Spinal Cord Infarction: Report Of Two Cases, Nien-Chin Hsiao, Chung-Lan Kao, Rai-Chi Chan

Spinal cord infarction is a rare disease. It is even more uncommon that spinal cord infarction occurs in a patient without any cardiovascular disease. Anterior spinal artery syndrome is much more common than the posterior spinal artery syndrome due to the difference in collateral supply. We present two patients with spinal cord infarction. In both patients, the clinical picture was stereotyped: sudden onset of weakness of limbs, sensory loss below the level of infarction and sphincter dysfunction. Treatment for the two patients was supportive and they had a good recovery over a period of weeks.

Progressive Ischemic Myelopathy Due To Painless Aortic Dissection: A Casereport, Hung-Chang Chueh, Shu-Huan Lin, Li-Sheng Huang

The clinical appearance of aortic dissection is characterized by the sudden, acute chest or abdominal pain, accompanied by coldness in the limbs and sweating-like symptoms of shock. Absent pulse or asymmetric pulse was observed in some patients. If the feeding arteries of the specific organs are located in the false lumen, this may lead to sudden loss of blood supply to the tissue e.g. spinal cord, resulting in cord damage. In the previous reports, approximately 20% of the individuals with aortic dissection might have neurological deficit resulting from insufficiency of blood supply. The compressible magnetohydrodynamic Kelvin-Helmholtz instability occurs in two varieties, one that can be called incompressible as it exists in the limit of vanishing compressibility (primary instability), while the other exists only when compressibility is included in the model (secondary instability). In previous work we developed techniques to investigate the stability of a surface of discontinuity between two different uniform ows. Our treatment includes arbitrary jumps of the velocity and magnetic fields as well as of density and temperature, with no restriction on the wave vector of the modes. Detecting And Predicting Spatial And Interannual Patterns Of Temperate Forest Springtime Phenology In The Eastern U.S., J P. Jenkins, Rob Braswell, Steve Frolking, John Aber

We performed a diagnostic analysis of AVHRR-NDVI and gridded, temperature data for the deciduous forests of the eastern U.S., calibrating temperature accumulation model with satellite data for 1982–1993. The model predicts interannual variability in onset date based upon year-to-year changes in springtime temperature. RMS error over the period ranges from 6.9 days in the northern portion of the domain to 10.7 days in the south. The analysis revealed a relationship between temperature accumulation and satellite derived onset date (rank correlation = 0.31–0.62). The required temperature accumulation threshold can be expressed as a function of mean temperature (R² of 0.90) …

This paper ponders the tide of public discourse which arose in response to the Palestinian martyrdom bombings in the recent Al Aqusa Intifada, in which social scientists and anthropologists have been "active" participants, and where the reasons and causes of this phenomenon have been the centre of debate. The paper questions the value of this analytical posture by placing it next to a habit of everyday discursive practice the author of the paper became aware of during fieldwork with politically active in the First Intifada. As part of our Evidence Extraction and Link Discovery (EELD) project, we proposed to use Transformation Based Learning (TBL) to learn domain-specific specializations for generic event extractions. The primary goal of our learning task was to reduce the amount of human effort required for specializing generic event extractions to domains that are new and specific. Three initial annotation cycles and one annotation review and correction cycle involving a total of 70 documents were completed, with slightly over 32 hours required for the entire annotation effort; where possible, the annotation cycles started with bootstrapped files resulting from the application of TBL …

Concept Tree Based Clustering Visualization With Shaded Similarity Matrices, Bei Yu, Jun Wang, Les Gasser

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

One of the problems with existing clustering methods is that the interpretation of clusters may be difficult. Two different approaches have been used to solve this problem: conceptual clustering in machine learning and clustering visualization in statistics and graphics. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the benefits of combining clustering visualization and conceptual clustering to obtain better cluster interpretations. In our research we have combined concept trees for conceptual clustering with shaded similarity matrices for visualization. Experimentation shows that the two interpretation approaches can complement each other to help us understand data better.

Thermal performance ratings, derived from the FSEC testing and certification program, are a useful tool in comparing the efficiency and economics of various flat-plate solar collectors. Since collectors used in domestic hot water (DHW) systems typically operate in the intermediate temperature range (1200F-1600F), this is the rating provided for comparisons. It must be stressed that these comparisons are only a guide and should not be considered as a rank ordering of collectors. Such considerations as component sizing and proper installation procedures are equally important in determining a system's overall efficiency.
