Grandparent Care In The Latino/Hispanic Population, Jan Mutchler, Seungah Lee, Lindsey A. Baker

Gerontology Institute Publications

The purpose of this report is to provide information on Latino grandparent caregivers in the United States. Many grandparents are responsible for grandchildren who live with them in the same household. The 1996 Welfare Reform Act mandates that statistics be collected on grandparents who serve as caregivers to a grandchild. In response to this requirement, questions were developed for the 2000 Census of Population asking each adult about care for grandchildren living in the same household. We use the census information to identify grandparents who are caring for grandchildren in two different types of households: skipped-generation households, in which a …

The Place Of Dietary Practices In The Lives Of Older Women, Lisa Marie Curch Jan 2002

The Place Of Dietary Practices In The Lives Of Older Women, Lisa Marie Curch

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Studies have supported the benefits of positive dietary behaviors in preventing or reducing morbidity and extending longevity, as well as the psychosocial function of dietary practices for quality of life. Research is needed though on the dietary behaviors of elders in general and older women in particular, for whom gender affects lifelong dietary patterns. Health behavior theory has typically focused on psychological factors, to the neglect of sociocultural processes. This investigation utilized a life course perspective, enhanced by social interactionist elements, to address aspects of development and change in behavior neglected by health behavior theories, such as temporal dimensions and …

“Married Widowhood”: Maintaining Couplehood When One Spouse Is Living In A Nursing Home, Dawn O. Braithwaite

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

When a marital partner moves to a nursing home, how do community-dwelling spouses, labeled “married widows,” adapt and cope with changes in the relationship and their own marital roles? The first goal of this study was to explore the role additions and deletions for community-based wives whose husbands moved to a nursing home. The second goal was to examine how these women discursively represent their own self-identity and the relationship they have with their husband who is living in a nursing home. Data were drawn from in-depth, face-to-face interviews with 21 wives whose husbands resided in a nursing home. A …

Life History Response Of Mediterranean Fruit Flies To Dietary Restriction, James R. Carey, Pablo Liedo, Lawrence G. Harshman, Ying Zhang, Hans-Georg Müller, Linda Partridge, Jane-Ling Wang

Lawrence G. Harshman Publications

The purpose of this study was to investigate medfly longevity and reproduction across a broad spectrum of diet restriction using a protocol similar to those applied in most rodent studies. Age-specific reproduction and age of death were monitored for 1,200 adult males and 1,200 females, each individually maintained on one of 12 diets from ad libitum to 30% of ad libitum. Diet was provided in a fixed volume of solution that was fully consumed each day, ensuring control of total nutrient consumption for every fly. Contrary to expectation and precedence, increased longevity was not observed at any level of …

Food Pulses Increase Longevity And Induce Cyclical Egg Production In Mediterranean Fruit Flies, James R. Carey, Pablo Liedo, Lawrence G. Harshman, X. Liu, Hans-Georg Müller, Linda Partridge, Jane-Ling Wang

1. Inasmuch as virtually all studies on mortality and reproduction in insects are conducted under conditions in which food availability is constant, little is known about the demographic response of insects to variable food environments. For example, it is not known if and to what extent the life expectancy of insects subjected to shortages of high-quality food will increase and/or whether this increase is associated with major decreases in lifetime reproduction.

2. Therefore cohorts of 100 individual female medflies were subjected to different sets of conditions of protein availability (interspersed with sugar-only diets) including ad libitum sugar-only (no protein), ad …

Delirium In The Hospitalized Elderly: Clinical Indicators Found In Medical Records, Diane M Elmore

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Delirium, which can be reversible and preventable, is one of the most significant complications affecting the hospitalized elderly today. The purpose of this descriptive retrospective chart review was to determine if medical records contain sufficient evidence to identify elderly patients who were at risk for developing delirium within 72 hours of hospital admission, and if accepted, evidence-based criteria were used to document the acute confusion. The chart's of 100 patients, at least 65 years of age, admitted to a rural hospital were reviewed retrospectively. The review indicated that there was sufficient evidence, based solely on the descriptors and clinical information, …

Putting The Cart Before The Horse: The Need To Re-Examine Damage Caps In California's Elder Abuse Act* Jan 2002

Putting The Cart Before The Horse: The Need To Re-Examine Damage Caps In California's Elder Abuse Act*

San Diego Law Review

This Comment addresses what has been and continues to be a very controversial area of the law-damage caps imposed on plaintiffs who bring medical malpractice claims against health care providers in California. Since 1975, the state has restricted these actions as a means of holding down liability insurance premiums and reducing litigation through a package of statutes called the Medical Injury Compensation Reform Act (MICRA). In 1991, the legislature extended these limitations to claims brought under the state's Elder Abuse Act while at the same time providing for enhanced remedies in such actions to encourage litigation. Today, upon showing clear …

An Exploratory Study Of The Effects Of A Training Program On The Ability To Prepare A Breakfast Meal By Clients With Mild Alzheimer's Disease, Alicia J. Curtin Jan 2002

An Exploratory Study Of The Effects Of A Training Program On The Ability To Prepare A Breakfast Meal By Clients With Mild Alzheimer's Disease, Alicia J. Curtin

Open Access Dissertations

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by the insidious onset of an array of cognitive deficits that progress over time and lead to changes in an individual's ability to even perform simple tasks, such as preparing meals. Recently, researchers have demonstrated that clients with mild AD have preserved procedural memory function despite significant cognitive deficits. Procedural memory is an automatic, unconscious process, requiring practice and repetition to activate the particular structures involved in learning tasks. Skills training is a strategy using repetition and practice to enhance the client's ability to perform a certain task. An exploratory design using direct observation and …

The Relations Between Spirituality, Religiosity And Reasons For Living In Older Adults., Andrea Kay Shreve-Neiger Jan 2002

The Relations Between Spirituality, Religiosity And Reasons For Living In Older Adults., Andrea Kay Shreve-Neiger

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The present study examined the relations between measures of religiosity and spirituality and reasons for living in older adults. Participants consisted of 69 community-dwelling older adults. Results revealed that number of reasons for living endorsed was related to degree of religiosity, and that spirituality, or the more covert idiographic aspect of faith, was related to survival and coping. Religiosity and spirituality were found to overlap in areas of prayer fulfillment and universality. In addition, the top ten reasons for living in this population were identified. The implications of the results for suicide assessment and prevention in older adults, and future …

Differences In Coping Behavior Based On Epistemic Style, Lance Evans Jan 2002

Differences In Coping Behavior Based On Epistemic Style, Lance Evans

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite evidence supporting epistemic style as an influential personality factor in a variety of behaviors, the relevance of epistemic style in coping behavior has yet to be explored. Using Royce's model of epistemic style (Royce & Powell, 1983) and Lazarus' relational model of coping (Lazarus, 1999), the purpose of this study was to investigate differences in coping behavior based on epistemic style. Participants were 90 first-year undergraduate students residing in three freshman residence halls of a mid-sized, state university located in the Mid-Western U.S. Coping behavior was assessed using the Ways of Coping Questionnaire (Folkman & Lazarus, 1988) and epistemic …

Suggestions Regarding Cross-Cultural Environment As Context For Aging And Human Development In Non-Western Cultures, Frank E. Eyetsemitan Jan 2002

Suggestions Regarding Cross-Cultural Environment As Context For Aging And Human Development In Non-Western Cultures, Frank E. Eyetsemitan

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

An individual's aging and human development always occur within a particular cultural context, but given the dominance of Western culture, the environment of non-Western societies is cross-cultural - it includes not only a non-Western dimension, but also Global and Western dimensions. The Western dimension is made up of those characteristics associated with Western societies, which are now found in non-Western societies, for example, Western education, healthcare services, and industrialization. The non-Western dimension, on the other hand, is made up of those attributes that are indigenous to the people, e.g., traditional healing. The Global dimension is characterized by standards that all …
