Rhetorical Traction: Definitions And Institutional Arguments In Judicial Opinions About Wilderness Access, Steven J. Schwarze Jan 2002

Rhetorical Traction: Definitions And Institutional Arguments In Judicial Opinions About Wilderness Access, Steven J. Schwarze

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Almost every spring for the past eight years, I made a phone call to Maryland in order to get into Minnesota. An office in Maryland houses the reservation system for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, a one-million acre preserve in the northeastern tip of Minnesota that is the most visited unit of the National Wilderness Preservation System. This office acts as a medium of and barrier to my access to the Wilderness; it issues permits to groups of people wishing to enter the Boundary Waters, and it limits the number of parties that may enter at a given point …

Intimate Hierarchies And Qur'anic Saliva (Tëfli): Textuality In A Senegalese Ethnomedical Encounter, Sabina Perrino Jan 2002

Intimate Hierarchies And Qur'anic Saliva (Tëfli): Textuality In A Senegalese Ethnomedical Encounter, Sabina Perrino

Anthropology Faculty Scholarship

This article examines the multimodal textuality of a videotaped ethnomedical

encounter between a Senegalese healer and his patient and considers these

findings in light of metadiscourses on healing that were collected in interviews.

The article demonstrates how a cultural figure of the healing process

is precipitated out of patterns of co-occurrence (or "textures") of linguistic,

paralinguistic, and nonlinguistic semiotic devices and suggests that this

approach is well equipped to illuminate ethnomedical practice in Senegal and

elsewhere.

Frye Remains The Standard For Determining The Admissibility Of Expert Testimony In Pennsylvania Courts: Blum V. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Kristie Kline

Duquesne Law Review

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court held that expert testimony, in accordance with the Frye rule, must be generally accepted in the relevant scientific field to be considered as evidence, and that the federal practice of including expert testimony under more relaxed principals would not be followed in Pennsylvania courts.

An Investigation Of Preservice Elementary Teachers' Thinking About Science, William W. Cobern, Cathleen C. Loving Jan 2002

An Investigation Of Preservice Elementary Teachers' Thinking About Science, William W. Cobern, Cathleen C. Loving

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

It is not common to find media reports on the failures of science education; nor uncommon to hear prestigious scientists publicly lament the rise of anti-science attitudes. Given the position elementary teachers have in influencing children, anti-science sentiment amongst them would be a significant concern. Hence, this article reports an investigation where preservice elementary teachers responded to the Thinking about Science survey instrument. This newly developed instrument addresses the broad relationship of science to nine important areas of society and culture and is intended to reveal the extent of views being consistent with or disagreeing with a commonly held worldview …

Culturally Important Issues And Science: A Gender And Science-Interest Investigation, William W. Cobern, Cathleen C. Loving

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

Elementary science methods students nearing completion of their preservice teacher preparation are an important source for gauging views about science and its relation to culture. This research investigates gender and science interest as correlates of the valuation of science vis-à-vis nine culturally important categories as measured by the Thinking About Science Survey. Over one thousand male and female students at a large midwestern university took part in this study.

The Role Of Suggestions And Personality Characteristics In Producing Illness Reports And Desires For Suing The Responsible Party, Marc A. Lindberg Ph.D.

Psychology Faculty Research

For this project, 92 students entered an abandoned theater room in an old basement of the university where sand was scattered throughout. The purpose of the study was to experimentally demonstrate that psychological suggestions could produce illness reports and to explore who is most likely to say that they would sue for personal damages. The students filled out the Trait-State Anger Scale and two subscales, Anger Temperament and Anger Reaction as well as the Costello-Corey Anxiety Scale, the Hardiness Inventory, the Pennebaker Inventory of Limbic Languidness, and, embedded in the Hardiness Inventory, measures of current illness as a result of …

This paper will focus primarily on (1) the exploration of Asian international students' openness to United States counseling services offered on college campuses, (2) the counselor characteristic preferences of Asian international students, and ultimately …

Cattle Cycles, Expectations, And The Age Distribution Of Capital, David Aadland Jan 2002

Cattle Cycles, Expectations, And The Age Distribution Of Capital, David Aadland

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This paper builds a dynamic forward-looking model describing the approximate ten-year cattle cycle. The theoretical model improves on existing models by (1) allowing cow-calf operators to make investment decisions on both the cow and calf margins, (2) formally recognizing the age distribution of the capital stock, and (3) considering a mixed scheme of rational and naive expectations. The model.is then calibrated and used to simulate artificial data that endogenously generates ten-year cycles in the total stock of cattle.

Leave The Dishes In The Sink: Adventures Of An Activist In Conservative Utah, Alison Comish Thorne Jan 2002

Leave The Dishes In The Sink: Adventures Of An Activist In Conservative Utah, Alison Comish Thorne

All USU Press Publications

Alison Thorne provides a small-town Utah perspective on the progressive social movements that in the mid to late twentieth century dramatically affected American society. A born activist, Thorne has fought for women's rights, educational reform in public schools and universities, the environment, peace, and the war on poverty. Her efforts have been all the more challenging because of the conservative social and cultural environment in which she has undertaken them. Yet, Thorne, who has deep personal and familial roots in the politically conservative and predominantly Mormon culture of Utah and much of the West, has worked well with people with …
