Negotiation As A Healing Process, Gerald R. Williams Jan 1996

Negotiation As A Healing Process, Gerald R. Williams

Journal of Dispute Resolution

Beginning in the late 1970's and continuing even today, there has been intense criticism in the media and elsewhere that Americans are too litigious, that people and institutions are too frequently going to court against one another. While the criticism may be partly merited, when considered from a more personal perspective, what seems remarkable is not how much litigation there is, but how little. For example, most members of society suffer harms, inconvenienses, and injustices that infringe on their legal rights and could be, if they chose, grounds for legal action. Most individuals recognize, however, that if they made a …

A Potential Understory Flora For Oak Savanna In Iowa, Karl T. Delong, Craig Hooper Jan 1996

A Potential Understory Flora For Oak Savanna In Iowa, Karl T. Delong, Craig Hooper

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Oak savanna occurred in Iowa until the time of settlement and then was degraded rapidly. There were no scientific studies of savanna prior to, or after, settlement, and now no high-quality examples exist within the state. To identify those vascular plants adapted to live in the understory of savanna we examined regional and local flora for species that occurred in both prairie and broken woodland, and for species that occurred m both openings and forest. We then compiled a detailed description of the ecological range of habitats for each of these species. We identified 252 species (39 graminoids, 183 forbs, …

Current Status Of The Plains Pocket Mouse, Perognathus Flavescens, In Iowa, Gregory M. Wilson, John B. Bowles, Justin W. Van Zee

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Published and unpublished accounts of the plains pocket mouse (Perognathus flavescens) were utilized to document the existence of extant populations and to summarize and report additional data about the biology of this state endangered Iowa species. Populations of P. flavescens exist in western (Harrison, Monona, and Plymouth counties) and extreme eastern (adjacent portions of Louisa and Muscatine counties) Iowa, the latter of which represents the eastern-most record for the species in North America. In addition, we document a new locality for P. flavescens from the interior of the state (Benton County). All known populations of P. flavescens in Iowa occur …

Geochemistry Of Buried Midcontinent Rift Volcanic Rocks In Iowa: Data From Well Samples, Karl E. Seifert, Raymond R. Anderson

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

We analyzed welt cores and cuttings from deep wells into Precambrian igneous rocks from five separate pacts of the buried Midcontinent Rife System in Iowa for major and trace elements. A total of 21 samples, 9 cores and 12 cuttings, were analyzed for trace elements by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) and 11 of these, 9 cores and 2 cuttings, were analyzed for major elements by inductively coupled plasma (ICP) analysis.

Book Review - The Unnatural Nature Of Science: Why Science Does Not Make (Common) Sense, David Lopatto Jan 1996

Book Review - The Unnatural Nature Of Science: Why Science Does Not Make (Common) Sense, David Lopatto

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

A distinguished psychologist once wrote that if you wished to understand the history of scientific thought you need a psychologist at your elbow. Lewis Wolpert, Professor of Biology at University College in London, has taken that sentiment further. It seems that if you wish to understand the difference between scientific and nonscientific thinking you should delve deeply into the literature of cognitive psychology. For natural thinking, "ordinary, day-to-day common sense will never give an understanding about the nature of science." Instead, the trained scientist engages in unnatural (i.e., counterintuitive) thinking about a word that defies ordinary experience. In order to …

Effects Of Cultural Factors On Mental Health Care For American Indians Living In New York State, Kathleen Alison Earle Jan 1996

Effects Of Cultural Factors On Mental Health Care For American Indians Living In New York State, Kathleen Alison Earle

Doctoral Dissertations

The literature suggests that American Indians need a unique mental health approach based on different cultural norms. Yet research supporting the existence of cultural differences among American Indian mental health clients is rare.

The hypothesis of this study was that American Indian and White, non-Hispanic mental health care recipients have differences in demographic characteristics, services received, and attitudes which may necessitate an alternative therapeutic approach for American Indians. Research methods were an analysis of a secondary data base and a field study using a questionnaire.

Preliminary analysis identified a difference in rate of mental health services received between all American …

Changes In Self-Sufficiency: A Feminist Approach To Literacy Program Evaluation, Marcia Ann Makris Jan 1996

Changes In Self-Sufficiency: A Feminist Approach To Literacy Program Evaluation, Marcia Ann Makris

Doctoral Dissertations

This research was a follow-up investigation of a federally-funded literacy program which was established to assist its participants to achieve self-sufficiency through employment. The program was designed and implemented in response to the federal legislative law, the Family Support of Act of 1988 (FSA), which mandated that states provide Job Opportunities and Basic Skills (JOBS) programs to "assure that needy families with children obtain the education, training, and employment that will help them avoid long term dependency" and "assist recipients to become self-sufficient." The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of the characteristics of the program that …

Giving Voice To The Spirits: Storytelling In The Service Of Belizean Literacy, Gerald Joseph Kelly Jan 1996

Giving Voice To The Spirits: Storytelling In The Service Of Belizean Literacy, Gerald Joseph Kelly

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines the participation of indigenous storytellers in a textbook project undertaken by Belizean educators. A qualitative study of these narrators, who contributed both traditional stories and personal narratives, extended from February 1991 until February 1996 in Belize's Toledo District. Featured narrators were interviewed and audio-taped by the author throughout this time period, as they contributed their oral lore to the project.

This investigation reveals the complex interrelationships of anthropological salvage and cultural renewal. Certain contemporary scholars decry what they perceive as the limited pastoral dimension of salvage, which may suggest that the true value of traditional stories lies …

The Evolutionary Dimension Within Economic Thought, James Julius Neidhart Jan 1996

The Evolutionary Dimension Within Economic Thought, James Julius Neidhart

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation integrates the concepts of circular causality, emergence, and hierarchical organization through an investigation of the evolutionary dimension within economic thought. The different sections of this dissertation represent complementary perspectives on this theme.

The first chapter introduces the concept of circular causality and the technique of causal diagramming. These tools are used in the second and third chapters to highlight the evolutionary dimension within the history of economic thought. The particular theorists and groups of articles discussed include Adam Smith, Alfred Marshall, the Increasing Returns debates of the 1920's, Gunnar Myrdal, and Nicholas Kaldor. The significance of the Increasing …

Friend Of Government Or Damned Tory: The Creation Of The Loyalist Identity In Revolutionary New Hampshire, 1774-1784, James Leslie Walsh Jan 1996

Friend Of Government Or Damned Tory: The Creation Of The Loyalist Identity In Revolutionary New Hampshire, 1774-1784, James Leslie Walsh

Doctoral Dissertations

The dissertation examines the creation of loyalist identity during the American Revolution. Two distinct identities were fashioned, one by the loyalists themselves and a second competing identity which was created for them by their opponents, the radical faction of the revolutionary movement. Both identities were created consciously and for political or economic motives.

The identity created by the loyalists through their actions and words is to be found in a close reading of the claims filed with the Claims Commission created by Parliament in 1783. The dissertation argues that loyalists self-fashioned an individual political identity, as part of the creation …

Someone's Calling Your Swatch: Youth, Technology And Power, Su-Lyn Tan Jan 1996

Someone's Calling Your Swatch: Youth, Technology And Power, Su-Lyn Tan

Theses : Honours

Common assumptions about youth and youth culture exist in academic, as well as other adult cultures. These assumptions underlie policy decisions, programming choices, and even the way we (as adults) treat youth. This study proposes to examine Singaporean youth and their use of pagers, in terms of Foucauldian theories of power; in an attempt to draw critical attention to these common assumptions. The intention is to explore the ambiguities of such common assumptions as sites of power relations; relations that are inherent to all societies in one way or another. The pager is not a conventional focus for communication research. …

Sacramental Language Ritual In The Poetry Of Louise Erdrich, P. Jane Hafen Jan 1996

Sacramental Language Ritual In The Poetry Of Louise Erdrich, P. Jane Hafen

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

As an intensely personal genre, poetry intimately reveals Louise Erdrich's voice as her well-known fiction does not. Evident in that voice are elements of the mosaic of cultural experiences that comprise Erdrich's life: Catholicism, German ancestry, working class, university education, and Turtle Mountain Chippewa. Erdrich's poetry is her first published work, her own writing without the collaborative effort and editing of her husband, Michael Dorris (Modoc). While some of Erdrich's poems garner their cultural rhetoric from differing points of view and values, most exhibit the variety of experiences that result from marginalization inherent in the omnipresence of race in North …

Recasting Epic Tradition The Dispossessed As Hero In Sandoz's Crazy Horse And Cheyenne Autumn, Lisa R. Lindell Jan 1996

Recasting Epic Tradition The Dispossessed As Hero In Sandoz's Crazy Horse And Cheyenne Autumn, Lisa R. Lindell

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Although Mari Sandoz is perhaps best known for the biography of her Nebraska pioneer father, Old Jules (1935), her two other biographies, Crazy Horse: The Strange Man of the Oglalas (1942) and Cheyenne Autumn (1953), equally convey her distinctive historical vision of the American West. In these two works, Sandoz rewrites traditional epic formula, taking the perspective of the dispossessed Lakotas and Cheyennes and recounting not the growth and expansion of a culture, but its conquest. In spite of material defeat at the hands of dominant white society, her Native American leaders assume heroic stature, striving against all odds to …

The Missouri River Basin On The 1795 Soulard Map A Cartographic Landmark, W. Raymond Wood Jan 1996

The Missouri River Basin On The 1795 Soulard Map A Cartographic Landmark, W. Raymond Wood

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The publication in 1814 of Nicholas Biddle's edition of the explorations of Lewis and Clark was accompanied by a remarkable map. This chart, drafted by Samuel Lewis from an 1810 manuscript map by William Clark, synopsized the expedition's many detailed route maps across the continent, plus significant post-expeditionary information. l This landmark document was the first to portray the Missouri River valley in a realistic configuration, and it set the stage for modern conceptions of the heartland of the continent.

Dan Tries Problem-Based Learning: A Case Study, Harold B. White Iii Jan 1996

Dan Tries Problem-Based Learning: A Case Study, Harold B. White Iii

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Problem-based learning approaches to education often generate justifiable enthusiasm among faculty who have become frustrated with the limitations of traditional lecture-based education. However, faculty contemplating a change to a problem-based format rarely anticipate the many practical difficulties that can destroy one's enthusiasm and create chaos in the classroom. This case study, about the trials and tribulations of a fictional anthropology professor, attempts to alert faculty who are interested in trying the method to some of the unexpected challenges they might encounter.
