Leave The Dishes In The Sink: Adventures Of An Activist In Conservative Utah, Alison Comish Thorne Jan 2002

Leave The Dishes In The Sink: Adventures Of An Activist In Conservative Utah, Alison Comish Thorne

All USU Press Publications

Alison Thorne provides a small-town Utah perspective on the progressive social movements that in the mid to late twentieth century dramatically affected American society. A born activist, Thorne has fought for women's rights, educational reform in public schools and universities, the environment, peace, and the war on poverty. Her efforts have been all the more challenging because of the conservative social and cultural environment in which she has undertaken them. Yet, Thorne, who has deep personal and familial roots in the politically conservative and predominantly Mormon culture of Utah and much of the West, has worked well with people with …

Cost Of Community Services In Sanpete County, Utah For Fy 1999-2000, E. Bruce Godfrey, Jeff Sanders

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This study is similar to other cost of government services studies that have been conducted in the United States and represents the second study done in Utah. But the results are different from previous studies in two important ways. First, the estimated payment of taxes by the agricultural/rural sector was generally not greater than the estimated services received for the units of government in Sanpete County, Utah, that were studied. Secondly, a recreational home sector was identified with subsequent estimation of revenues paid and government services obtained by this sector. Separation of this sector from the ruraVagricultural sector had a …

Recent Applications Of Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry To Environmental Measurements, Michael A. Janusa

Faculty Publications

Atomic absorption spectroscopy is very useful for the determination of a large number of elements, especially at trace levels. It is a widely used technique for analysis of a wide variety of sample matrices including biota, soils, and water. Atomic absorption spectroscopy is a very reputable technique that is inexpensive and delivers accurate results even in a complex matrix. This review focuses on the applications of flame atomic absorption spectroscopy to environmental measurements, and is mainly based on papers published from 1999–2002.

The Contextual Approach In Health Research: Two Empirical Studies, Anita Kothari Jan 2002

The Contextual Approach In Health Research: Two Empirical Studies, Anita Kothari

Health Studies Publications

Researchers are being encouraged to consider contextual influences on health-related outcomes. To support this perspective, two context-sensitive studies were conducted. The first study explored the utilization of a research report by Ontario public health units, and examined whether utilization differed by involvement in the research process. Research utilization was conceptualized as a three stage process (reading, information processing and application). Using a case study design, results from three "involved" public health units and three "uninvolved" units demonstrated that inclusion in the research process led to a greater understanding of the analysis and increased the value associated with the report. Involvement …

Substance Abuse Among Urban Aboriginals, Kahá:Wi J. Jacobs, Kathryn J. Gill

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

This paper reports findings of a study of mental health among urban Aboriginal peoples. Both qualitative and quantitative techniques were used to explore the relationship between substance abuse and physical/sexual abuse in a sample of Aboriginal peoples living in an urban community. Open-ended interviews were conducted in a sample of 30 Aboriginals that included Aboriginal social service providers (from health, legal and family services). Forty percent of the sample had been abused and many experienced social, psychological and emotional prob- lems associated with abusive experiences. Content analysis of the interviews revealed common themes in violence discourse including loss of identity …

“Give Up All And Follow Your Lord”: Testimony And Exhortation In Early Mormon Women's Letters, 1831–1839, Janiece Johnson Jan 2002

“Give Up All And Follow Your Lord”: Testimony And Exhortation In Early Mormon Women's Letters, 1831–1839, Janiece Johnson

BYU Studies

Women composed a significant portion of the early converts who would follow Joseph Smith over hundreds of miles and through the fires of persecution. Lucy Mack Smith, Rebecca Williams, Phebe Peck, and Melissa Dodge represent well the dedication and testimony of such early Latter-day Saint women. Despite separation from loved ones and the dangers and difficulties they would face as Church members, religion was the guiding factor in their lives. These women testified of the value of their experiences and exhorted others to "give up all and follow your Lord" regardless of the trials that were required of them.

Abigail Scott Duniway, Debra Shein Jan 2002

Abigail Scott Duniway, Debra Shein

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

In 1895, as she launched a new journal dedicated to bringing equal rights to all the women of America, Abigail Scott Duniway had already been a key figure in the national woman’s movement for over two decades. And during those years, dramatic changes had been taking place. As she wrote, “though ‘Liberty for all the inhabitants of the land’ has not yet been secured, we have made much permanent progress, and now nobody doubts our ultimate success” (“Salutatory” PE 16 Aug. 1895). At the beginning of Duniway’s career, women’s rights were severely restricted. With few exceptions, marriage brought an end …

Middle Level Teachers’ Perceptions Of Interdisciplinary Teaching, Susan R. Parker

Graduate Research Papers

This study explored the perceptions of Iowa middle school teachers who were members of interdisciplinary teaching teams regarding interdisciplinary teaching and the materials used. Twenty-four teachers at five different middle level schools in four different school districts were interviewed. They were asked about their current practices with interdisciplinary teaching, which were found to vary widely, but with most teams writing their own materials for interdisciplinary use. They were also asked about factors which facilitated their use of interdisciplinary teaching, barriers to their use of interdisciplinary teaching, and benefits they associated with interdisciplinary teaching. Time was the most often mentioned facilitating …
