The Log Cabin | Public Perception And Mediated Reality (1840 – 1980), Aspen M. Regan
The Log Cabin | Public Perception And Mediated Reality (1840 – 1980), Aspen M. Regan
Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses
This capstone examines the evolution of the log cabin from 1840 to 1980. At its core, the project questions the legacy of the log cabin from its origins as simply being a traditional dwelling typology to its establishment as a cultural icon or rather, an enduring vessel that established the American Dream and ideals of self-reliance, freedom, and individualism deep within the heart of American culture.
Chapter One situates the log cabin historically and architecturally, defining the popular frontier dwelling as being a single-pen horizontal log constructed cabin. It then explores the cabin’s emergence as a cultural image through political …

The Influence Of Social Media On The Product Life Cycle In Fast Fashion: A Shein Case Study On Environmental And Social Impacts, Clara R. Devine
Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Fast fashion has transformed global consumer culture through its rapid product cycles, affordability, and accessibility. However, this model has also contributed significantly to environmental degradation, excessive textile waste, and unethical labor practices. Social media platforms have accelerated these patterns by amplifying short-lived trends and influencing consumer purchasing behavior. This study aims to analyze the relationship between social media activity and the fast-fashion life cycle, with a focus on how online engagement drives consumption, production speed, and environmental impact. The research utilized a quantitative and analytical approach, combining correlation analysis and time-series data to evaluate the connection between SHEIN’s growing user …
Hope Or Fear: The Communication Battle To Engage Southern College Students In The Issue Of Climate Change, Andie Forbes
Hope Or Fear: The Communication Battle To Engage Southern College Students In The Issue Of Climate Change, Andie Forbes
Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
Climate change is a pressing issue that young people have been exposed to since childhood. Fear is the predominant emotional appeal used in climate change messaging, though this appeal has been shown to cause disengagement. To motivate young people to engage in climate change, this study seeks to understand how Southern college students respond to different emotional appeals in climate change messaging. The role politics and religion play are also analyzed in this study. Three focus groups were shown headlines and digital posters that utilized hope, fear, and influential figures in their messages. A moderator guide was used to prompt …

Pour & Ponder: A Gen Z Evaluation Of Hospitality And Communication In Wineries Of The Ozarks, Evan W. Seay
Agricultural Education, Communications and Technology Undergraduate Honors Theses
Generation Z represents an emerging consumer group within the hospitality and tourism industry, yet winery experiences are often designed with more traditional audiences in mind. As younger consumers increasingly value authenticity, communication, and experience-driven hospitality, wineries must consider how their practices align with evolving expectations. This honors thesis explores winery hospitality and communication practices in the Ozarks through a Generation Z perspective using a creative, experience-based approach. The final product of this project was Pour & Ponder, a podcast created to document reflective discussions following visits to three wineries: Sassafras Springs Vineyard, St. James Winery, and Ozark Hills Winery. …

The Quiet Persistence Of Dreams: Searching For Belonging Within The Latino Student Journey, Isveydi Moreno Vera
The Quiet Persistence Of Dreams: Searching For Belonging Within The Latino Student Journey, Isveydi Moreno Vera
Theses & ETDs
This thesis explores the tension between belonging and aspiration among first-generation Latino students navigating higher education. Through a series of surreal and symbolic paintings inspired by memories, transformation, and cultural imagery, I visualize the emotional negotiation between personal identity and societal expectations. Rather than portraying “The Dream” as a singular goal, my work reimagines it as a space where belonging is continually shaped, questioned, and redefined. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Tanya Arguiniga, Tony Ortega, and Yvette Mayorga, I build upon their use of storytelling, surrealism, and materiality to express complex cultural experiences. My series aims to honor the …

Faculty White Papers
This unofficial summary compiles information from reports submitted by civil society and others for the Fourth Cycle of the Universal Periodic Review of the United States.
The authors reviewed the submissions, which are reports from civil society and others, and grouped issues thematically, using the 2020 UPR themes and recommendations as the organizing framework. Within each theme, the authors synthesized recurring issues, patterns, and concerns identified across multiple submissions. For each issue, the unofficial summary follows a structured approach that presents international obligations first, followed by United States domestic law, and then facts drawn from the submissions. However, where reports …
The Constitutional Future Of Trademark Tarnishment, Jake Linford
The Constitutional Future Of Trademark Tarnishment, Jake Linford
William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal
This Article is the first to examine whether trademark anti-tarnishment laws should be deemed constitutional after the Supreme Court’s 2024 decision in Vidal v. Elster. Anti-tarnishment laws protect famous brands from uses that could damage their reputation, even when consumers are not confused about who makes the tarnishing product.
The Supreme Court recently declared some trademark registration restrictions unconstitutional in Matal v. Tam and Iancu v. Brunetti. In these cases, the Court struck down federal laws that prevented registration of “disparaging” trademarks and “scandalous or immoral” trademarks because they categorized the registration bars as unconstitutional viewpoint-based restrictions. These …
Freedom At The Polls: Guns, Speech, And The Right To Vote, Matthew B. Russett
Freedom At The Polls: Guns, Speech, And The Right To Vote, Matthew B. Russett
William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal
Part I of this Note provides a brief overview of current firearm prohibitions at polling locations and examines the legislative justifications for these restrictions. Recently, an increasing number of states have enacted firearm prohibitions as a prophylactic measure against voter intimidation and disruption. Part II applies New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass’n v. Bruen’s history and tradition test to determine whether these prohibitions pass constitutional muster under the Second Amendment. Indeed, a critical examination of historical voting laws in America shows a compelling history of limiting firearms near polling locations. Part III examines similar themes in First Amendment …
The Delivery And Evaluation Of The Diabetes Prevention Program Through A Distance Education Modality, Celine Siddall
The Delivery And Evaluation Of The Diabetes Prevention Program Through A Distance Education Modality, Celine Siddall
Student Projects for Graduate Degrees
Type 2 diabetes is a significant and growing public health concern, disproportionately affecting American Indian and Alaska Native populations. The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) has demonstrated effectiveness in reducing diabetes risk through lifestyle modification. However, implementation in rural and geographically isolated regions presents unique challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic further disrupted in-person delivery models, creating the need for rapid transformation to virtual formats.
This graduate project evaluated the implementation of a virtually delivered Prevent T2 at Chief Andrew Isaac Health Center program in the Tana Chiefs Conference region. This program was adapted for distance delivery using Zoom and supported by collaboration …
Human Subject Research Payments At The University Of Alaska Anchorage, Rebecca Kyle Van Wyck
Human Subject Research Payments At The University Of Alaska Anchorage, Rebecca Kyle Van Wyck
Student Projects for Graduate Degrees
Human Subjects Research (HSR) participant payment processes are an underexamined but consequential component of research administration. At the University of Alaska, Anchorage (UAA), these processes op- erate within a complex institutional environment shaped by Institutional Review Board (IRB) requirements, Internal Revenue Service (IRS) reporting rules, and administrative procedures that remain only partially formalized. This capstone project examined how HSR participant payment processes are implemented in practice at UAA and where meaningful gaps exist between institutional policy and real-world execution.
The study used a qualitative single-institution case study design combining semi-structured interviews with five Principal Investigators (PIs), document analysis, and peer-institution …
Rising Prices, Rising Homes: How Inflation Shapes The U.S. Housing Market, Samantha Suarez
Rising Prices, Rising Homes: How Inflation Shapes The U.S. Housing Market, Samantha Suarez
Theses & ETDs
This thesis explores the causes and consequences of inflation in the United States, with a particular focus on housing. It begins by examining the main drivers of housing inflation, including supply shortages, rising construction costs, low interest rates, and shifts in demand during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. These housing-specific factors are compared to broader sources of inflation such as fiscal stimulus, monetary policy, global supply chain disruptions, and geopolitical conflicts. The paper also analyzes how inflation affects households across different income groups. Because housing is a large share of total expenses, rising rents and home prices tend to place …
Permeability And Mechanical Response Of Propped Fractured Rocks Under Varied Fluid Viscosities, Hebatalla A. Ghoneim
Permeability And Mechanical Response Of Propped Fractured Rocks Under Varied Fluid Viscosities, Hebatalla A. Ghoneim
Doctoral Dissertations
Hydraulic fracturing relies on proppants to preserve fracture conductivity under reservoir stresses. The long-term performance of propped fractures is influenced by grain crushing, redistribution of fines, pack rearrangement, proppant–rock embedment, and shear deformation. These mechanisms are not fully understood under combined compression and shear stress paths, particularly when viscous carrier fluids interact with fractured rock and proppant packs. This dissertation provides experimental data and device development to characterize proppant and rock behavior relevant to these coupled mechanical and hydraulic processes.Proppant grain-scale strength and pack-scale mechanical response were first examined through uniaxial grain tests, crushing tests, and drained and undrained triaxial …
J.R.R. Tolkien’S Creation Of The Modern Fantasy Genre As A Response To Modernity By Way Of A Return To A Past Inspired By The Middle Ages, As Revealed Through The Creatures Of Middle-Earth, Regarding Race, Gender, Empire, And Religion, Jonathan Levitt
Doctoral Dissertations
Fantasy authors existed well before and during J.R.R Tolkien’s time, but he brought a new gravitas to the genre, building upon but disposing of and reconceptualizing conventional notions (such as the presence of fairies) to earn his moniker as the father of the modern fantasy genre. Although Tolkien’s stories are inspired by Northern myths, the world he creates is to be understood as historically real, as it incorporates authentic linguistic and cultural underpinnings of a society informed by his experience as a philologist and professor of Anglo Saxon. The intensity and longevity of Tolkien’s influence on the literary world and …
Who Works From Home, What Is It Worth, And Where Do They Live? Occupational Classification, Work Arrangement Preferences, And Residential Location Choice, Logan Robert Malone
Who Works From Home, What Is It Worth, And Where Do They Live? Occupational Classification, Work Arrangement Preferences, And Residential Location Choice, Logan Robert Malone
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation examines work-from-home (WFH) arrangements through three complementary lenses: occupational feasibility, worker preferences, and residential location choice. The first chapter develops a continuous tools-based measure of WFH potential using the Department of Labor's O*NET Tools and Technology Supplement, which documents the tools used in each occupation. By categorizing tools according to their consistency with remote work and aggregating to the occupation level, I construct a measure that closely aligns with existing classifications while offering finer-grained distinctions than the binary categorizations common in the literature. The tools-based measure agrees with a widely cited task-based measure for approximately 80% of occupations …
Exploring Social Emotional Learning Competencies In Middle School Theatre Education, Katherine J. Mullins
Exploring Social Emotional Learning Competencies In Middle School Theatre Education, Katherine J. Mullins
Honors Theses
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is a method of education in which students are taught to grow in multifaceted ways. Students learn and grow as more than just students in their respective subjects, they grow in emotional intelligence, empathy, and interpersonal skills as well. SEL is not always easy to incorporate into teaching practices, but it tends to lend itself well to a theatre education setting. In a middle school specific setting, SEL and theatre-based activities yield positive results in student competencies both in and out of the classroom. In this research, through comparative analysis and reflective inquiry, I aim to …
Romantasy's Inevitable Lasting Legacy, Devon T. Gibson
Romantasy's Inevitable Lasting Legacy, Devon T. Gibson
Honors Theses
The “romantasy” subgenre of YA literature has become influential for its novel combination of romance and fantasy as well as its popularity on Booktok, the book-based subsection of the popular social media app, Tiktok. This connection has become somewhat infamous in popular culture and has been underresearched due to how recently both concepts became significant forces within the publishing industry. This thesis argues that romantasy is a novel and lasting YA subgenre that is not dependent on Booktok to maintain it. The analysis of Sarah J. Maas’ A Court of Thorns and Roses (2015) and Rebecca Yarros’ Fourth Wing (2023) …
The Culture Of The Convent: How Recruitment Shapes Success In Religious Life, Elizabeth A. Minneci
The Culture Of The Convent: How Recruitment Shapes Success In Religious Life, Elizabeth A. Minneci
Honors Theses
Catholic nuns in the United States have experienced a substantial decline in membership, with an 80% decrease in new members from 1965 to 2023 (CARA, 2023). Sisters impact their communities in a multitude of ways, often through education or volunteerism efforts (CCUSA, 2026; Levin, 2011; Sisters of Mercy, 2025). Previous research on Catholic nuns has not qualitatively explored Catholic nuns’ recruitment efforts, with most research providing quantitative data insights (CARA). Thus, the purpose of this study is to identify the recruitment methods convents utilize to identify pain points and avenues for improvement. Seven religious sisters were recruited for this study. …
The Ethical Imperative To Shift Toward A More Equitable Literary Education, Eleanor L. Bryant
The Ethical Imperative To Shift Toward A More Equitable Literary Education, Eleanor L. Bryant
Honors Theses
Choices governing canon formation have material, emotional, and intellectual consequences. Within canon formation, authors of different social identities, consistent with macrosocial power differentials, are unequally valued and shape cultural consciousness about which texts are aesthetically and intellectually valuable. It’s important to recognize canon formation as a process of unequally distributing cultural capital and knowledge production. The strategies and imperatives outlined here are basic first steps toward utilizing the classroom as a site to counter misogyny, racism, classism, colonialism, and homophobia. This project aims not only to deepen understanding of the sociological conditions of canon formation but also to impose an …

Toward An Understanding Of Social Marketing’S Influence On Alcohol-Related Behaviors In College Students: Health Promotion Strategies For College Campuses, Lily K. Richards
Toward An Understanding Of Social Marketing’S Influence On Alcohol-Related Behaviors In College Students: Health Promotion Strategies For College Campuses, Lily K. Richards
Honors Theses
Alcohol use among college students remains a persistent public health concern, influenced by a complex interaction of social, environmental, and behavioral factors. This literature review examines the prevalence of alcohol consumption in college populations, the associated short-term and long-term health consequences, and the role of social norms, peer influence, and environmental context in shaping drinking behaviors. Research consistently demonstrates that alcohol use is deeply embedded within college culture, where normative misperceptions and peer dynamics contribute to increased consumption. (Perkins, 2002; Borsari & Carey, 2001; Hingson et al., 2017). In addition, environmental factors such as alcohol availability and targeted marketing further …
Salt-Dependent Purification Of Green Fluorescent Protein Via Hydrophobic Interaction Chromatography, Katie L. Collins
Salt-Dependent Purification Of Green Fluorescent Protein Via Hydrophobic Interaction Chromatography, Katie L. Collins
Honors Theses
Green fluorescent protein, GFP, is a widely used fluorescent reporter, and its purification provides a clear model for studying downstream bioprocessing. This thesis investigates how binding-buffer salt strength affects GFP retention and elution during hydrophobic interaction chromatography, HIC, by comparing three conditions (1.0×, 0.8×, and 0.6×). GFP-expressing E. coli were lysed and clarified, and the lysate was purified on HIC columns; collected fractions were evaluated qualitatively under UV illumination to track fluorescence distribution. Results showed a salt-dependent trend in which higher salt improved retention and shifted fluorescence toward later elution fractions, while reduced salt weakened hydrophobic interactions and increased earlier …
(Human)Ities In The Field Of Business, Emma M. Bitting
(Human)Ities In The Field Of Business, Emma M. Bitting
Honors Theses
Business is often seen as a field driven by numbers, but it is fundamentally powered by shared narratives, such as branding and mission statements. Increased optimization and efficiency has resulted in industries stripped of their humanity, leaving professionals interpersonally deficient. In an increasingly competitive workforce, one’s humanity has become a primary differentiator from the competition (artificial or otherwise). The division between the humanities and business has become a professional liability apparent to any observer, yet it is rarely addressed as the systemic failure it has become. This very divide increasingly hinders progress, rather than serving as the specialization of fields …
