The problem addressed by this study is how a large urban water district can best respond to a drought or the prospect of a drought. Specifically, what is the least cost combination of alternatives to meet periodic shortages? A solution to this problem may involve structural approaches (such as developing new local storage capacity), a mix of structural and nonstructural (such as conjunctive use combined with water exchanges or sales), or purely nonstructural approaches (such as changes in water pricing). Summary: Ten normal female subjects produced syllables at 5 dB increments from soft to loud. The differentiated electroglottogram (dEGG) open and speed quotients were compared to similar quotients from the inverse-filtered airflow waveform. The latter were measured according to objective and subjective criteria. The data indicate that the open quotient from the airflow waveform decreased as the intensity increased. The dEGG open quotient did not demonstrate this trend. The speed quotient from airflow increased initially with vocal intensity and decreased again as the intensity ceiling was approached. This thesis assesses the feasibility of utilizing a hypercube interconnect topology to link a heterogeneous processor array in a very long instruction word (VLIW) computer architecture. The research focused upon the selection of a suitable arrangement of processors for the computer and the subsequent demonstration of the architecture's capability to handle simple loop iterations. Previous attempts at VLIW computer design are summarized, the new SMIMD architecture is presented, and suggestions for future research are given. The thesis concludes with results of the initial performance evaluations of the architecture design.

A Paleoenvironmental Analysis Based On Ostracode Assemblages From The Late Pliocene Tuapaktushak And Middle Pleistocene Karmuk Members Of The Gubik Formation Of The Arctic Coastal Plain, Western Alaska, D. E. Loehrke

This study records and analyzes ostracode assemblages recovered from sediments assigned to the Late Pliocene Tuapaktushak and Middle Pleistocene Karmuk members of the Gubik Formation in the Skull Cliff area of the Arctic Coastal Plain in western Alaska. Forty-three species were identified from 47 samples (25 from the Tuapaktushak Member and 23 from the Karmuk Member). Samples were grouped by Q-mode cluster analysis and by member assignment for the purpose of analysis.

Paleoenvironmental analyses of ostracode assemblages representative of each cluster suggest all samples, regardless of cluster membership, were deposited in similar marine environments where water depths were in the …

Typical image processing and computer vision tasks found in industrial, medical, and military applications require real-time solutions. These requirements have motivated the design of many parallel architectures and algorithms. Recently, a new architecture called the reconfigurable mesh has been proposed. This thesis addresses a number of problems in image processing and computer vision on reconfigurable meshes.

The distribution of nutrient flux in five sections across the Gulf Stream (from the Florida Straits of 35°W) is characterized by an intense core, centered at the depth of the 26.8 σ_t isopycnal surface. This 'Nutrient Stream' transports nutrients of O(10³ kmol s^-1} of nitrate and proportional amounts of other nutrients. Water mass and nutrient balances of nine isopycnal layers reveal significant diapycnal mixing between upper-thermocline and surface waters in the sector of the Stream between the Florida Straits and the Mid-Atlantic Bight. A two-box model of the nutrient-depleted surface layers (σ_t < 26.8) and the nutrient-rich thermocline layers (26.8< σ_t < 27.5) shows upward one-way transfer and two-way exchange, both at a a rate at about 1.m²s …

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of two career counseling interventions upon the career decision-making self-efficacy of two groups of undecided high school seniors. The setting of the study was a large public high school in a metropolitan area in the Southeastern region of the United States. In order to identify students' initial levels of confidence and certainty for making career and educational plans, a brief self-report survey was administered to seniors. Seniors appearing to possess low levels of confidence and certainty were given the Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy Scale (CDMSES) as a diagnostic screening measure. Forty-eight …

Supernatant proteins in Vibrio alginolyticus batch cultures were analyzed by SDS-PAGE before copper was added, 24 and 48 hours after the addition of copper, and in 24 hour control (no Cu) cultures. Two proteins, one 21 kilodalton (kDa) and one 19 kDa, were found to be copper-induced, and were designated copper-binding protein 1 (CuBP1) and CuBP2. CuBP1 and CuBP2 became detectable in supernatants during the Cu-induced lag phase, and increased in concentration over the following 48 hours. Chloramphenicol inhibited production of these proteins. Gel-to-gel variability was implicated as the dominant factor determining whether one or two Cu-induced proteins were detected …

Essential hypertension is a complex disease which is treated by palliative methods, since the causal factors are as yet unknown. A variety of both genetic and environmental factors probably combine to produce chronic high blood pressure. A genetic model of essential hypertension, spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR), and its control strain Wistar Kyoto (WKY) were used to investigate a possible environmental causal factor, cellular magnesium deficit, and its impact on the functional ability of the calcium ATPase. Scheduling is an essential factor influencing the efficiency of any production system. The effectiveness of the scheduling system depends upon the interaction of the human and machine. Thus, to effectively design the interface between the human and the machine, the human factors professional must understand scheduling behavior and the information requirements of the scheduling task. The present study modeled human scheduling behavior and determined the information requirements of the scheduling task. Hungary is in the midst of a fundamental transformation toward a market economy. Although Hungary has long been in the forefront of efforts to reform socialism itself, after 1989 the goals of reform moved from market socialism toward capitalism, as the old Communist regime lost power and the idea of widespread private ownership gained acceptance. In 1986 the Contracting Parties to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) launched the Uruguay Round of multilateral trade negotiations, the most ambitious round of trade negotiations to date. The Contracting Parties to the GATT agreed in the Punta Del Este Declaration to introduce into the GATT system three new sectors for negotiation: services, trade-related intellectual property rights (TRIPs), and trade-related investment measures (TRIMs). In addition, for the first time in GATT history, the Contracting Parties agreed to devote a negotiating group exclusively to negotiating the tricky aspects of international trade in agricultural products.
