(Re)Situating Ceremonial Textiles In Ifugao, Upland Philippines, B. Lynne Milgram Jan 1996

(Re)Situating Ceremonial Textiles In Ifugao, Upland Philippines, B. Lynne Milgram

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Theories of macroeconomic development argue that as communities become integrated into a world-market economy, indigenous customs are increasingly threatened. This assumes that forces such as Western missionary activities and the commercialization of household production inevitably lead to a deterioration of local arts, religion and socioeconomic practices. These theories, however, ignore the dynamics of local-level contexts and the agency of individual actors.

Since the early 1900s, the interaction of indigenous religious traditions with external religions like Christianity has created diverse ritual practices throughout the upland Philippines. An important part of the indigenous religion of the Ifugao of northern Luzon, for example, …

Between Light And Shadow, Kathryn Lypke Vigesaa Jan 1996

Between Light And Shadow, Kathryn Lypke Vigesaa

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Using a complex style of personal interviews and ethnographic documentary, visually rich in intimacy, lyricism, metaphor and sometimes startling images drawn from his subjects daily lives, the filmmaker looks at the role that textiles play in the lives of the Maya in Guatemala. Cloth is the first material that touches a child's body, it appears in every important event in a person’s life and is the last to touch a person at their death. In Quiche cosmology there are strong connections between house (milpa) and the huipile, both have 4 corners and 4 sides, all are reflections of the "skyearth"; …

Naming And Meaning: Ritual Textiles Of The Ihan Of Sarawak, Traude Gavin Jan 1996

Naming And Meaning: Ritual Textiles Of The Ihan Of Sarawak, Traude Gavin

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

In conjunction with the exhibition of Iban ritual textiles I curated at the Fowler Museum of Cultural History in Los Angeles in 1996, I gave a number of lectures based on my field research. The present paper will address some of the questions that were raised by the audience in Los Angeles. All these question are characteristic of the manner in which members of a Western, literate society tend to approach Iban cloth patterns.

This paper is divided into several parts. I begin with a brief background on the Iban people and on the ritual and social function of Iban …

Sacred Textiles From An Ancient Nubian Temple, Nettie Adams Jan 1996

Sacred Textiles From An Ancient Nubian Temple, Nettie Adams

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Since so many of the temples of the Nile Valley were converted into churches after the coming of Christianity, most of the sacred objects of the temples were inevitably lost. The discovery of furnishings or ritual paraphernalia within the walls is extremely rare. As far as I know, our discovery of textile furnishings in the temple where they were once in use is quite simply unique.

INTRODUCTION

The discovery of a previously unsuspected temple at the archaeological site of Qasr Ibrim,2 located in Egyptian Nubia, (Fig. 1) has provided us with a rich collection of sacred objects and temple …

Heirloom Cloth And Social Organization: The Ceremonial Kain Sandang Gobo Of The Minangkabau, West Sumatra, Linda Hanssen

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

The aim of this paper is to explore the role of the ceremonial shouldercloth -kain sandang gobo- as an inalienable possession in the social organization of the village society of Balai Cacang1. To this end I shall examine the kain sandang gobo for its several visual aspects and symbolic meaning, and as an heirloom cloth in the harto pusako2. The kain sandang gobo as a means of expressing rank and hierarchy will be explored by analyzing its role in the wedding-ceremony. The results will contribute to the aim of this panel, which is to …

Rationality And The Foundations Of Positive Political Theory, Mathew D. Mccubbins, Michael F. Thies Jan 1996

Rationality And The Foundations Of Positive Political Theory, Mathew D. Mccubbins, Michael F. Thies

Faculty Scholarship

In this paper, we discuss and debunk the four most common critiques of the rational choice research program (which we prefer to call Positive Political Theory) by explaining and advocating its foundations: the rationality assumption, component analysis (abstraction), strategic behavior, and theory building, in turn. We argue that the rationality assumption and component analysis, properly understood, can be seen to underlie all social science, despite the protestations of critics. We then discuss the two ways that PPT most clearly contributes to political science (i.e., what distinguishes it from other research programs), namely the introduction of strategic behavior (people do not …

Johannine Christianity: Jewish Christianity?, James F. Mcgrath Jan 1996

Johannine Christianity: Jewish Christianity?, James F. Mcgrath

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Since the publication of J. Louis Martyn's Decisive Study, History and Theology in the in the Fourth Gospel (1979), there has been a growing consensus among Johannine scholars that the Gospel of John was composed in the context of conflict with the synagogue, and that it is thus best understood and interpreted against the background of Judaism and Jewish Christianity'. However, several recent studies have sought to challenge this position, primarily on two fronts: Johannine Christology (Casey 1991 :23-38) and the Johannine attitude towards the Torah (Schnelle 1992:31-36). These recent challenges to the growing consensus have also pointed to the …

Modern Western Discourse On The Subject, Jongryul Choi Jan 1996

Modern Western Discourse On The Subject, Jongryul Choi

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the modern Western discourse on the subject. This thesis will trace the roots of the modern Western discourse on the subject from the Enlightenment era, which saw the subject as being autonomous, rational, stable, and self-constitutive. It will contend that the Hegelian subject was the culmination of the notion of the modern Western subject. Lacanian psychoanalysis will be used to show how this fictitious feature is constituted by the Oedipus story and how it works. This thesis will show that the modern Western politics was based on this fictitious subject, exemplified by …

Human Rights And Community Development Through Low-Income Women's Leadership: The Voice Of An African-American Organizer, Claudine Michel Jan 1996

Human Rights And Community Development Through Low-Income Women's Leadership: The Voice Of An African-American Organizer, Claudine Michel

William Monroe Trotter Institute Publications

In this essay, I argue that grassroots organizing appears as one of the most viable option worldwide until women are better protected through legislation and public policy. I also posit that it is important to learn from divergent leadership philosophies, from the different values, roles and styles that women adopt in various parts of the world in the course of their day-to-day activities and in their efforts to organize, to support current community programs, and to train future community leaders. This essay relates the experiences of a grassroots organizer and presents what I believe to be a successful model of …

Tapping The Wisdom Of The Ancestors: An Attempt To Recast Vodou And Morality Through The Voice Of Mama Lola And Karen Mccarthy Brown, Claudine Michel Jan 1996

Tapping The Wisdom Of The Ancestors: An Attempt To Recast Vodou And Morality Through The Voice Of Mama Lola And Karen Mccarthy Brown, Claudine Michel

William Monroe Trotter Institute Publications

The focus of this Research Report is on morality as a culture-specific and contextual phenomenon. It argues that Vodou, as a religion, has largely been misrepresented in the West and has been portrayed as having no legitimate basis for morality mainly because of its African origins. This paper attempts to interpret morality in Vodou by presenting a model of ethics construction grounded in the history of the people and based on the true meaning of the religion. It argues that Haitians have turned to their ancestral religion and to their African past to survive isolation and ostracism from the West …
