This study aims to contribute to an understanding of consumers' perception of product and service information on the Internet. The research is exploratory in nature. Consumers' perceptions towards the Internet as a product and service information source were measured along a construct relating to perceptions towards the Internet information. …

The Relevance And Application Of Public Relations Theories To Australian Diplomatic Communications Management, Renae Michelle Brockman Jan 2000

The Relevance And Application Of Public Relations Theories To Australian Diplomatic Communications Management, Renae Michelle Brockman

Theses : Honours

Communication, in the form of diplomatic discourse between nation-states, has long been considered an effective tool of foreign affairs and international relations. The management of international government communication (whether it is through the foreign affairs department of the government of a nation-state, or by the embassies and high commissions that represent that nation) comes under pressure from various internal and external forces acting in the international political environment such as impending war, economic and financial crises, natural disasters, political instability and the approaching millennium. Arguably, it is possible that an alternative method of communications management could be considered to ensure …

Mothers, Gaze And Rape : Almodóvar's Cinema And The Construction Of Gender, Gorana Mlinarevic Jan 2000

Mothers, Gaze And Rape : Almodóvar's Cinema And The Construction Of Gender, Gorana Mlinarevic

Theses : Honours

Although often named a 'women's director': Pedro Almodóvar has frequently been attacked by feminist, mainly Anglo-Saxon, film critics. Most of them have found his portrayals of women to be very humiliating. On the other hand, Spanish heterosexual, mainly male, film critics have attacked him for focusing only on portrayals of marginal genders and sexualities. Nevertheless, he has become one of the most, if not the most, commercially successful Spanish film directors. The intention of this project is not just to analyse Almodóvar's cinema and the critics' acceptance/rejection of the same. Rather, the project is intending, through use of 'Ia politique …

A Qualitative Investigation Into The Use Of The Internet In The Information Search Phase Of The Buying Decision Process, Kiaran Geen Jan 2000

A Qualitative Investigation Into The Use Of The Internet In The Information Search Phase Of The Buying Decision Process, Kiaran Geen

Theses : Honours

There have been a significant number of reports suggesting that the Internet will radically change accepted business and customer relationships. The literature to date has focused on the phenomenon of the Internet as well as more specific aspects such as its interactivity, how to market a Web site and security issues. There appears to be very little research on how consumer behaviour theories relate to the Internet. This study explored the extent to which the Internet is in the information search phase of the buying decision process, amongst Internet literate consumers. A qualitative investigation using virtual focus groups was conducted. …

The significance of the issue relates to the equality of opportunity for girls and boys in the classroom. Drawings are of significance because they provide teachers and parents with a glimpse of the developing child in terms of his or her creative and mental growth, feelings, emotions and world-view. …

How The Grateful Dead Turned Alternative Business And Legal Strategies Into A Great American Success Story, Brian C. Drobnik Jan 2000

How The Grateful Dead Turned Alternative Business And Legal Strategies Into A Great American Success Story, Brian C. Drobnik

Vanderbilt Law Review

That the Grateful Dead were "different" undoubtedly is true on a broad social level. But it is not so easy to ascertain how they were different in the business and legal aspects of their enterprise. The ephemeral nature of their approach stems from the fact that they conducted their affairs within and alongside the world of statutes and contracts and yet provided themselves with a great degree of independence from that world. This Note will comment on the Dead's perspective on and their ultimate rejection of many of the business and legal strategies traditionally ascribed to in the industry. After …

Black And White Undergraduate Resident University Students' Stages Of Intercultural Sensitivity And Racial Identity At Indiana State University, Kenneth Darryl Coopwood Jan 2000

Black And White Undergraduate Resident University Students' Stages Of Intercultural Sensitivity And Racial Identity At Indiana State University, Kenneth Darryl Coopwood

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The summary report of the 1996 climate study conducted at Indiana State University revealed that the campus could appropriately be termed chilly”. The study further revealed that only 54% of Black students and 74.9% of White students would recommend the university to another potential student. The ability to survive in chilly” climates has many determinants rooted in students' ability to identify with self (Tatum, 1997). However, since there were no or inaccurate references to student present identities, retention-based programmatic developments thought to be central to student perceptions of campus life were perceived to be in vain. The use of cognitive …

Sources Of Information For Commercial Farms: Usefulness Of Media And Personal Sources, Brent A. Gloy, Jay Akridge, Linda D. Whipker Jan 2000

Sources Of Information For Commercial Farms: Usefulness Of Media And Personal Sources, Brent A. Gloy, Jay Akridge, Linda D. Whipker

Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications

The usefulness of several information sources is examined for U.S. farms with sales in excess of $100,000. The results indicate that crop/livestock-specific magazines and general farm magazines are the most useful information sources. Analyses indicate that the types and number of different commodities that the farm produced, as well as Internet use, are the most consistent predictors of attitudes toward various information sources. However, characteristics that explain attitudes toward different information sources vary substantially across the information sources considered.

Shamanism And Alien Abductions : A Comparative Study, Simon Brian Harvey-Wilson Jan 2000

Shamanism And Alien Abductions : A Comparative Study, Simon Brian Harvey-Wilson

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Some UFO researchers (ufologists) claim that being abducted by aliens can be compared with shamanic initiation experiences in traditional societies in that both types of experience may be similarly transformative, leading to a more spiritual or animistic world-view, a deep concern for the environment and the development of paranormal abilities such as healing. This qualitative study is designed to investigate the validity of such claims. The research aim is to see whether the experiences and subsequent world-view of eleven alien abductees (eight women and three men) from a local abduction support group are similar to those of the typical shaman …

Parents' Construction Of Emotional Abuse And Neglect Of Children Aged Birth To Six Years In A Rural District In Uganda, Edreda Tuwangye Jan 2000

Parents' Construction Of Emotional Abuse And Neglect Of Children Aged Birth To Six Years In A Rural District In Uganda, Edreda Tuwangye

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Child abuse and neglect are endemic not only in Western countries but also in developing countries such as Uganda. An investigation was conducted to establish how parents living in rural Uganda construe child abuse and neglect. The study is of theoretical interest on two counts. First, there is evidence to suggest that Western accounts of child abuse and neglect may not apply to developing countries, a matter of importance given the dominance of Western research in the thinking of policy and intervention studies. Second, most of the research assumes that abuse and neglect are self-evident constructs and there is seldom …

Bandwidth Management And Quality Of Service, Adalbert Engel Jan 2000

Bandwidth Management And Quality Of Service, Adalbert Engel

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

With the advent of bandwidth-hungry video and audio applications, demand for bandwidth is expected to exceed supply. Users will require more bandwidth and, as always, there are likely to be more users. As the Internet user base becomes more diverse, there is an increasing perception that Internet Service Providers (ISPs) should be able to differentiate between users, so that the specific needs of different types of users can be met. Differentiated services is seen as a possible solution to the bandwidth problem. Currently, however, the technology used on the Internet differentiates neither between users, nor between applications. The thesis focuses …

Resource Allocation And Efficiency In Public Sector Audits, Kar M. Chong Jan 2000

Resource Allocation And Efficiency In Public Sector Audits, Kar M. Chong

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

In recent years, the push for reform in the Australian public sector audit has placed the Office of the Auditor-General (hereafter OAG) in a more contestable or market- like environment, where the OAG is accountable for an efficient and effective provision of public sector audit. The purpose of this study is to compare the cost efficiency of in-house and contract-out arrangements to deliver financial audits in the public sector. It empirically tests whether there are audit cost and audit fee differences between in-house providers (i.e., the OAG) and contractors (i.e., public accounting firms). The secondary aims of this study are …

Attitude And Behaviour Dichotomy In Sme Strategic Alliance: A South West Of Western Australian Study, Dianne Wingham Jan 2000

Attitude And Behaviour Dichotomy In Sme Strategic Alliance: A South West Of Western Australian Study, Dianne Wingham

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Strategic alliances are generally perceived as cooperative relationships constrained within the parameters of bounded rationality, seeking to maximise their levels of control in a turbulent economic environment. They are also commonly conceptualised as a means of creating competitive advantage in business. In regional areas of Western Australia they are favoured by government instrumentalities as a means of making small to medium enterprises (SMEs) more competitive. With the dominant global emphasis in the literature on big business, relatively little is known still about strategic alliances in small to medium enterprises. Moreover, the research on strategic alliances within Australia s also limited, …

Numerical Ode Solvers That Preserve First Integrals, Thuya Aung Jan 2000

Numerical Ode Solvers That Preserve First Integrals, Thuya Aung

Theses

The measurement of the change in energy by a force from a dynamical action is central for study of modern dynamical mechanics. By analyzing energy along with variational calculus, the disciplines of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian dynamics have emerged. This thesis describes these systems, and discusses numerical solutions to a system of equations by Lagrangian, Hamiltonian, and First Integral solutions.

Mechanical Supported Adaptable Wing, Cory Pike Jan 2000

Mechanical Supported Adaptable Wing, Cory Pike

Theses

There are several advantages to the incorporation of an adaptable wing on an aircraft. Among these are increased fuel efficiency, greater maneuverability, and an improved ability to negotiate adverse conditions. This thesis explores the concept of a mechanically supported adaptable wing, where the supports are in the form of virtual spars running lengthwise along a wing of uniform cross-section. With no cross-sectional support to the wing, the skin spanning the area between the virtual spars experiences a certain amount of deflection due to the various aerodynamic forces acting on the wing. This thesis develops a process for optimizing (minimizing) the …

Fine-Tuning Tasini: Privileges Of Electronic Distribution And Reproduction, Wendy J. Gordon Jan 2000

Fine-Tuning Tasini: Privileges Of Electronic Distribution And Reproduction, Wendy J. Gordon

Faculty Scholarship

The United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit is arguably the soundest copyright court in the nation. In Tasini v. New York Times, it handled a challenge brought by a group of freelance writers against publishers and database proprietors. The controversy, now pending in the United States Supreme Court, has wide importance because it will determine what entitlements attach to a publisher who purchases a privilege to include a freelancer's story in the publisher's magazine or newspaper. Essentially, the issue is whether a publisher, who has not purchased the story's copyright and has not obtained an explicit …

Graph Coloring Heuristics From Investigation Of Smallest Hard To Color Graphs, Andrew Radin Jan 2000

Graph Coloring Heuristics From Investigation Of Smallest Hard To Color Graphs, Andrew Radin

Theses

Vertex coloring of graphs is an NP-complete problem. No polynomial time algorithm is known to color graphs optimally. The best we can do to handle vertex coloring of graphs is to create heuristics which provide a guess as to an optimal coloring. This thesis examines a number of known vertex coloring heuristics, and compares their performance to a brute-force optimal coloring. These comparisons are made for relatively small graphs with low numbers of vertices. The behaviors of the existing heuristics is examined to aid in the creation of new heuristics. The new heuristics are compared against the existing heuristics for …
