Key Health Issues Facing Latinas, Dharma E. Cortés, Helen Cajigas, Odilia Bermúdez
Key Health Issues Facing Latinas, Dharma E. Cortés, Helen Cajigas, Odilia Bermúdez
Gastón Institute Publications
Acknowledging the relationship that exists among health outcomes, socioeconomic factors, and access to health care is key to understanding the health status of Latinas in Massachusetts. For example, poverty disproportionately affects Latinos in Massachusetts, and they have the lowest rate of health insurance in the Commonwealth despite the fact that Massachusetts has one of the most inclusive and comprehensive public health insurance programs in the nation. This situation impacts access to regular health care for Latinos and affects their overall health status. This fact sheet provides information on the following health areas of particular concern to Latinas: maternal and child …

Transitions Along The Continuum Of Care: Elderly And Disabled Persons In New York, Lisa Sprague, Nora Super
National Health Policy Forum
This site visit examined transitions along the continuum of care for elderly and disabled persons in New York. The state offers its residents an extensive array of services, including nursing homes, home health care, personal care, and community-based services. New York spends more than any other state on its Medicaid program, which is reflected in a comprehensive benefit package, full-cost reimbursement of hospitals, high nursing home rates, and extensive coverage of personal care services. Site visitors were briefed on the history and development of long-term care in the state as well as the various care settings available. Panels discussed transitions …

Quality Of Life And Aging: Exploring The "Paradox Of Well-Being", Regula H. Robnett
Quality Of Life And Aging: Exploring The "Paradox Of Well-Being", Regula H. Robnett
Occupational Therapy Faculty Publications
During the past 50 years, quality of life is a construct that many researchers have studied. Occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants often claim to improve the quality of their clients' lives. Making note of references to quality of life in the occupational therapy literature, one could gather a list of hundreds of articles. However, in the occupational therapy context, the term quality of life rarely is defined. The words quality and life are easy enough to discern, but the meanings behind the words seem to vary with author. Sometimes, quality of life has been described in vague terms, such …

Community-Acquired Pneumonia In Older Veterans: Does The Pneumonia Prognosis Index Help?, Lona Mody, Rongjun Sun, Suzanne Bradley
Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications
OBJECTIVES: Mortality rates from pneumonia increase steadily with age. Recently, a disease severity model (the Pneumonia Prognosis Index (PPI)) has been developed to predict mortality from community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). DESIGN: Retrospective review of medical charts. SETTING: Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
PARTICIPANTS: All adults aged 60 and older admitted to a Veterans Affairs Medical Center with CAP between January 1 and December 31, 1998.
MEASUREMENTS: PPI was calculated using subjects' …

College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations
Academic nursing practice holds great promise for the future of the nursing discipline. The successful and intentional integration of the tripartite mission of research, education, and clinical practice can facilitate both the evolution of the science and implementation of evidence-based practice, while imbuing practitioners in the making with the world of the possible. Although many schools of nursing have been involved in some aspects of academic practice, the lack of common focus and direction has hampered concerted movement. The Penn Macy Initiative was conceived as a vehicle to help build and coalesce the critical mass needed to bridge this gap. …
