Crossing Methodological Boundaries: Assessing Visitor Motivations And Support For Management Actions At Yellowstone National Park Using Quantitative And Qualitative Research Approaches, William T. Borrie, Wayne A. Freimund, Mae A. Davenport, Robert E. Manning

Society and Conservation Faculty Publications

Winter use of Yellowstone National Park has given rise to a complex of management issues, including rapid growth in recreation demand, environmental impacts of snowmobiling, and a string of litigation against the National Park Service (NPS) designed to both protect park resources and maintain public access (Sacklin et al. 2000). The intertwined character of these problems suggests that none can be resolved independently of the other, that policy must be comprehensive in nature, and that many sources of knowledge may be required to effect their resolution.

It not only provides an accurate historic account of both industries, but clearly delineates the dependence of tourism on commercial air service as the primary source of transportation to Las Vegas; While the thesis's overarching theme focuses on commercial air travel and tourism, it also contains a set of subthemes, one of which highlights the symbiotic relationship of the commercial air travel industry with the Strip "mega-resorts," and the air …

Explaining Home Bias In Consumption: The Role Of Intermediate Input Trade, Russell Hillberry, David Hummels Jan 2001

Explaining Home Bias In Consumption: The Role Of Intermediate Input Trade, Russell Hillberry, David Hummels

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

We show that “home bias” in trade patterns will arise endogenously due to the co-location decisions of intermediate and final goods producers. Our model identifies four implications of home bias arising out of specialized industrial demands. Regions absorb different bundles of goods. Buyers and sellers of intermediate goods co-locate. Intermediate input trade is highly localized. The effect of spatial frictions on trade are magnified. These implications are examined and confirmed using a unique data source that matches the detailed subnational geography of shipments to the characteristics of the shipping establishments. Our results broaden the measurement and interpretation of home bias, …

On Castles And Commerce: Zoning Law And The Home Business Dilemma, Nicole Stelle Garnett Jan 2001

On Castles And Commerce: Zoning Law And The Home Business Dilemma, Nicole Stelle Garnett

Journal Articles

Most zoning laws severely restrict residents' ability to work from home. Some prohibit it outright. These regulations serve the ostensible purpose of protecting neighbors from externalities that might be generated by home businesses. But, home occupation restrictions also reflect in a particularly sharp way the central motivating ideology underlying all zoning laws - namely, that the good life requires the careful segregation of work and home. Today, home business regulations are being challenged by both planning theory and economic reality. At the same time that many in the academy and planning professions are calling into question zoning's pervasive segregation of …

Rhetoric And Somatics: Training The Body To Do The Work Of Law, Peter Goodrich Jan 2001

Rhetoric And Somatics: Training The Body To Do The Work Of Law, Peter Goodrich

Articles

The article explores the intersection of law, rhetoric, and corporeality, arguing that law is deeply embedded in the human body and its emotional and sensory experiences. It posits that legal dogmatics, while often seen as abstract, is shaped by the body's characteristics and movements, which serve as a substrate for legal logic. The analysis centers on Abraham Fraunce and his contemporaries, who critique the strict legality by emphasizing rhetoric, decorum, and the form of life that rhetoric implies. This critique challenges the notion of law as a detached, abstract system by highlighting its corporeal and emotional dimensions.

Trouble Preserving Paradise?, Nicole Stelle Garnett Jan 2001

Trouble Preserving Paradise?, Nicole Stelle Garnett

Journal Articles

Election day 2000 was not a good day for proponents of suburban growth controls. The overwhelming initial support for initiatives that proposed state-wide growth management plans in Colorado and Arizona withered in the face of vigorous opposition campaigns. And, pro-planning forces in Oregon woke up on Wednesday morning to learn that voters had approved a little-noticed initiative amending the state constitution to require compensation for partial takings - that is, for any reduction in the fair market value of property resulting from government regulation - thus throwing into question the future of the State's widely touted model controlled-growth scheme.

These …

The Road From Welfare To Work: Informal Transportation And The Urban Poor, Nicole Stelle Garnett Jan 2001

The Road From Welfare To Work: Informal Transportation And The Urban Poor, Nicole Stelle Garnett

Journal Articles

Individuals struggling to move from welfare to work face numerous obstacles. This Article addresses one of those obstacles: lack of transportation. Without reliable transportation, many welfare recipients are unable to find and maintain jobs located out of the reach of traditional forms of public transportation. Professor Garnett argues that lawmakers should remove restrictions on informal van or jitney services, allowing entrepreneurs to provide low-cost transportation to their communities. This reform would not only help people get to work, but it could also provide jobs for low-income people.

Evolving Tenure Rights And Agricultural Intensification In Southwestern Burkina Faso, Michael Kevane, Leslie C. Gray Jan 2001

Evolving Tenure Rights And Agricultural Intensification In Southwestern Burkina Faso, Michael Kevane, Leslie C. Gray

Economics

Popular and official representations of the environment in Burkina Faso present soils as fragile and potentially subject to catastrophic collapse in fertility. In the cotton growing zone of southwestern Burkina Faso, researchers and policy makers attribute changes in land cover and land quality to population growth. This paper presents evidence questioning the dominant "population-degradation narrative" as applied to Burkina. We find that farmers are intensifying their production systems. While population has led to land scarcity, farmers are responding to both the resulting uncertainty in land rights and reductions in soil quality by intensifying the production process. Investments are used both …

A Predictive Framework For The Effectiveness Of International Criminal Tribunals, James B. Griffin Jan 2001

A Predictive Framework For The Effectiveness Of International Criminal Tribunals, James B. Griffin

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

This Note examines international criminal tribunals and analyzes the factors that can govern the level of their effectiveness. The historical background in this area is essential, for one of the main points of the Note is that international criminal tribunals cannot be detached from the political circumstances that create them and enforce their verdicts if those verdicts are to be enforceable at all.

The Note begins with an analysis of the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg, and compares it to its contemporary counterpart, the International Military Tribunal at Tokyo. The Note then makes a similar analysis of the recent International …
