The Causes And Consequences Of Interactions Between Aboriginal And Non-Aboriginal Primary School Children From The Perspective Of Their Parents, Catherine M. Brennan Jan 1996

The Causes And Consequences Of Interactions Between Aboriginal And Non-Aboriginal Primary School Children From The Perspective Of Their Parents, Catherine M. Brennan

Theses : Honours

Racism is found in all societies but is a particular problem in post-colonial immigrant majority societies where the indigenous population have been dispossessed of their land and experience social injustices. Aboriginal people are the most disadvantaged group in Australian society and despite the current policies of self-determination and cultural pluralism they remain at the bottom of all social indicators. The aim of this study is to examine the causes and consequences of racism against Aboriginal children from the perspective of their parents. To do this a case-study of seven Aboriginal parents with primary school aged children was undertaken to see …

Crime And Punishment: Existential Kenosis And Revelation In The Iconographic Chronotope, Dean M. Britton Jan 1996

Crime And Punishment: Existential Kenosis And Revelation In The Iconographic Chronotope, Dean M. Britton

Theses : Honours

The thesis investigates the notion of an existential dialogism and its relation to the Christian idea of kenosis or descent, which is an emptying of sefthood, and the connections between this and ideas of revelation as expressed in the chronotopes of Orthodox iconography and as they appear in C&P. The thesis argues that in this novel there is a parallelism in the constructions of time and space. The linear chronotope is accompanied by a descending existentialism: that is, the polyphony and dialogism of the novel which relativise discursive personae and propel this sense of descent, are constructed within a language …

Chief Seattle's Speech(Es): Ambivalent Idealizations And Emplacing The Uprooted 'Origin', Paul J. O'Malley Jan 1996

Chief Seattle's Speech(Es): Ambivalent Idealizations And Emplacing The Uprooted 'Origin', Paul J. O'Malley

Theses : Honours

This thesis traces the narcissistic dynamics behind mounting idealizations of a Native American Indian, Chief Seattle, and his renowned speech of 1854. In my work I draw from psychoanalytic, poststructuralist, 'post-colonial', and translation theories, as well as from contemporary Indian scholarship. I develop my own provisional model of what I term "Narcissistic Drift", providing a means of charting the intertextual dynamics driving colonial representations of otherness to converge progressively with stereotypical norms. Where previous Seattle studies have tended to concern themselves with issues of textual 'authenticity', I build on such work to consider how an indigenous speech 'uprooted' from its …

The Development Of Community Mental Health Nursing Services In Western Australia : A History (1950-1995) And Population Profile, Phillip M. Maude

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This descriptive• study discusses the development of community mental health (CMH) in Western Australia (WA) and describes the current practising population of CMH nurses. The study explores literature pertaining to the emergence of the CMH movement and the deinstitutionalisation of the mentally ill. A conceptual framework was developed by adapting Lewin's change theory. CMH nurses practising in WA (n= 130), were invited to participate in the study and were asked to complete a survey questionnaire. This resulted in a 66% response rate (n = 86). Quantitative data was analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Open ended …

A Cross-Cultural Study On Complaint Letters : Australian And Korean, Y. R. Kim Jan 1996

A Cross-Cultural Study On Complaint Letters : Australian And Korean, Y. R. Kim

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The aim of the study is to examine the cross-cultural features of Australian and Korean complaint letters. The point of view adopted is that cultural barriers generate difficulties to producing efficient and successful intercultural communication in addition to linguistic barriers. Although the concept of complaint letters is the same in the two countries, there are difficulties when Australians and Koreans attempt to communicate with the other culture. Firstly the study will explore the validating of the concepts of Korean's four-unit structure (Ki-Sung-Chen-Kyul) and the three unit structure typical of western letter writing (Introduction-Body-Conclusion), and contrast the structures. It posits that …

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis describes an evaluation of Sexual Assault in Families Inc., Perth, Western Australia (the SAIF programme) which offers therapy and counselling to families where one or more of the children have been sexually abused by one of the family members. The purpose of the study was to demonstrate the use of a triangulated qualitative research methodology in order to determine whether the programme is achieving its objectives in terms of service delivery. It adopted a phenomenological approach in which participants were acknowledged as expert informants who were capable of identifying valued aspects of the programme. The participants were twelve …

Bringing Foucault Into Law And Law Into Foucault, Hugh Baxter Jan 1996

Bringing Foucault Into Law And Law Into Foucault, Hugh Baxter

Faculty Scholarship

The announced purpose of Alan Hunt and Gary Wickham 's book Foucault and Law, is "to demonstrate the pertinence of [Michel] Foucault for contemporary issues in legal studies. " In this review essay, I acknowledge the important contributions Hunt and Wickham have made, both in introducing basic Foucaultian concepts to a legal academic audience, and in identifying the defects in Foucault's explicit discussions of law. Yet, I contend, the authors turn too quickly from Foucault's work toward their own new research project, the "sociology of law as governance." Rather than constructing a new subdiscipline of the sociology of law, I …

Prenatal Screening And The Culture Of Motherhood, Lori B. Andrews Jan 1996

Prenatal Screening And The Culture Of Motherhood, Lori B. Andrews

UC Law Journal

Physicians use prenatal genetic tests on pregnant women to gain an increasing amount of information about fetuses before birth. These tests do more than predict the future health of the developing fetuses, however; they transform the culture of motherhood-society's expectations of pregnant women and women's expectations of themselves. Decisions to undergo genetic testing-and control or lack of control over dissemination of the results of testing-affect women's self-image, personal relationships, and how women are judged by institutions such as insurers and employers. This article reviews psychological, anthropological, and sociological research on the impacts of genetic testing and argues that healthcare providers …

Art Speech, Marci A. Hamilton Jan 1996

Art Speech, Marci A. Hamilton

Vanderbilt Law Review

Although many scholars have been in favor of providing first amendment protection for art, no one has offered a justification for its constitutional protection suited to art's singular capacities. Rather, commentators and courts have been inclined to place art under the rubric of general speech, which limits protection to ideas and content. Professor Hamilton argues that art offers significantly more than its content and deserves first amendment protection tailored to its particular potential. Art enables individuals to experience unfamiliar worlds and thereby to gain new perspectives on the prevailing status quo, including the government's. It performs this function without exposing …

Wapato For The People : An Ecological Approach To Understanding The Native American Use Of Sagittaria Latifolia On The Lower Columbia River, Melissa Cole Darby Jan 1996

Wapato For The People : An Ecological Approach To Understanding The Native American Use Of Sagittaria Latifolia On The Lower Columbia River, Melissa Cole Darby

Dissertations and Theses

Sagittaria latifolia Willd. was an important root food and trade commodity for the Indians who lived along the Lower Columbia River in early historic times. This plant was prolific in the extensive wetlands of the Lower Columbia from about the great Cascades to the Kalama River. The tubers of this plant were called "wapato" in Chinook Jargon, the local trade language. The wetlands, and this plant that grew there, occupied a vast extent of the Lower Columbia territory; so much so that this valley was named 'Wapato Valley' by Lewis and Clark in 1805. This thesis will provide pertinent information …

Where Have All The Ideophones Gone? The Death Of A Word Category In Zulu, George Tucker Childs Jan 1996

Where Have All The Ideophones Gone? The Death Of A Word Category In Zulu, George Tucker Childs

Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The first step in the discussion is to demonstrate that ideophones constitute a word class, a relatively uncontroversial claim for Southern Bantu. The second is to show that native speakers of Zulu do not share equal knowledge of ideophones and how this knowledge correlates with social factors. Measured knowledge of ideophones is evaluated against the social factors of age, sex, education, residence patterns, and rusticity, a parameter to be elaborated below. The conclusion is that just as for pidgins and creoles (Childs 1994) the knowledge and use of ideophones serves as a reliable barometer for language typing and language change, …

The Stranglehold Of The Serpent: Myths In Comparison, Aaron C. Niderost Jan 1996

The Stranglehold Of The Serpent: Myths In Comparison, Aaron C. Niderost

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

To accomplish an analysis of the meaning of the snake in two distinctly different cultures, I have chosen to illustrate and compare snake myths and symbolism in Western folklore, literature, religion (The Bible and Christianity) and psychology with those myths and symbols of snakes in what we might call non-Western cultures. In these non-Western cultures (specifically the Yurok culture of Northwestern California), data will be derived from the analysis of mythology, literature, religion and specific anthropological ethnographies. Furthermore, I will elucidate the role that education plays in the respective cultures in proliferating and propagating these myths. An analysis of the …
