Exact Enumeration And Scaling For Fragmentation Of Percolation Clusters, Boyd F. Edwards, Mark F. Gyure, M. Ferer
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
The fragmentation properties of percolation clusters yield information about their structure. Monte Carlo simulations and exact cluster enumeration for a square bond lattice and exact calculations for the Bethe lattice are used to study the fragmentation probability {ital a}{sub {ital s}}({ital p}) of clusters of mass {ital s} at an occupation probability {ital p} and the likelihood {ital b}{sub {ital s}{prime}{ital s}}({ital p}) that fragmentation of an {ital s} cluster will result in a daughter cluster of mass {ital s}{prime}. Evidence is presented to support the scaling laws {ital a}{sub {ital s}}({ital p}{sub {ital c}}){similar to}{ital s} and {ital b}{sub …

Development And Testing Of A Model And Method For Assessing Effectiveness Of Tourism Promotional Literature, Patrick T. Tierney
Development And Testing Of A Model And Method For Assessing Effectiveness Of Tourism Promotional Literature, Patrick T. Tierney
Visions in Leisure and Business
New models are needed to evaluate the effectiveness of tourism promotional materials, especially that provide insight into causal processes. These types of models seem to be helpful in explaining the influence of promotional material on intent to visit. Findings also suggest that CVG's influence was to reinforce intentions to visit.

Job Announcement Content Analysis In Commercial Recreation And Tourism, John Crossley
Job Announcement Content Analysis In Commercial Recreation And Tourism, John Crossley
Visions in Leisure and Business
The U. S. Department of Commerce projects tourism to become the nation's leading industry by the year 2000 (American Hotel and Motel Association, 1990). Students in commercial recreation and tourism seek honest answers to the proverbial question: "What kinds of jobs are available for me?" There are several ways to answer this, but most of the approaches provide just a partial glimpse of the big picture. Faced with this problem, a content analysis was conducted of every commercial recreation and tourism industry position that was listed in the primary newspaper of a large metropolitan area for an entire year. A …
Disaggregating Seasonal Demand Of A Coastal Resort, H. Leslie Furr, Mark A. Bonn, Edward Seagle
Disaggregating Seasonal Demand Of A Coastal Resort, H. Leslie Furr, Mark A. Bonn, Edward Seagle
Visions in Leisure and Business
Recent national studies document the fact that the lackluster performance in the lodging industry's occupancy rates are directly attributable to the steady growth in the supply of available rooms at a rate that consistently outpaced the demand. Resort area managers who are facing this decade-long reduction in occupancy rates are especially cognizant of the need to revise current market strategies to shield their properties from additional economic fallout that are often triggered by external events. One purpose of the Hilton Head Island Study to determine if a chase demand strategy, where resort capacities are varied with changes in the level …
Vacation Patterns Of Families Who Have A Child With Down's Syndrome, Laura Mclachlin
Vacation Patterns Of Families Who Have A Child With Down's Syndrome, Laura Mclachlin
Visions in Leisure and Business
This study investigated the question "How does a child with Down's syndrome impact family vacation patterns?" Interviews were conducted with 25 families who had at least three children, one of whom had Down's syndrome. Four major conclusions were drawn. First, in the amount of time spent 1n family leisure, vacations were second only to sports-related activities and were equal to television and VCR viewing. Second, camping was identified as the favorite family leisure activity. Third, factors affecting family vacations included time constraints, location of family vacations, lack of recreational opportunities, and physical and/or behavioral problems experienced by the child with …
Recreational Boaters: A Life Style Segmentation Analysis, Thomas D. Potts
Recreational Boaters: A Life Style Segmentation Analysis, Thomas D. Potts
Visions in Leisure and Business
A prevailing hypothesis in recreation scholarship is that a strong relationship exists between leisure choice behavior and life style. In this study boaters in a coastal county were segmented through life style analysis. Twenty-one life style dimensions utilized in previous studies were identified and twice pretested for validity. Of the 21 dimensions, 7 were found to be valid. These seven variables: Community Mindedness, Brand Loyalty, Price Consciousness, Law and Order, Upper Class Sociability, Women's Rights, and Credit User were included in the final survey instrument. Analysis of life style dimension data by K-means clustering resulted 1n a five group segmentation …

Vocational Profile Of Resort Recreation Professionals Based On The 16pf, Charles H. Hammersley, Terry Rivers
Vocational Profile Of Resort Recreation Professionals Based On The 16pf, Charles H. Hammersley, Terry Rivers
Visions in Leisure and Business
Previous research concerning the resort recreation profession have focused on identifying job responsibilities, necessary skills and knowledge (2, 7, 17). while criterion based information is beneficial it overlooks personality, a fundamental and powerful vocational determinant. The current study sampled "resort" members of the Resort and Commercial Recreation Association (N = 224). Using the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF), vocational profiles for male and female resort recreation professionals were identified. Discriminant analysis between Gender and Scores on the 16PF correctly predicted 76% of the overall cases. Since personality is basically stable across an adult's lifetime, and vocational interests are strongly related …
Host Community Perceptions Of Tourism's Impacts: A Cluster Analysis, Tim Schroeder
Host Community Perceptions Of Tourism's Impacts: A Cluster Analysis, Tim Schroeder
Visions in Leisure and Business
Tourism has been seen as a positive force in the economic well-being of many rural areas, but in recent years many local residents are starting to question whether the negative impacts of tourism on the physical and social environment are justified by the economic gains. The purpose of this study was to cluster host community respondents to a-survey on perceptions of tourism's impacts into several "types" based upon their patterns of response.

Issues In Rural Community Tourism Development, Thomas D. Potts, Kenneth F. Backman, Muzaffer Uysal, Sheila J. Backman
Visions in Leisure and Business
Policy makers are turning to tourism as a potential industry force that may bring both economic and demographic stability to American rural communities. The systematic planning and appropriate utilization of community related physical, economic, and socio-cultural attributes is the key to the establishment of sustainable tourism. This paper focuses on several issues that are increasingly recognized as critical factors in the community system. Both quality of life and sense of place are emphasized. The paper concludes with broadly defined guidelines for future planning toward sustainable development.

An Examination Of Loyalty In Site Selection For Resort-Based Business Retreats, Russell E. Brayley
An Examination Of Loyalty In Site Selection For Resort-Based Business Retreats, Russell E. Brayley
Visions in Leisure and Business
Business groups holding off-site meetings and company retreats represent a large and important market for resort operators. To attract business group guests, human and financial resources must be expended. This expenditure can be reduced by developing a loyal base of corporate clients. This study helps in the identification of types of businesses that have a greater propensity to be loyal to a resort setting when selecting a site for a business retreat.
