The Ambassadors: Indigenous Democracy And American Monarchy After The War Of 1812, Zachary Conn Oct 2022

The Ambassadors: Indigenous Democracy And American Monarchy After The War Of 1812, Zachary Conn

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation investigates sites of state activity in the early United States which have received far less attention from historians than executive mansions, legislative halls, courtrooms, military outposts, or overseas embassies: the numerous embassies the federal government maintained on, or adjacent to, lands belonging to North America’s sovereign Indigenous polities. At the helm of each of these embassies, known as Indian agencies, sat a presidentially appointed ambassador known as the Indian agent. I argue that Indian agents were monarchical officers within a republican system, compelled to follow diplomatic scripts originating in the centuries of contact between European monarchies and Indigenous …

The Origin Of The Modern Bird Skull, With A Focus On The Evolution And Embryonic Development Of Musculoskeletal Structures In The Temporal And Otic Regions, Michael Hanson Oct 2022

The Origin Of The Modern Bird Skull, With A Focus On The Evolution And Embryonic Development Of Musculoskeletal Structures In The Temporal And Otic Regions, Michael Hanson

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Compared with their Mesozoic theropod ancestors, extant birds (Aves) exhibit extensively modified skulls and associated soft tissue, with massively enlarged brains and reduced temporal musculature, an inner ear with dorsally elongated semicircular canals, and cranial kinesis allowing independent beak movements that permit it to be a dexterous manipulatory organ. This kinetic system in turn occurs in two distinct forms—palaeognathous and neognathous, the latter having a novel joint in the palate. Through µCT scanning and confocal microscopy, the evolution and development of these skull modifications can now be explored in three dimensions. I digitally reconstructed 3D skulls of two Cretaceous toothed …

Bachahs, Murats, And ShāKhs: The Culture Of Same-Sex Desire In Afghanistan, Ali Abdi Oct 2022

Bachahs, Murats, And ShāKhs: The Culture Of Same-Sex Desire In Afghanistan, Ali Abdi

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation is an introduction to the culture of same-sex desire in Afghanistan and aims at understanding how (non-normative) gender and sexuality materialize in everyday social relations in Kabul. I conducted ethnographic fieldwork in Kabul (and, for a much shorter period, in Bamyan and Mazar-i-Sharif) between 2016 and 2021. The main population with whom I worked were a group of male-born, non-masculine dancers and sex-workers who used murat for self-identification, a term they had borrowed from the argot of hijras/khwaja siras in Pakistan. By examining the formation of the queer subjectivity of murats, I suggest that the sex/gender world in …

The Book Of Forgetting: Oblivion And Erasure In Late Medieval England, Clara Wild Oct 2022

The Book Of Forgetting: Oblivion And Erasure In Late Medieval England, Clara Wild

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Over the past few decades, the role of memory in medieval societies and texts has beendetailed by numerous scholars. Forgetting has received much less attention. This project investigates positive portrayals of forgetfulness in medieval texts from fourteenth and fifteenth century England. These texts range from devotional texts such as The Cloud of Unknowing to romances such as Ywain. Although very different in aims and audience, these texts all contain moments in which forgetting rather than remembering is desired. Through these diverse texts, I seek to demonstrate some of the different functions and forms of forgetting. Whether in the mechanics of …

"Unable To Find Any Trace Of Her": Black Women, Genealogies Of Escape, And Alabama Prisons, 1920 - 1950, Micah Grace Khater Oct 2022

"Unable To Find Any Trace Of Her": Black Women, Genealogies Of Escape, And Alabama Prisons, 1920 - 1950, Micah Grace Khater

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This is a history of Black women’s experiences within, around, and outside of the perimeters of the southern carceral regime. Through an expansive case study of Alabama through the post-World War I moment, the interwar years, the Great Depression, Great Migration, the New Deal, and the infrastructural modernization in the post-World War II moment, this dissertation examines the relationship that carcerality forged between space and time. From penitentiaries, penal camps, and jails, incarcerated Black women challenged the boundaries of carcerality in the rural and urban South. In response, the state ritualized recapture as a mode of epistemological, ontological, and genealogical …

Ancient Andean Archipelagos: Human Interaction And Social Innovation At Chawin Punta And Kunturay In The East-Central Highlands Of Pasco, Peru, Nicholas E. Brown Oct 2022

Ancient Andean Archipelagos: Human Interaction And Social Innovation At Chawin Punta And Kunturay In The East-Central Highlands Of Pasco, Peru, Nicholas E. Brown

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation studies the dynamic relationship between interaction and innovation in ancient Peru, where archipelagos of social movement developed among groups of people living in distant regions of the Central Andes and Amazon. The earliest development of these archipelagic societies can be traced to the rise of the Chavín phenomenon in the 2nd and 1st millennia B.C.E., when monumental platforms and plazas were built across the Andes to accommodate large gatherings of people for new kinds of civic and ceremonial events. Although the people who gathered at Chavin monuments had different cultural backgrounds and geographic origins, their collective experiences forged …

Otherfathering And Black Men’S Mental Health: A Primer For Counselors, Michael D. Hannon Oct 2022

Otherfathering And Black Men’S Mental Health: A Primer For Counselors, Michael D. Hannon

Department of Counseling Scholarship and Creative Works

No counseling research exists about how otherfathering affects Black men’s wellness. Black otherfathering has been primarily studied in schools as one of many expectations for Black male teachers. A review of research about the relationship between fathering, otherfathering, and mental health in Black men is presented and concludes with a rationale for more research about Black otherfathering as a potential protective factor for Black men’s mental health.

Looking Back To Look Forward: 5g/Covid-19 Conspiracies And The Long History Of Infrastructural Fears, Jordan Frith, Scott Campbell, Leah Komen Oct 2022

Looking Back To Look Forward: 5g/Covid-19 Conspiracies And The Long History Of Infrastructural Fears, Jordan Frith, Scott Campbell, Leah Komen

Publications

Almost as soon as the COVID-19 pandemic began spreading throughout much of the world, conspiracies arose that blamed the virus on the deployment of fifth-generation cellular networks (5G) infrastructure. These conspiracies had significant consequences, including protests against 5G and the destruction of 5G infrastructure. This article uses a media genealogy approach to place the 5G/COVID-19 conspiracies within the long and recurring cycle of conspiracies focused on mobile infrastructure. Placed within that broader history, this article argues that the 5G/COVID-19 conspiracies should have been unsurprising, and these types of infrastructural conspiracies should be a more significant part of mobile media and …

Confronting State Violence: Lessons From India's Farmer Protests, Smita Narula Oct 2022

Confronting State Violence: Lessons From India's Farmer Protests, Smita Narula

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

In December 2021, following a year of sustained mass protests, farmers in India forced the repeal of three controversial Farm Laws that attempted to deregulate India’s agricultural sector in service of corporate interests. Farmers feared that the laws would dismantle price supports for key crops, jeopardize their livelihoods, and facilitate a corporate takeover of India’s agrarian economy. This Article situates India’s historic farmer protests in the context of the country’s longstanding agrarian crisis and the corporate capture of agriculture worldwide. I argue that the protests arose in response not only to the Farm Laws, but also to decades of state-sponsored …

Exploring African American Male Youth’S Perceptions Of Community Involvement Through 4-H Programs, Maurice Smith, Nicole Webster, Roshan Nayak Oct 2022

Exploring African American Male Youth’S Perceptions Of Community Involvement Through 4-H Programs, Maurice Smith, Nicole Webster, Roshan Nayak

Journal of Youth Development

Civic engagement research suggests that youths’ involvement in their communities results in a number of positive personal and social attributes. However, among urban populations, there is still a dearth of research on their involvement and the impact of civic participation on their development. More importantly within these populations, there is limited understanding of how Black male youth engage within civic participatory spaces. Increasing but limited research on young Black male youth usually focuses on identity, participation in programs, and socioeconomic levels. Further understanding is needed as to the factors which influence and impact Black male youths’ interests and actual participation …

Is Digitization Enough?: Evaluating The Effects Of Digitization On Researcher Engagement With A Photographic Collection At An Academic Archive, Katherine E. Conley Oct 2022

Is Digitization Enough?: Evaluating The Effects Of Digitization On Researcher Engagement With A Photographic Collection At An Academic Archive, Katherine E. Conley

Museum Studies Theses

The topic of collection digitization at academic archives have been of particular interest to archivists over the last decade. In today’s increasingly digital world, expectations for accessible online content have outpaced the efforts of academic archives to meet the demands of online researchers. It has become obvious that for academic archives and their photographic collections to reach desired audiences and maintain academic impact, archivists and their institutions must redirect their focus to producing accessible digitized content. However, recent research in library sciences and museum studies reveals that digitization alone is not enough. Various efforts must be made in conjunction with …

Barriers To Student Engagement With Waste Diversion: Recycling And Composting Practices On The University Of Denver Campus, Izzy Beltran, Madeline Bonner, Dan Oxendine, Jason Tipler, Jules Mello, Tommy Dainko

Anthropology: Undergraduate Student Scholarship

This project sought to investigate barriers, facilitators, and behavioral patterns related to waste diversion on the University of Denver (DU) campus. In general, waste diversion can be defined as the methods of disposing of waste that prevent it from being deposited in a landfill. At the University of Denver, waste diversion is achieved primarily through recycling and composting. It is these two methods that our report will focus on.

Contemporary Legacies Of Morocco’S Gnawa Music Communities, Luke Sheppard Oct 2022

Contemporary Legacies Of Morocco’S Gnawa Music Communities, Luke Sheppard

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Despite existing literature about Gnawa music and culture, there remains many discrepancies and holes a part of current understandings about the subject. This paper examines the existing literature in comparison with two site visits to different Gnawa music houses in Tangier and Khamlia Morocco. These visits including three interviews with musicians inform an understanding of the history, tourism, spirituality, performance aspects, and changing culture among the two distinct communities. The paper will draw upon these findings to evaluate what it currently means to be Gnawa, perform Gnawa, and spectate Gnawa performance in Morocco. Additionally, Gnawa music within the black Moroccan …

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Mapuche silver jewelry (rüxan) is one of the best known symbols of the Mapuche people and is an important aspect of their history and cultural tradition. Silver jewelry production reached its peak in the mid-19th century, but declined drastically with the Chilean invasion and annexation of Mapuche territory in 1883. Despite this loss, Mapuche rüxan and rüxafes (silversmiths) exist to this day.

I analyzed the modern use and relevance of mapuche jewelry to understand why this tradition has survived the repression and poverty the mapuche people have faced. I asked the question: What are the roles of silverware in the …

“For A Better Future”: The Impact Of Labor Migration On Families In Samoa, Rebekah Underwood Oct 2022

“For A Better Future”: The Impact Of Labor Migration On Families In Samoa, Rebekah Underwood

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This research sought to investigate the motivations, benefits, and consequences of international labor migration on Samoan families. Seasonal worker schemes in New Zealand and Australia were generally found to be beneficial to families given the tangible and material benefits it provided to them. The benefits of remittances were found to have been multiplied through investment in the village of Poutasi to increase industry and job opportunities. A lack of economic opportunity in Samoa was implicated in the motivation and beneficiality of participation in labor schemes and may have increased due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. Family was at the forefront of …

‘Too Shy To Talk About This Topic’: The Impacts Of Gender Conceptions On The Embodied Sexual Experiences And Perceptions Of Urban Vietnamese Students In Ho Chi Minh City, Lily Kafka

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This paper aims to articulate how ‘traditional’ gender roles are resisted, conformed to, and changed among youth within the context of Vietnam’s emerging market economy and consumer culture. Thus, a comprehensive understanding of how gender conceptions have progressed throughout Vietnamese history was a significant portion of my research. The data collection consisted of qualitative data through online surveys and in-depth interviews to understand the impacts of Vietnamese gender conceptions on the embodied sexual experiences and perceptions of university students in Ho Chi Minh City. My findings suggest that contemporary Vietnamese youth, specifically students residing in Ho Chi Minh City, are …

Changes In Identity: How Mongolian Musicians And Performers Have Responded To Geopolitical Transition, Heather Cook Oct 2022

Changes In Identity: How Mongolian Musicians And Performers Have Responded To Geopolitical Transition, Heather Cook

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

During Mongolia’s socialist period, traditional forms of Mongolian music were deliberately altered as the government, heavily influenced by the Soviet Union, attempted to modernize Mongolian culture. Throughout this period, traditional instruments were modified, the types of music that could be performed were strictly censored, and the structure of performances was set to strictly mimic those of Western orchestras. After Mongolia’s Democratic Revolution of 1990, the artistic freedom of Mongolian musicians has greatly increased, but even now, socialist cultural policies are deeply intertwined with Mongolian musical culture. Why is this the case? What is the common perception among performers about the …

Retracing Revolutionary Footsteps: The Legacy Of The People’S War In The Maoist Heartlands, Katherine Coetzer

In 1996, Nepal was engulfed in a civil war when the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) – hereafter referred to a— launched a guerilla war against the state. In historical and political scholarship on the conflict, there has been a tendency to situate the conflict with a neat set of causes and consequences. In focusing on the macroscale changes, such narrations of “Big History” obscure the experiences of the Nepali people who were—and continue to be— impacted by war with the loss and violence endured clinically tallied in human right reports and social science studies. Within rigid analyses, the variegated …

Off-Reservation Treaty Hunting Rights, The Restatement, And The Stevens Treaties, Ann E. Tweedy Oct 2022

Off-Reservation Treaty Hunting Rights, The Restatement, And The Stevens Treaties, Ann E. Tweedy

Washington Law Review

The underdevelopment of the law of off-reservation treaty hunting and gathering poses challenges for treatises like the groundbreaking Restatement of the Law of American Indians (“Restatement”). With particular attention to sections 83 and 6 of the Restatement, this Article explores those challenges and offers some solutions for dealing with them in subsequent editions of the Restatement. Specifically, this Article explores the potential usefulness of historical law in interpreting treaties, the need to tie treaty interpretation to the language of the treaty when an explicit right is at issue, the proper application of the reserved rights doctrine and the Indian canons, …
