Biological Implications Of The Weibull And Gompertz Models Of Aging, Robert Ricklefs, Alex Scheuerlein Feb 2002

Biological Implications Of The Weibull And Gompertz Models Of Aging, Robert Ricklefs, Alex Scheuerlein

Biology Department Faculty Works

Gompertz and Weibull functions imply contrasting biological causes of demographic aging. The terms describing increasing mortality with age are multiplicative and additive, respectively, which could result from an increase in the vulnerability of individuals to extrinsic causes in the Gompertz model and the predominance of intrinsic causes at older ages in the Weibull model. Experiments that manipulate extrinsic mortality can distinguish these biological models. To facilitate analyses of experimental data, we defined a single index for the rate of aging (ω) for the Weibull and Gompertz functions. Each function described the increase in aging-related mortality in simulated ages at death …

Elders, Values, And Peppermint Candies, Sarah A. Klein, Andrea C. Bostrom Feb 2002

Elders, Values, And Peppermint Candies, Sarah A. Klein, Andrea C. Bostrom

Peer Reviewed Articles

The demographics of the population of the United States are inexorably changing: The baby boomers, who have defined much of the culture of the past half century, will continue to do so over the next 50 years. Just as the population is aging, so are the members of the nursing profession. Working with elders as our patients and as our peers is a reasonable expectation. Encouraging younger nurses to embrace working with elders is a challenge. Learning about how we have come to value aging and our elders is one way to engage the change in the work that nurses …

Response Time Is More Important Than Walking Speed For The Ability Of Older Adults To Avoid A Fall After A Trip, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert, M. J. Pavol, M. D. Grabiner Feb 2002

Response Time Is More Important Than Walking Speed For The Ability Of Older Adults To Avoid A Fall After A Trip, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert, M. J. Pavol, M. D. Grabiner

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

We previously reported that the probability of an older adult recovering from a forward trip and using a “lowering” strategy increases with decreased walking velocity and faster response time. To determine the within-subject interaction of these variables we asked three questions: (1) Is the body orientation at the time that the recovery foot is lowered to the ground (“tilt angle”) critical for successful recovery? (2) Can a simple inverted pendulum model, using subject-specific walking velocity and response time as input variables, predict this body orientation, and thus success of recovery? (3) Is slower walking velocity or faster response time more …

Comparison Of Gait Patterns Between Young And Elderly Women: An Examination Of Coordination, Jennifer E. Byrne, Nikolaos Stergiou, Daniel Blanke, Jeremy J. Houser, Max J. Kurz, Patricia A. Hageman Feb 2002

Comparison Of Gait Patterns Between Young And Elderly Women: An Examination Of Coordination, Jennifer E. Byrne, Nikolaos Stergiou, Daniel Blanke, Jeremy J. Houser, Max J. Kurz, Patricia A. Hageman

Journal Articles

This study investigated intralimb coordination during walking in Young and Elderly women using the theoretical model of dynamical systems. Twenty females, ten Young (M age = 24.6 yrs, SD = 3.2 yrs), and ten Elderly (M age = 73.7 yrs, SD = 4.9 yrs), were videotaped during free speed gait and gait perturbed by an ankle weight. Two parameters, one describing the phasing relationship between segments (mean absolute relative phase) and the other the variability of this relationship (deviation in phase), were calculated from the kinematics. Two-way ANOVA (age and weight) with repeated measures on weight indicated that during the …

Contradictions Of Interaction For Wives Of Elderly Husbands With Adult Dementia, Leslie A. Baxter, Dawn O. Braithwaite, Tamara D. Golish, Loreen N. Olson Feb 2002

Contradictions Of Interaction For Wives Of Elderly Husbands With Adult Dementia, Leslie A. Baxter, Dawn O. Braithwaite, Tamara D. Golish, Loreen N. Olson

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

The researchers used a dialectical framework to examine interviews with wives whose elderly husbands experienced adult dementia from Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders (ADRD), centering on how wives coped communicatively with their husbands’ illness. These “married widows” experienced a primary contradiction between their husbands’ physical presence and cognitive/emotional absence. Interwoven with the presence-absence contradiction were three additional contradictions: certainty-uncertainty, openness-closedness, and past-present. Results describe the ways these wives communicatively negotiated the web of contradictions as they interacted in the present with husbands they once knew. Applications for practitioners and caregivers working with ADRD patients and their wives, including formal and …

Development Of An Aural Rehabilitation Cd-Rom, Sierra Macdonald Jan 2002

Development Of An Aural Rehabilitation Cd-Rom, Sierra Macdonald

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A need has been established for aural rehabilitation (AR) sessions throughout the years. The literature reviewed here demonstrates that new hearing aid users do benefit from a structured follow-up AR program. However, this need is often not met for a variety of patient and audiologist related factors. Therefore, an AR program that could be viewed at home has been suggested. I have developed a prototype for a CD-ROM based aural rehabilitation (AR) program. Included in the program are communication and speechreading strategies, which are the most prevalent materials in AR. The instructional and interaction portions of the prototype were created …

Vcu News (2002-01-16)

VCU News, 2001-2002

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.
