Comparative Life Table Statistics Of Exochomus Flaviventris Reared On The Cassava Mealybug, Phenacoccus Manihoti, Fed On Four Host Plants, B. P. Le Rü, A. Mitsipa

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The demographic statistics of the ladybird Exochomus flaviventris Mader (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) were investigated under laboratory conditions on the cassava mealybug, Phenacoccus manihoti Matile-Ferrero (Homoptera: Pseudococcidae), reared on four host plants with different levels of antibiotic resistance to the mealybug: two cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz, Euphorbiaceae) varieties, Incoza and Zanaga, Faux-Caoutchouc (FC) (hybrid of M. esculenta x M. glaziovii Muel. Arg.) and water weed (Talinum triangulare Jack, Portulacacae). Preimaginal mortality, mean oviposition time and total fecundity of female ladybirds were strongly affected by the host plant even though there was no linkage with antibiotic resistance. The net reproduction rates R o …

Density Effects Of The Banana Weevil, Cosmopolites Sordidus (Germar), On Its Oviposition Performance And Egg And Larval Survivorship, Clifford S. Gold, Godfrey H. Kagezi, Pontiano Nemeye, Philip E. Ragama Jan 2002

Density Effects Of The Banana Weevil, Cosmopolites Sordidus (Germar), On Its Oviposition Performance And Egg And Larval Survivorship, Clifford S. Gold, Godfrey H. Kagezi, Pontiano Nemeye, Philip E. Ragama

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The influence of banana weevil, Cosmopolites sordidus (Germar)(Coleoptera: Curculionidae), population density on oviposition rates and larval survivorship was studied in the laboratory at the Kawanda Agricultural Research Institute in Uganda. This study was undertaken to elucidate the relationship between density-dependent factors and rates of banana weevil increase in the field. Oviposition substrates (corm pieces) were offered to a range of densities of weevils maintained in buckets. Mean oviposition rates per female at densities of 10, 20 and 40 females per bucket were 29, 37 and 53%, respectively, lower than that at a density of 5 females. Nevertheless, total oviposition for …

Best Available Treatment Technologies Applied To Groundwater Circulation Wells, Andrew Curtis Elmore, Thomas Graff Jan 2002

Best Available Treatment Technologies Applied To Groundwater Circulation Wells, Andrew Curtis Elmore, Thomas Graff

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Groundwater circulation wells (GCWs) are a quasi-in-situ method for remediating groundwater in areas where remediation techniques that limit the water available for municipal, domestic, industrial, or agricultural purposes are inappropriate. The inherently resource-conservative nature of groundwater circulation wells is also philosophically appealing in today's culture, which is supportive of green technologies. Groundwater circulation wells involve the circulation of groundwater through a dual screen well, with treatment occurring between the screens. The wells are specifically designed so that one well screen draws in groundwater and the second returns the groundwater after it has been treated within the well. Historically, the treatment …

Arsenic Trioxide Has Additive Cytotoxic Effects On Mcf-7 Breast Cancer Cell Line With Taxanes, Canfeza Sezgi̇n, Ulus Ali̇ Şanli, Rüçhan Uslu, Erdem Göker

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer in women and an important cause of both morbidity and mortality. Although long-term disease-free survival is offered to women with early stage disease by current treatment modality, some, 30-40% of patients will have metastatic disease. Treatment of patients with metastatic disease is a great challenge for oncologists. Therefore, new drugs and therapeutic options for women with metastatic breast cancer are urgently required. Arsenical compounds have cytotoxic effects on several cancer cell lines including promyelocytic leukemia, esophageal carcinoma, megakaryocytic leukemia, and malignant lymphocytic cell lines. In addition, recent studies showed that arsenic trioxide (As_2O_3) …

Clinical Evaluation Of The Fastplaquetb For The Rapid Diagnosis Of Pulmonary Tuberculosis, Cengi̇z Çavuşoğlu, Sevi̇nç Güneri̇, Mutay Suntur, Altinay Bi̇lgi̇ç

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The reliability of the FASTPlaqueTB (FPTB) test (Biotec Ltd.) for the rapid diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis was evaluated and its diagnostic performance was compared with the Amplified Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Direct (MTD) test (Gen-Probe) by testing 80 sputum samples obtained from 77 patients. The results were compared to those of mycobacterial culture, smear and clinical course. After a chart review 14 culture-negative patients who had been on antituberculosis therapy before the study began were excluded from the final analysis. Of the remaining 63 patients, 33 were considered to have tuberculosis; 29 of them were both smear and culture positive, for whom …

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Objective: To describe the long-term outcomes of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) and to study clinicopathological features at presentation, morphological subtypesand remission rates.
Methods: Demographic information, response to therapy and survival of patients (>14 years of age) admitted between January 1988 to August 1996 with acute myeloid leukaemia was retrieved and analysed.
Results: Seventy-four patients were admitted with a diagnosis of AML during the study period. There were 43 males and 31 females. Age ranged between 15 and 70 years with a mean age of 38 years. The most common presenting feature was fever (67.5%) and the …

Agency Rules With The Force Of Law: The Original Convention, Thomas W. Merrill, Kathryn Tongue Watts Jan 2002

Agency Rules With The Force Of Law: The Original Convention, Thomas W. Merrill, Kathryn Tongue Watts

Faculty Scholarship

The Supreme Court recently held in United States v. Mead Corp. that agency interpretations should receive Chevron deference only when Congress has delegated power to the agency to make rules with the force of law and the agency has rendered its interpretation in the exercise of that power The first step of this inquiry is difficult to apply to interpretations adopted through rulemaking, because often rulemaking grants authorize the agency to make "such rules and regulations as are necessary to carry out the provisions of this chapter" or words to that effect, without specifying whether "rules and regulations" encompasses rules …

"When Smoke Gets In Your Eyes": Myth And Reality About The Synthesis Of Private Counsel And Public Client, John C. Coffee Jr. Jan 2002

"When Smoke Gets In Your Eyes": Myth And Reality About The Synthesis Of Private Counsel And Public Client, John C. Coffee Jr.

A recurring fallacy in any debate over legal ethics or public policy is to assume that the particular problem under examination is unique and unprecedented. Expand one's field of vision, and precedents and analogs quickly turn up. This rule applies with special force to the debate over retention by state attorneys general of private counsel to represent them on a contingent fee basis in the recent litigation against the tobacco industry. Because this litigation produced a highly successful outcome, while most private litigation against the tobacco industry has not, some are led to the conclusion that this combination of private …

The Rise And Fall Of Article 2, Robert E. Scott Jan 2002

The Rise And Fall Of Article 2, Robert E. Scott

Faculty Scholarship

In August 13,2001 the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws voted eighty-nine to fifty-three to reject the Amendments to Article 2 of the Uniform Commercial Code that had just been approved in May by the American Law Institute. The vote followed a last minute effort by the Article 2 drafting committee to amend the scope provisions of Article 2 in response to continuing criticism from representatives of the software and information industries. Several months later, at the request of the NCCUSL leadership, amended Article 2 with its revised scope provision was withdrawn from the agenda of the ALI …

100 Million Unnecessary Returns: A Fresh Start For The U.S. Tax System, Michael J. Graetz

Faculty Scholarship

We are now in a quiet interlude awaiting the next serious political debate over the nation's tax system. No fundamental tax policy concerns were at stake in the 2002 disputes over economic stimulus or the political huffing and puffing about postponing or accelerating the income tax rate cuts of the 2001 Act. Those arguments were concerned principally with positioning Democratic and Republican candidates for the 2002 congressional election, not tax policy.

But the coming decade, with its paint-by-numbers phase-ins and phaseouts of 2001 Act tax changes, the tax cuts waiting to spring into effect, and the sunset of the entire …

Lawyers And The Practice Of Workplace Equity, Susan Sturm Jan 2002

Lawyers And The Practice Of Workplace Equity, Susan Sturm

Faculty Scholarship

Lawyers involved in the pursuit of workplace equity are difficult to pigeon-hole. Of course, the practice of many employment lawyers conforms to conventional understandings of lawyers' roles. These lawyers litigate cases on behalf of management or employees, advise clients about their legal rights and obligations, and define their mission as avoiding liability or winning battles in court. But innovators have crafted interesting and dynamic roles that transcend the traditional paradigm. These innovators connect law, as it is traditionally understood, to the resolution of the underlying problems that create and maintain workplace inequity. Civil rights lawyers working in both public and private …

Youngstown: Pages From The Book Of Disquietude, Philip Chase Bobbitt

The Youngstown holding is widely admired. One reads with pride those passages in which the Supreme Court denies to a president with whom they are in considerable political sympathy the power to enlarge executive authority by militarizing the homeland. And yet one wonders, as we confront in the 21st century a lethal foreign enemy who has demonstrated the ability to infiltrate and assault the domestic environment, precisely what restraints ought to govern a presidential response to that enemy.
