Background: Self-administered computer-assisted blood donor screening strategies may elicit more accurate responses and improve the screening process.

Methods: Randomized crossover trial comparing responses to questions on a computerized hand-held tool (HealthQuiz, or HQ), to responses on the standard written instrument (Donor Health Assessment Questionnaire, or DHAQ). Randomly selected donors at 133 blood donation clinics in the area of Hamilton, Canada participated from 1995 to 1996. Donors were randomized to complete either the HQ or the DHAQ first, followed by the other instrument. In addition to responses of ‘yes’ and ‘no’ on both questionnaires, the HQ provided a …

Effectiveness Of A Relaxation Technique To Decrease The Memory And Behavior Problems Of Alzheimer's Patients, Stella Maris Verna

This study explored the effects of instruction in a relaxation technique on patients diagnosed with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease (AD). The two-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design was implemented with 34 pairs of AD patients and caregivers in a group setting. It was hypothesized that treatment patients, compared with controls, would show (a) increased mental functioning, measured by their scores on the Annotated Mini-Mental State Examination (AMMSE) (Folstein, Folstein, & McHugh, 1975); and (b) decreased memory and behavior problems, measured by caregivers' scores on the memory and Behavior Problems Checklist (MBPC) (Zarit, Orr, & Zarit, 1985). Older adults are confronted with a variety of developmental and unexpected issues that can impair or strengthen their mental health. Affective and anxiety disorders, substance abuse, and suicide are some of the mental health issues when older adults experience difficulty with the aging process. With the aging of the baby boomers there is a concern for the liklihood of an increase in reported cases of adult and dependent abuse with Adult Protective Services (APS). This study examined what the social work implications were regarding clients who refuse APS interventions and what subsequent outcomes existed. Data was extracted from closed case files for the period of January 1, 2000 and January 31, 2001 in the high desert region of San Bernardino County.

This project was an assessment of elderly health care needs and access. Three urban San Bernardino communities in zip codes 92405, 92410, and 92411 were targeted. The assessment was structured according to King's theoretical construction of community as a multilevel interaction between personal, interpersonal and social systems. The components of the assessment included digital photographs, web-based internet assessments, key informant interviews, and community business visits.

The study investigated the relationship between San Bernardino County Department of Adult Protective Services (APS) client refusal of services and the outcome of their cases. A data extraction tool was used to collect demographic information about the APS clients and their perpetrators, types and number of contacts made by the APS worker, types of abuse, reasons for refusal, and outcomes from closed APS cases for the San Bernardino, Ontario, and Rancho Cucamonga regions.

Purpose: To review the origins and early development of quality of life measurements in the medical literature. Methods: A comprehensive literature review of Medline from 1966-1986 examining articles with quality of life as a subject heading. Studies were included if they were the original article describing a scales development or used scales developed in the social science literature. Results: The measurements have been derived from two separate sources: a transfer and expansion of medical appraisals for health status, and an application of sociometric and psychometric methods for populational assessment of happiness, well-being, and other affects.
