economic or social terms. James Whittenburg and others claim that at the time of the Regulation, a new and vast social division was present in backcountry society. The established backcountry settlers-the agrarian, yeoman farmers of Hermon Husbands' ilk-resented their recent displacement by mercantile and political interests. The Regulation, then, simply "crystallized widespread anxiety over the swift economic and political changes taking place in the piedmont." The Regulators used fleeting issues of the moment to rectify their lessening influence in North Carolina. Rachel Klein similarly argues in Unification of a Slave State …

Enduring Deep Sorrow: Depression Among Religious College Women, Kara E. Wolff '03 Jan 2003

Enduring Deep Sorrow: Depression Among Religious College Women, Kara E. Wolff '03

Honors Projects

The transition into college can lead to stress which can lead to depression in both men and women (e.g. Lopez & Gormley, 2002). Depression cripples both men and women. The lifetime risk of major depression is 10-25% for women and 5-12% for men (Greenspan, 2001). Mild symptoms rob men and women of energy needed for academic and social pursuits (Beeber, 1999). Depression results in poor over-all functioning, emotional behavioral problems and low self-esteem (Reinherz, Giaconia, Hauf, Wasserman & Silverman, 1999). Individuals with depression also have more problems in intimate relationships with friends and family (Reinherz et al., 1999). This exploratory …

Japanese Attitudes Toward American Business Involvement In Japan: An Empirical Investigation Revisited, Syed H. Akhter, Toshikazu Hamada

Generation Xers in Japan continue to draw increasing attention not only because they constitute a promising segment for many products and services but also because they are expected to play a critical role in shaping their country’s political and economic relations with other countries. This paper examines their attitudes toward US products, businesses, and government. It also examines their behavioral intentions and their expectations of their government in terms of managing American business involvement in Japan. Findings and implications are presented.

An Observation Checklist For Facility-Based Normal Labor And Delivery Practices: The Galaa Study, Hania Sholkamy, Nevine Hassanein, Mohamed Cherine, Amr Elnoury, Miral Breebaart, Karima Khalil

Reproductive Health

Globally, almost 515,000 women die every year from maternal causes related to pregnancy or childbirth. Most research focuses on identifying high-risk cases or managing obstetric emergencies, in an attempt to reduce women’s risk of dying of maternal causes. While facility practices for normal labor were extensively examined and revised in Europe and North America in the 1970s and 1980s, little is known about facility practices for normal labor in many parts of the developing world. It is important for practitioners and policymakers to know the nature and frequency of common facility practices for normal labor. Substandard care has been identified …

Kenya: Communities Support Adolescent Reproductive Health Education, Frontiers In Reproductive Health

Reproductive Health

Young people in Kenya have limited knowledge of reproductive health (RH) and face many challenges in their transition to adulthood. Chief among these challenges is the high prevalence of HIV/AIDS among adults and its increasing incidence among rural youth. In 1999, FRONTIERS initiated a three-year project in Kenya to test the feasibility, effectiveness, and cost of interventions to improve adolescent RH. The project, implemented jointly with the Kenyan government and the Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH), was part of a four-country study that examined ways to improve knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of adolescents aged 10 to 19 years. …
