Environmental Controls On Species Composition Along A (Maquis) Shrubland To Forest Gradient On Ultramafics At Mont Do, New Caledonia, L.S. Rigg, N.J. Enright, T. Jaffre

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

The landscape-scale pattern of distribution of maquis, maquis with emergent conifers (Arauacaria laubenfelsii), and rain forest, on ultramafic substrate at Mont Do, New Caledonia, is investigated in relation to soil and plant chemistry, light and moisture. The structure and composition of these vegetation types reflects the impacts of disturbance on the one hand, and of physiological stresses on the other. Disturbance by fire is important in determining the presence and abundance of maquis and rain forest at the landscape level and is discussed in detail by Perry et al. elsewhere in this issue. The impacts of light environments, water availability …

Policy Driven Security Architectures For Ebusiness, Marcus Cutts

Theses

The dawning of the twenty-first century and genesis of a new millennium has been extremely kind to technological advance. Industries and society alike have reaped the extreme benefits of technology at its finest. Technological progress has also proven to be extraordinarily beneficial to businesses and their bottom lines when properly employed. The need for automated business logic and functionality has spawned numerous concepts and efforts to capitalize on advanced business requirements. Probably the most popular and revolutionary to date of all initiatives is the advent of eBusiness. A direct descendant of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), eBusiness has and continues to …

On The Grounds Of Globalization: A Topography For Feminist Political Engagement, Cindi Katz Jan 2001

On The Grounds Of Globalization: A Topography For Feminist Political Engagement, Cindi Katz

Publications and Research

Globalization is nothing new. Global trade has been going on for millennia—though what constitutes the "globe" has expanded dramatically in that time. And trade is nothing if not cultural exchange, the narrow distinctions between the economic and the cultural having long been rendered obsolete. Moreover, our forbears, like us, were great "miscegenators." If here I gloss the racialized and gendered violence often associated with miscegenation, I do so strategically to note that all recourse to purity, indigeneity, or aboriginality—however useful strategically—should be subject to at least as much scrutiny as the easy romance with hybridity (see Mitchell 1997). Globalization has …

Attribute Agenda-Setting In An Open Primary: An Examination Of Press Coverage And Political Ad Effects, Scott Hobbs Jan 2001

Attribute Agenda-Setting In An Open Primary: An Examination Of Press Coverage And Political Ad Effects, Scott Hobbs

LSU Master's Theses

Creating a favorable candidate image is one of the more difficult tasks a political consultant faces. Besides researching which issues their client will address, the consultant must analyze what attributes voters find most appealing in a candidate. Then, through a complex process, a candidate image is finally packaged and presented to the public. This thesis looks at the end result of the packaging process for a Mayoral candidate in East Baton Rouge parish. By examining the press coverage and campaign ads in a local election in a mid-size city, this study expands on previous second level agenda-setting research. Literature in …

"Encourager Le Commerce Et Répandre Les LumiʹEre" : The Press, The Provinces And The Origins Of The Revolution In France: 1750-1789, Stephen Auerbach

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines the political, intellectual, and cultural significance of France's provincial newspaper press, called affiches, published between 1750-1789. Combining the histories of the press, provincial life, and the public sphere, this dissertation explores the ways in which the affiches became an indispensable part of local economic, cultural, and intellectual life while at the same time articulated a world view that was antithetical to the tenets of monarchical absolutism. The first part of the dissertation focuses on the origins, form and contents of the provincial press. Faced with the twin obstacles of laws governing censorship and privilege, provincial newspapers eschewed …

Improving And Enhancing The Afterschool Program At Brookside School, William E. Kayal Jan 2001

Improving And Enhancing The Afterschool Program At Brookside School, William E. Kayal

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This report explains the progress of a program for participants who benefited more than the typical nonparticipants in an afterschool extended-day program. Schubert (1997) stated, "To develop school experience that genuinely engage students and teachers in citizenship, gives meaning and direction to their lives" (p. 82). Results of the study showed that the participants' development was a complex process about the natural reciprocity between self and others with an emphasis on building relationships and providing programs to support student needs. The staff members have always demonstrated through modeling that students are the school's first priority.

Students commented that staff interest …
