Host Community Perceptions Of Tourism's Impacts: A Cluster Analysis, Tim Schroeder Jan 1992

Host Community Perceptions Of Tourism's Impacts: A Cluster Analysis, Tim Schroeder

Visions in Leisure and Business

Tourism has been seen as a positive force in the economic well-being of many rural areas, but in recent years many local residents are starting to question whether the negative impacts of tourism on the physical and social environment are justified by the economic gains. The purpose of this study was to cluster host community respondents to a-survey on perceptions of tourism's impacts into several "types" based upon their patterns of response.

Issues In Rural Community Tourism Development, Thomas D. Potts, Kenneth F. Backman, Muzaffer Uysal, Sheila J. Backman

Visions in Leisure and Business

Policy makers are turning to tourism as a potential industry force that may bring both economic and demographic stability to American rural communities. The systematic planning and appropriate utilization of community related physical, economic, and socio-cultural attributes is the key to the establishment of sustainable tourism. This paper focuses on several issues that are increasingly recognized as critical factors in the community system. Both quality of life and sense of place are emphasized. The paper concludes with broadly defined guidelines for future planning toward sustainable development.

An Examination Of Loyalty In Site Selection For Resort-Based Business Retreats, Russell E. Brayley Jan 1992

An Examination Of Loyalty In Site Selection For Resort-Based Business Retreats, Russell E. Brayley

Visions in Leisure and Business

Business groups holding off-site meetings and company retreats represent a large and important market for resort operators. To attract business group guests, human and financial resources must be expended. This expenditure can be reduced by developing a loyal base of corporate clients. This study helps in the identification of types of businesses that have a greater propensity to be loyal to a resort setting when selecting a site for a business retreat.

A Strategic Planning Approach To Tourism Development In Rural Communities, Stephen M. Holland, John C. Crotts Jan 1992

A Strategic Planning Approach To Tourism Development In Rural Communities, Stephen M. Holland, John C. Crotts

Visions in Leisure and Business

Rural tourism planners have called for more consideration to be given to potential social and environmental costs associated with tourism development. This paper demonstrates a process of developing a tourism strategic plan with goals consistent with the limitations imposed by the social and environmental conditions of the destination area. It outlines the seven sequential steps of a rural tourism planning approach. A strategic planning process of inventorying attractions, competitive analysis, assimilating resident, business leader and natural resource advocate input, using a Delphi approach to work toward consensus, testing ideas with potential or existing tourists and monitoring quality of life and …

Information's Effects On Residents' Perception Of Tourism Development, Carolyn Robertson, John C. Crotts Jan 1992

Information's Effects On Residents' Perception Of Tourism Development, Carolyn Robertson, John C. Crotts

Visions in Leisure and Business

Resident support for existing and future tourism development is an important issue facing tourism managers. This study addressed the relative influence of a public relations campaign on the attitudes of residents towards tourism development. Two random samples were drawn from two comparable Florida counties. Analysis revealed that, on average, residents of the community with a public relations campaign had more positive attitudes toward tourism development than did residents of the community with no campaign. Implications for future tourism public relations campaigns are discussed.

The Application Of Systematic Survey Methods At Open Access Special Events And Festivals, Lynn S. Ralston, Julia A. Hamilton Jan 1992

The Application Of Systematic Survey Methods At Open Access Special Events And Festivals, Lynn S. Ralston, Julia A. Hamilton

Visions in Leisure and Business

Conducting visitor information studies at special events can provide event planners with indispensable planning information. A lack of sound methodological guidelines has served as an historical barrier. This paper outlines a method for gathering statistically sound samples, and emphasizes the importance of using multiple methods of data collection to increase confidence in the results. Use of these methods are applicable for resort destinations, attractions, special events, or festivals; with or without gated entrances.

Information Search Behaviors Of Free And Independent Travels, John C. Crotts Jan 1992

Information Search Behaviors Of Free And Independent Travels, John C. Crotts

Visions in Leisure and Business

The purpose of this study was to describe the extent to which visitors to a historic attraction acquired information in their vacation deliberations and the degree to which their trip characteristics could be used to discriminate between levels of active and passive information seekers. In this data set, respondents who sought out and used information in their trip planning significantly differed from their passive counterparts in terms of their travel decision making. Active groups of information seekers tended to evaluate more alternatives, traveled greater distances, and had limited prior experience with the attraction as compared to their more passive counterparts. …

Methyl Jasmonate Inhibition Of Root Growth And Induction Of A Leaf Protein Are Decreased In An Arabidopsis Thaliana Mutant, Paul E. Staswick, Wenpei Su, Stephen H. Howell Jan 1992

Methyl Jasmonate Inhibition Of Root Growth And Induction Of A Leaf Protein Are Decreased In An Arabidopsis Thaliana Mutant, Paul E. Staswick, Wenpei Su, Stephen H. Howell

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Jasmonic acid and its methyl ester, methyl jasmonate (MeJA), are plant signaling molecules that affect plant growth and gene expression. Primary root growth of wild-type Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings was inhibited 50% when seedlings were grown on agar medium containing 0.1 μM MeJA. An ethyl methanesulfonate mutant (jar1) with decreased sensitivity to MeJA inhibition of root elongation was isolated and characterized. Genetic data indicated the trait was recessive and controlled by a single Mendelian factor. MeJA induced polypeptides were detected in Arabidopsis leaves by antiserum to a MeJA-inducible vegetative storage protein from soybean. The induction of these proteins by …

Historical/Analytical Study Of The Contributions Of Alma E. Mckibbin To The Seventh-Day Adventist Church School System, Marie Louise Myers Jan 1992

Historical/Analytical Study Of The Contributions Of Alma E. Mckibbin To The Seventh-Day Adventist Church School System, Marie Louise Myers

Dissertations

"If we don’t understand our roots, we lose sight of our mission" (G. Ralph Thompson). Alma E. McKibbin, the first Seventh-day Adventist church school teacher in California, is little known among Seventh-day Adventists outside that state, where she began teaching in 1896. She developed a Bible curriculum that was used for over half a century in the Seventh-day Adventist church school educational system—a private, religious, parochial organization of over four thousand schools all around the world.

The purpose of this study is to document the contributions she made to that system, with a special emphasis given to the analysis and …

The Student, The Teacher, And The Text : An Ethnography Of The Literary Acculturation Process In Three Undergraduate Literature Classrooms, Matthew Justice Quartey Jan 1992

The Student, The Teacher, And The Text : An Ethnography Of The Literary Acculturation Process In Three Undergraduate Literature Classrooms, Matthew Justice Quartey

Dissertations

In this study I describe the context and environment in which students in three undergraduate literature classrooms in a mid-western parochial university "acquired a sense of literature," as well as the role played by their teachers in the process. As qualitative research, the study seeks to provide additional insight and understanding of the process of acquiring literary competence. While participant observation and interview were the principal methods used in gathering data, the data also included the use of documents. I examined course syllabi, students' journals, students' written work, and school documents. I also observed each of the three classes at …

A Comparative Study Of The Effects Of Learning Style Prescriptions And/Or Modality-Based Instruction On The Spelling Achievement Of Fifth-Grade Students, Nancy D'Isa Turner Jan 1992

A Comparative Study Of The Effects Of Learning Style Prescriptions And/Or Modality-Based Instruction On The Spelling Achievement Of Fifth-Grade Students, Nancy D'Isa Turner

Dissertations

Problem

Learning style has been studied extensively across the United States since the early 1970s. Much research has involved Rita and Kenneth Dunns' model and associated Learning Style Inventory. In 1991, Robert Zenhausern developed the Homework Disc software program which correlates with the Dunns' work and yields learning style prescriptions for students. The use of these study strategies at the elementary level has not been broadly examined. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of prescriptions on spelling achievement of fifth-grade students.

Method

A total of 65 students (33 males, 32 females) in three intact groups participated in this study. The …

Synthesis Study On Use Of Concrete Recycled From Pavement And Building Rubble In The Indiana Highway System, Thomas T. Burke, Menashi D. Cohen, Charles F. Scholer Jan 1992

Synthesis Study On Use Of Concrete Recycled From Pavement And Building Rubble In The Indiana Highway System, Thomas T. Burke, Menashi D. Cohen, Charles F. Scholer

JTRP Technical Reports

The demolition of buildings and highway pavements in the State of Indiana generates a considerable amount of waste materials. The disposal of these materials causes strain on the existing landfills which are rapidly approaching their full capacity. This study is a synthesis of the information on the use of concrete recycled from pavements and building rubble for use in the Indiana highway system. Test results have shown that recycled pavement concrete made chiefly from broken-up and crushed old concrete aggregate is as good as concrete made from virgin aggregate, and sometimes better. The aggregates made from recycled concrete can be …

Self Concept And Family Relations Of American-Lebanese Children: A Descriptive And Comparative Study, Tagrid T. Chartouni Jan 1992

Self Concept And Family Relations Of American-Lebanese Children: A Descriptive And Comparative Study, Tagrid T. Chartouni

Dissertations

Problem. There is a great current need to assist and understand American children, especially minorities, through their familial and cultural backgrounds. The purpose of the study was to examine the Kinetic Family Drawings of American-Lebanese children to gain information about their relationship with other family members while comparing them with American-Caucasian children.

Method. The Kinetic Family Drawing was administered to 150 American-Lebanese, and 150 American-Caucasian, age 4-17, through Christian church-activities in Connecticut and Massachusetts. The data were analyzed by t-tests and analysis of variance.

Results. (1) There are few differences between the family drawings of American-Lebanese males and females either …
