Cross-Cultural Field Experiences In Costa Rica: A Qualitative Study Of Teacher Change., Peggy A. Romeo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In order for teachers to be able to think and teach globally, they must be involved in cross-cultural experiences; experiences that lead to change. The purpose of the present study is to provide information that may be of value in determining if the experiences of a field course designed around a trip to Costa Rica generate professional and personal change in the teachers who participate in the course. Methods for data collection included (1) in-depth, open-ended interviews of the participants before and after the field course; (2) participant observation of the field trip; (3) evaluation of participant journals; and (4) …

Shake, Rattle And Roll: Hazard Modeling In Indonesia Using Gis., Jacqueline K. Snyder Jan 2001

Shake, Rattle And Roll: Hazard Modeling In Indonesia Using Gis., Jacqueline K. Snyder

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The islands of Indonesia are unique in that they are prone to more combined natural disasters caused by volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunami than most other countries. Indonesia is also one of the most densely populated areas in the world. As a result, Indonesia is highly vulnerable to large-scale natural disasters. The political structure, island setting and economic status of the country have prevented the creation and implementation of a comprehensive vulnerability hazard model. Such a model would be an invaluable tool in reducing both economic loss and human casualties arising from natural hazards because it would identify vulnerable areas and …

Cross-Border Shopping In Hungary: Causes And Effects, Gabor Michalko, Dallen J. Timothy Jan 2001

Cross-Border Shopping In Hungary: Causes And Effects, Gabor Michalko, Dallen J. Timothy

Visions in Leisure and Business

Shopping tourism in Eastern Europe has grown enormously since the 1970s, and the geopolitical changes that occurred in the late 1980s and early 90s had a major bearing on its development. Within the context of shopping tourism, this paper examines cross-border shopping trends in Hungary, which is one of the most prominent shopping destinations in the former communist bloc. After a description. of the phenomenon and its magnitude in Hungary, spatial patterns in the borderlands are considered and the probable impacts of Hungary's future admission into the European Union are explained.

Tourist Shopping Activities And Development Of Travel Sophistication, Russell K. Smith, Lorene S. Olson Jan 2001

Tourist Shopping Activities And Development Of Travel Sophistication, Russell K. Smith, Lorene S. Olson

Visions in Leisure and Business

An ethnographic research approach was used to investigate shopping and consumption behavior of international tourists. This research informed a model that positions a tourist's market-place activity as an evolving process that parallels and supports their advance in travel sophistication. The model illustrates that shopping and consumption may originate as a leisure-recreational pursuit for tourists but is transformed into a learning activity that facilitates their assimilation of a host culture. This, in turn, plays an important role in the tourist's development of travel self-efficacy, as well as their motivation for return trips.

The Case For The Electromagnetic Commons An Ecocultural Intervention In Australian Spectrum Management, Scott Smith Jan 2001

The Case For The Electromagnetic Commons An Ecocultural Intervention In Australian Spectrum Management, Scott Smith

Theses : Honours

In the globalised world of the electronic, information age, there is one resource that increasingly appears to play a pertinent role in the future of our communications systems. The electromagnetosphere is an ecological region that is largely unacknowledged outside of scientific circles: it is one of those naturally-occurring phenomena that we simply take for granted. But with developments in communications technology we have learnt to tap the energies of this natural phenomenon, and in tum have developed a complex system of management and regulation where a 'property-mimicking' regime of allocation and licensing is in place. There are movements however, to …

The Developing World In The New Millennium: International Finance, Development, And Beyond, Rurnu Sarkar Jan 2001

The Developing World In The New Millennium: International Finance, Development, And Beyond, Rurnu Sarkar

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

Former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers once commented that the end of the Cold War was the second most interesting story of the past two decades. According to him, the most compelling story during that time was the emergence of global capital markets.' This viewpoint heralds a subtle sea change that signals the beginning of a newly formed international consensus. Making a successful transition from being a "developing nation" to being an "emerging capital market" is now the most serious challenge facing the developing world today.

Trade relations and capital investments are now being rationalized in a new international economic order …

Evaluation Of The Implementation Of Hot Pour Sealants And Equipment For Crack Sealing In Indiana, David R. Ward Jan 2001

Evaluation Of The Implementation Of Hot Pour Sealants And Equipment For Crack Sealing In Indiana, David R. Ward

JTRP Technical Reports

This study was initiated as an implementation effort that would monitor, assist with and report on a new maintenance activity involving the trial use of hot pour crack sealant. Work associated with this new activity was qualitatively assessed over a period of several years. INDOT began by purchasing six oil-jacketed melters that were distributed to various sub-districts. Previous INDOT research indicated using hot pour sealant might save on labor expense because it lasted significantly longer than the current emulsion. Random observations were made of various sub-district crews using hot pour sealant and the results were reported to appropriate personnel. Inspections …
