Will a simple global masking model based on image detection be successful at predicting the readability of transparent text? Text readability was measured for two types of transparent text: additive (as occurs in head-up displays) and multiplicative (which occurs in see-through liquid crystal display virtual reality displays). Text contrast and background texture were manipulated. Data from two previous experiments were also included (one using very low contrasts on plain backgrounds, and the other using higher-contrast opaque text on both plain and textured backgrounds). The dependency of giant magnetoresistance (GMR) on the nonmagnetic matrix in nanogranular Co²⁰ (Cu^1-xGe^x)⁸⁰ ribbons was studied. When the matrix Cu is substituted with semiconductor Ge, the magnetoresistance transitioned from negative to positive at low temperatures. The positive GMR effect is closely related to the quantity of Co/Co³Ge²/Co junctionlike configurations. This result provides evidence for the competition between two types of electronic transport mechanisms in the magnetic granular ribbons: (i) electronic spin-dependent scattering, inducing a negative magnetoresistance and (ii) Coulomb blockade of the electronic tunneling, inducing a positive magnetoresistance.

Objective: First, to determine the distribution of the estimated sources of sleep spindles, and alpha and mu rhythms based on whole-head magnetoencephalogram (MEG) recordings; second, to scrutinize the physiological relevance of the dipole fit algorithm in localizing on-going normal rhythmic activities.

Methods: One hundred and fifty-one channels were used to record spontaneous MEG activity during wakefulness and superficial sleep in 4 normal subjects. The equivalent dipolar sources were estimated by a new “dipole fit algorithm” and projected on the corresponding magnetic resonance images.

This paper addresses the question, do the rotational forces in the hovering fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster reflect something different (the Magnus effect) or more of the same (circulatory-and-attached-vortex force)? The results of an unsteady blade-element model using empirically derived force coefficients from translating (root-oscillating) wings are compared with recent results derived from both the measured forces on a dynamically scaled Drosophila wing and the computational fluid dynamic (CFD)-modeled forces on a virtual Drosophila wing. Chemokine receptor expression is exquisitely regulated on T cell subsets during the course of their migration to inflammatory sites. In the present study we demonstrate that CCR4 expression marks a pathogenic population of autoimmune T cells. CCR4 was found exclusively on memory CD4(+) T cells during the progression of disease in NOD mice. Cells expressing the CCR4 ligand TARC (thymus- and activation-regulated chemokine) were detected within infiltrated islets from prediabetic mice. Interestingly, neutralization of macrophage-derived chemokine (MDC) with Ab caused a significant reduction of CCR4-positive T cells within the pancreatic infiltrates and inhibited the development of insulitis and diabetes. A day-long conference, Dateline: The West, was held December 6, 2002 at Boise State University and was presented by the Andrus Center for Public Policy, the Idaho Statesman, and the Gannett Co. Pacific Group. Saint Francois d'Assise, Olivier Messiaen's only operatic work, received its world premiere in Paris in 1983. It has rarely been performed since, partly because of the sheer scope and audacity of the project, but also because of its subject matter--faith itself. This fall, the San Francisco Opera, newly directed by Pamela Rosenberg, gave the opera its U.S. premiere in its namesake city. To determine whether women participated in sport, even these young nulliparous female athletes, are more prone to have urinary incontinence in Taiwan. Four hundred and forty- six young female students were included in this study. All of them were nulliparous. Our subjects consisted of 260 varsity athletes, 106 athletes of high school, and 80 varsity non-athletes. They were requested to complete questionnaires on the type of major sport, intensity of training, menstrual history, sport injury, and urinary incontinence. The results showed that the athletes group had a greater body height and weight and a higher prevalence of urinary incontinence (10.0% …

The purpose of the study was to investigate the interaction between pain, pain behavior, anxiety, and muscle tension during electrodiagnosis, and to examine the anxiolytic and pain-relieving effects of traditional Chinese music. Two measuring tools, including electrodiagnosis pain behavior checklist (EPBC) and electromyography muscle tension scale (EMTS) were developed to objectively assess the subject's pain and muscle tension, respectively. Sixty-one patients were included in this study and were randomly divided into background music group and control group. EPBC and EMTS were concurrently measured during electrodiagnosis, which consisted of nerve conduction velocity and electromyography (EMG) studies. Linear analog anxiety scale (LAAS) …

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome (RSDS) is a chronic painful syndrome, which may cause extreme pain and disability of the involved limbs of the patients. The unknown of causes of RSDS keep patients and clinicians from early prevention of this syndrome. Smoking may affect the sympathetic system. The purpose of the study was to measure the peak pressure under the metatarsal heads (MTH) of young men and women in walking with high resolution pressure system and to determine their reliability. The peak pressure of sixteen health men and women, aged from twenty-one to thirty-five years-old, were measured at the first, second and third metatarsal head by high resolution pressure system for ten repetitions using first-step method. Peak pressure at the second MTH (68.2±43.9 N/cm2 for women, 52.6±21.1 N/cm2 for men) was significantly higher than the first MTH (28.4±13.8 N/cm2 for women, 35.5±18.2 N/cm2 for men) and third …
