Improvement Of Reconciliation For Quantum Key Distribution, Keath Chen Jan 2000

Improvement Of Reconciliation For Quantum Key Distribution, Keath Chen

Theses

Quantum Key Distribution is meant to be an ultimate computer security system that will not need upgrade/overhaul from time to time. QKD allows the generation of long key length on demand. QKD, coupled with the unconditional secure "one-time pad" encryption system, will be unbreakable for eavesdropper with infinite resources. Numerous experimental QKD prototypes have demonstrated that QKD is likely to be a reality before quantum computer. One of the steps in a Quantum Key Distribution protocol is to remove the transmission errors from quantum communication, which typically has a high error rate (one percent or higher). An interactive error control …

An Assessment Of On-Line Package Customization For Sheet Size Products Packaged In Paperboard Envelopes, Kevin Kennedy

Theses

This study evaluates the on-line printing of paperboard envelopes as a means of supporting the need to provide customized packaging. Market forces and new business models are contributing to the need for customized packaging and rapid response to orders. Large retailers are demanding unique packaging presentations and global marketing requires localized packaging for different regions of the world. A business environment ofjust-intime delivery and minimal inventory levels demand flexibility to react to unpredictable product mix and volumes. These conditions require customized packaging within short cycle times. The traditional carton printing process using offset lithography does not respond quickly enough to …

Theses

Home networking will be more of a necessity in the future than it is today. The homes of the future will make our lives easier in many ways. As microprocessors become less expensive and require less power they will be implanted into many of the common household items used everyday. Appliances and components will evolve into smart devices that communicate with each other. Connecting these devices will become more important as devices incorporate new technologies. It will be necessary to build a network that can handle the needs of this type of computing environment. The home networks of the future …

The Evolution Of Internet Interconnections, Sean Butler Jan 2000

The Evolution Of Internet Interconnections, Sean Butler

Theses

In 1995, the NSF officially shut down the NSFNet backbone, thereby ending the nascent Internets early architecture as a single backbone network. Today, the Internet is a group of loosely interconnected networks run by many diverse companies. These interconnections are in no way controlled by any industry or government agency, and are therefore held together only by the market demands of the Internet community. Although the FCC has traditionally maintained a stance of "unregulation" of all information and computer networks, they have increasingly show interest in ensuring the rapid deployment of Internet access. In addition, as more and more critical …

Traditional Classroom Versus Distance Learning Approaches In Providing Eduactaion For Students At The College Of Applied Science And Technology At Rit, Ryan Griske

Theses

This thesis discusses the current controversial issue of traditional classroom vs. distance learning approaches in higher education institutions using a case study in the College of Applied Science and Technology at RIT. The most important question addressed in the thesis is, "Are distance learning methods effective for addressing university-level learning goals?" (Kathleen Davey, 1999, p. 45). There are currently many disputes between educational researchers on this issue. The first four chapters cover details of the proposal stage as previously approved by the Thesis Committee. Chapter One briefly introduces this issue and several important terms used throughout the thesis (e.g., distance …

Nonlinear Ultrasound Image Modeling: Development Of A Complete End-To-End Model For Qualitative And Quantitative Analysis Of Medical Ultrasound, Kevin Ayer Jan 2000

Nonlinear Ultrasound Image Modeling: Development Of A Complete End-To-End Model For Qualitative And Quantitative Analysis Of Medical Ultrasound, Kevin Ayer

Theses

Finite amplitude sound propagation undergoes nonlinear distortion due to continuous path interaction with the propagation medium. This distortion tends to defocus the beam causing significant lateral and contrast resolution degradation. Fundamental understanding of this interaction requires development of computational models that accurately predict the nonlinear interaction - development of media-borne harmonics - as well as produce an ultrasound image - introduction of transducer effects, interface transitions, and innovative image processing to extract harmonics. Most computational models of ultrasound propagation assume axial symmetry for computational expediency. Two notable exceptions are the K-Z-K and NLP models. A new endto- end model, NUPROP, …

Characterization Of The Earth's Surface And Atmosphere For Multispectral And Hyperspectral Thermal Imagery, Erich Hernandez-Baquero Jan 2000

Characterization Of The Earth's Surface And Atmosphere For Multispectral And Hyperspectral Thermal Imagery, Erich Hernandez-Baquero

Theses

The goal of this research was to develop a new approach to solve the inverse problem of thermal remote sensing of the Earth. This problem falls under a large class of inverse problems that are ill-conditioned because there are many more unknowns than observations. The approach is based on a multivariate analysis technique known as Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA). By collecting two ensembles of observations, it is possible to find the latent dimensionality where the data are maximally correlated. This produces a reduced and orthogonal space where the problem is not ill-conditioned. In this research, CCA was used to extract …

The Causes And Effects Of Job Dissatisfacation Among Emergency Room Nurses, Karen Shuptar Jan 2000

The Causes And Effects Of Job Dissatisfacation Among Emergency Room Nurses, Karen Shuptar

A Comparative Study Of The Compression Strength Of Corrugated Shipping Containers And Corrugated Board, Based On Different Corrugation Directions, Richard Curatalo

Theses

This study evaluates compression damage to corrugated shipping containers used in the small parcel delivery system. A client is experiencing an unacceptable level of end-to-end compression resistance during shipment through small parcel companies, while never experiencing any top-to-bottom compression damage. According to small parcel company workers, there is a need for more end-to-end compression strength in corrugated shipping containers. This study examines the effect of corrugation direction on corrugated shipping containers and corrugated board. Box compression testing (BCT) is performed on regular-slotted containers with different corrugation directions. Edgewise compression testing (ECT) is also used in comparing the compression strengths of …

Illusory Coerrelations In School Psychologists' Diagnoses Of Learning Disabilities, Marc Renzoni Jan 2000

Illusory Coerrelations In School Psychologists' Diagnoses Of Learning Disabilities, Marc Renzoni

Theses

Illusory correlation is the perception of an association between two uncorrected variables such as intersubtest scatter on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children - Third Edition (WISC-III) and the presence of a learning disability. This study assessed the extent to which school psychologists are influenced by this illusory correlation. Three independent variables were varied systematically. One variable was relevant to the diagnosis of a learning disability (a discrepancy between expected and actual levels of achievement on the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (WIAT)). Another was irrelevant to the diagnosis (intersubtest scatter on the WISC-III). The third independent variable was used as …

Since we are already used to putting a watch on …

Using Δe Distribution As A Predictor Of Digital Proofing Performance, Raul Eduardo Gonzalez Dorbecker Jan 2000

Using Δe Distribution As A Predictor Of Digital Proofing Performance, Raul Eduardo Gonzalez Dorbecker

Theses

The performance of color matching in ICC-based Color Management Systems (CMS) is being improved, and its workflow established. As part of the digital workflow, digital proofing plays an important roll in the control of color from capture to the printed page, but its method of evaluation is not clearly understood.

To evaluate the degree of color matching by digital proofing in an ICC-based CMS between a reference image and a sample image, the [formula] calculated by averaging the individual color differences is being used. Doing a qualitative evaluation, ICC-based CMS should be able to stand behind the statement that the …

Shaping Competition On The Internet: Who Owns Product And Pricing Information, Maureen A. O'Rourke

Faculty Scholarship

Historically, markets have almost always fallen short of satisfying the conditions for and providing consumers with the benefits of perfect competition. Certain characteristics of electronic markets, however, enhance the possibility that e-commercel will be conducted in an environment that comes closer to attaining the perfectly competitive ideal than that of most conventional markets.

Transforming Cultural Conflict In An Age Of Complexity, Michelle Lebaron Jan 2000

Transforming Cultural Conflict In An Age Of Complexity, Michelle Lebaron

All Faculty Publications

This article will survey several definitions of culture, arguing that the most useful approach is to define culture broadly and to recognize its significance to most or all conflicts. Some of the ways that culture affects conflicts will be outlined, accompanied by examples. These include: culture as a lens that both facilitates and blocks effective communication; culture and world view differences as the subject of conflicts; and conflicts related to identity and recognition as facets of cultural differences. Further discussed are Western models of third party intervention, inviting readers to examine the values and assumptions underlying them. Challenges inherent in …

¡Viva La Evolución!: Recognizing Unconscious Motive In Title Vii, Ann C. Mcginley Jan 2000

¡Viva La Evolución!: Recognizing Unconscious Motive In Title Vii, Ann C. Mcginley

Scholarly Works

This article analyzes the different proof mechanisms developed under Title VII discriminatory treatment doctrine, demonstrating their ability to identify unconscious, as well as conscious, discriminatory behavior. It demonstrates that soon after its enactment Title VII began to evolve, expanding its reach to unconscious discrimination. Although in many instances courts were unaware of this expansion, courts appear to have followed their intuition to further the broad remedial and preventive purposes of the statute. In response to the evolution and to the courts' failure to articulate a justification for their decisions, a counter-evolution is currently occurring, with many courts attempting rigidly to …

Variation Of Constitutive Model Formulation On Analytical Cake Filtration Models, Scott A. Wells Jan 2000

Variation Of Constitutive Model Formulation On Analytical Cake Filtration Models, Scott A. Wells

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Constitutive properties are required to model porosity, effective stress, porewater pressure, or permeability during cake filtration. By using an analytical cake filtration model based on Tiller (1975) with various constitutive property formulations, predictions of effective stress, permeability, and porosity distributions in a filter cake can be made. This analytical approach was only valid when spatially average values of porosity and pressure differential were constant over time. Several different constitutive property formulations were compared to data of effective stress and permeability as a function of porosity for kaolin clay in water. Also the spatial distribution of porosity in a filter cake …

From International Treaties To Internet Norms: The Evolution Of International Trademark Disputes In The Internet Age, Ajay K. Mehrotra, Marcelo Halpern

Articles by Maurer Faculty

In today's dynamic, digital economy, there is a global clash between geographically bounded intellectual property rights and the limitless reach of the Internet. Traditionally, discrepancies in international intellectual property rights, such as trademark disputes, have been resolved through time-consuming, multilateral state-to-state treaty negotiations that have global harmonization as the primary goal.

With the explosion of e-commerce and the birth of a New Economy, however, such a traditional process is no longer economically viable. Instead, a new approach towards international intellectual property is fast emerging - one that rests not on treaties between multiple states, but on the private contracting of …

The Keepers Of The Gates: Intellectual Property, Antitrust, And The Regulatory Implications Of Systems Technology, Dana R. Wagner Jan 2000

The Keepers Of The Gates: Intellectual Property, Antitrust, And The Regulatory Implications Of Systems Technology, Dana R. Wagner

UC Law Journal

This Article identifies and analyzes an emerging trend in the legal regulation of high-technology industries. The Article begins by distinguishing between conventional forms of computer technology and "systems technology," the architectural technology that defines computing environments and determines the products with which they can interface. It argues that a doctrinal shift is occurring in the laws that regulate the competitive behavior of systems-technology innovators: a shift away from exclusionary entitlements and towards a system of liability-rule protections. As evidence of this shift, the Article examines recent legal disputes involving microprocessor technology and computer bus design.

The Article then argues that …
