Teachers' Expressed Beliefs And Practices About Developmentally Appropriate Education Of Multi-Age And Single-Age Classrooms, Dale P. Lynch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the expressed beliefs and practices about developmental education from early childhood teachers in Tennessee's First Educational District. A questionnaire measuring expressed beliefs and practices was administered to teachers (kindergarten through third grade) in public schools with both multi-age and single-age classrooms. The area of teaching specialization along with the number of years taught within the organization structure are paramount in the study. Teachers' expressed beliefs concerning the amount of outside influences with planning and implementing instruction are also noted. Educators were asked to respond to 36 likert-type items regarding their beliefs about …

Orality As The Key To Understanding Apostolic Proclamation In The Epistles, Thomas Winger May 1997

Orality As The Key To Understanding Apostolic Proclamation In The Epistles, Thomas Winger

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

Redaction criticism and its modern successors in the literary field, while they give more credit to the text and the author, have at the same time mired the academy again into a modern mud of sources and manipulation. There is promise in certain new paths—rhetoric, reader-response, speech-act theory, methods which we will note briefly in the first chapter. But finally we must move out of the "academy" and into the church. For the orality of Scripture is not just about its origin but also about its use and purpose. The Scriptures are a liturgical piece. They belong not on the …

A Qualitative Study Of A College Visual Arts Course: A Multicultural Perspective, Jacqueline A. Badman May 1997

A Qualitative Study Of A College Visual Arts Course: A Multicultural Perspective, Jacqueline A. Badman

Theses and Dissertations

The United States is a multicultural place. With its ever increasing cultural and ethnic diversity, multicultural education is important. Since the visual arts have always been produced and perceived within cultures and offer students unique opportunities to explore human expression and experience, the analysis of an introductory art course taught within a multicultural context at a Midwestern university was a sensible starting point. This was especially timely since little research exists in relation to the visual arts taught from a multicultural perspective at the higher education level, and more theoretical works regarding multicultural visual arts exist than do actual studies. …

The "Defense Of Marriage Act" And Authoritarian Morality, Alec Walen May 1997

The "Defense Of Marriage Act" And Authoritarian Morality, Alec Walen

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

The "Defense of Marriage Act" has defined marriage at the federal level for the purpose of denying recognition to same-sex marriages. It thereby perpetuates the unequal treatment of homosexuals, and does so by denying them a fundamental right-the right to marry. In this Essay, Dr. Walen examines the wide range of justifications offered in Congress for this law. Six categories of argument are assessed: (1) politics and economics, (2) history and tradition, (3) religion, (4) the essential nature of marriage and the family, (5) social.decay, and (6) morality. Walen concludes that none of the justifications prove to be adequate to …

Anne Sexton's Poetic Quest For God, Heather Lee Lustig Apr 1997

Anne Sexton's Poetic Quest For God, Heather Lee Lustig

Theses & Honors Papers

Critics including Alicia Ostriker and Diana Hume George believe Anne Sexton's poetic quest for God to be a failure. Ostriker asserts that Sexton's pursuit of a loving God in whom she can have faith ends merely as "a heroic failure." Her statement echoes George's description of the "pathetic end of Anne Sexton's quest for the Father." These critics view Sexton's quest through the perspective of orthodox Christianity's patriarchal system. However, while sexton seeks a Father figure who will not oppress her but rather save her from self destruction, she redefines her "religion" and God to include women. She merges with …

Let Me Not To The Marriage Of True Minds Admit Impediments : English Renaissance Marriage Rituals And Shakespeare's Plays, Rana L. Wilson Apr 1997

Let Me Not To The Marriage Of True Minds Admit Impediments : English Renaissance Marriage Rituals And Shakespeare's Plays, Rana L. Wilson

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

In the English Renaissance, many types of marriages existed, and the partners involved in each related to one another differently. This paper concentrates on the marriages of the nobility in the Renaissance. The literature of the era portrayed the formations of marriages and the everyday lives of the couples. Shakespeare's plays provide an ideal framework for looking at this, and chapters two and four discuss how he portrays married couples in his plays.

Images Of Women In Abdelhak Serhane's Le Soliel Des Obscurs, Wendy Grace Cook Apr 1997

Images Of Women In Abdelhak Serhane's Le Soliel Des Obscurs, Wendy Grace Cook

Dissertations and Theses

Current trends in North African francophone literature include a movement towards the exploration of alienation and exile, most often in the form of novels written about Maghrebian immigrants in Europe. Yet this alienation exists within the North African context as well, and it is possible to feel alienated and exiled, as well as marginalized, within one's homeland. This question is explored by Moroccan francophone author Abdelhak Serhane in his novel, Le Soleil des obscurs, which is the focus of this study.

The purpose of the research is to examine the four principle female characters in the novel and relate …

Paper Session I-C - Project Apollo & The Cold War: Understanding The Space Race As Ritual Combat, Hal Issen Apr 1997

Paper Session I-C - Project Apollo & The Cold War: Understanding The Space Race As Ritual Combat, Hal Issen

Space Congress® Proceedings

Why did we go to the moon? Even the astronomers who worked on Project Apollo could not pretend that it was inspired by a driving love of science. It is hard to believe that the urge to explore was the motive; less than one-percent of the surface was ever explored by man. Three out of ten missions were canceled before the program was abandoned twenty-five years ago, with no plans to return. What did Project Apollo mean?

President Kennedy proposed Project Apollo at a special session of Congress on May 25, 1961 after only four months in office. His campaign …

The Prevalence Of Adoption Among Children Diagnosed With Learning Disabilities And Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Karma Jo Roach Apr 1997

The Prevalence Of Adoption Among Children Diagnosed With Learning Disabilities And Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Karma Jo Roach

Theses & Honors Papers

This study investigated the prevalence of adoption among children diagnosed with Learning Disabilities (LD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Parents who were members of the Learning Disabilities Association (LDA) of a mid Atlantic state completed a two-part questionnaire with information about their school aged live-at-home children. A Chi-Square one sample test was used to compute a chi square statistic based on the observed frequency in the study and the expected frequency of adoption in the general population. The Chi-Square value was 75.773 (df=l) with a significance level of .0001. This shows a significantly greater than expected prevalence of adoption …
