An Analysis Of Iodine Deficiency Disorder And Eradication Strategies In The High Atlas Mountains Of Morocco, Elizabeth Anne Oldham, Christopher B. Barrett, Sabah Benjelloun, Brahim Ahanou

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

The population of the Ounein Valley in the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco is at high risk of iodine deficiency. We investigated local children's iodine deficiency and goiterpattems as well as food consumption habits through a household survey. Median urinary iodine content and goiter analysis both reflect moderate iodine deficiency. Total fish consumption has a statistically significant, positive effect on urinary iodine content. Fish consumption, like that of salt, is closely related to market access. Respondents are uniformly unaware of the dietary etiology of goiter. An effective strategy to reduce the high incidence of iodine deficiency disorder among children in …

Communication, Culture And Reproduction: Analysis Of Contraceptive Adoption In Kenya, Lewis Odhiambo Omwanda Jan 1996

Communication, Culture And Reproduction: Analysis Of Contraceptive Adoption In Kenya, Lewis Odhiambo Omwanda

Digitized Theses

This dissertation explored the relationships between social communication, culture and reproductive behaviour. Drawing upon theories of structural and behavioral change, mechanisms of value formation and transformation over time were discussed and used to build upon Lesthaeghe and Surkyn's (1988) postulation linking the ideational system reproductive behaviour. Accordingly, theories that posit reproductive choices in sub-Saharan Africa as primarily rooted in past practices and traditional value systems were questioned and, instead, interactionist bases of reproductive choice were suggested that accord with communication theories of behavioral innovation and social change.;The theories were tested using the 1989 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey data, and …

Executive Summary, Dave Else Jan 1996

Executive Summary, Dave Else

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

Educational technology may be a "fairy godmother" or the "boogy man" depending upon individual teacher understanding of its potential and skill in utilization of new models of teaching and learning. In reality it may be neither. Rather it is an excellent learning tool that holds great promise for expanding the walls of the learning community and meeting the changing needs of future generations.

If we believe information is valuable, and it is, students have access to seemingly limitless information through the World Wide Web and linkages with experts in a variety of fields via e-mail. Some certainly see this technology …

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Recent fieldwork in Argentina has resulted in the recovery of numerous new specimens of palaeothentid marsupials, an important component of the Deseadan-Santacrucian (Oligocene-middle Miocene) mammalian fauna of Patagonia. The 1994 collections include a new genus and species from the early Miocene Pinturas Formation at Estancia La Cafnada and the first complete lower dentition of Acdestis oweni from a locality in the Santa Cruz Formation along the Rio Chalia.

Threads Of Time Handmade Textiles For Weddings In Fez, Morocco, Louise W. Mackie Jan 1996

Threads Of Time Handmade Textiles For Weddings In Fez, Morocco, Louise W. Mackie

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Handmade textiles have been vitally important in many traditional societies where they achieved cultural, symbolic, and economic significance. Yet today, comparatively little urban production survives except in Fez, Morocco, where an astonishing variety of age-old handmade textile traditions exists, based on local demand especially for weddings.

This video documentary provides a rare opportunity to see the making and use of eight different types of fabrics and clothing, to meet artisans, merchants and consumers, and to attend a wedding where handmade fabrics symbolize regional pride. Among the woven, embroidered, and trimming fabrics is one 100m of exceptional international significance. Elaborately patterned …

The Great Cloth Burial At Cahuachi, Nasca Valley, Peru, Elena Phipps Jan 1996

The Great Cloth Burial At Cahuachi, Nasca Valley, Peru, Elena Phipps

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

William Duncan Strong's excavation team, working at the base of the major ceremonial mound at Cahuachi, in the Nasca Valley, on the South Coast of Peru, encountered evidence of a thickly woven plain white cloth (fig.1). His journal entry for September 1, 1952 reads:

Strong was disappointed at the findings of the cut, subsequently referred to as the '''Rag Carpet' site." What he had hoped to find, were richly endowed burials, on the scale of the Paracas Necropolis. What he had actually found was probably the largest single piece of cloth ever woven in the Western Hemisphere, buried at the …
