An experimental study of molten polymer blends was made using the Instron Capillary Rheometer. The materials investigated were two phase blends of non-crystalline polymers (poIymethylmethacrystate-low Mw-polyvinylacetate, polyvinylacetate-polystyrene, polymethylmethacrylate-low Mw-polystyrene, polymethylmethacrylate-high Mw-polystyrene), crystalline polymers (polyethylene-polypropylene) and combinations of non-crystalline-crystalline polymers (polyethylene-polystyrene). Two methods of sample preparation were used, blending of a polymer pair in a molten state by the use of Brabender blender, and a simple manual blending of pellets in desired proportion. The Brabender blended polymer pairs show lower viscosities, this is interpreted molecularly as a result of a reduction of the amount of chain entanglement on shearing of the …

This pulse generator was built to complement the Stroboscope 501, a high speed multi-flash unit capable of producing up to 6000 flashes per second. The Stroboscope is equipped with a electro-mechanical frequency generator, however a solid state pulse generator has the advantages of being highly accurate and repeatable. The basic design criteria were that the generator have several selectable frequencies within the limit of the Stroboscope, be able to count several different amounts of pulses and then close off automatically and be triggerable from an exterior source. A new technique for the calculation of the transient or the steady-state mass flow rate and pressure distribution in incompressible flow networks is presented. Employing the matrix method of network analysis, the nodal continuity and branch momentum equations are solved simultaneously to obtain explicit relations giving the unknown nodal pressures and branch mass flow rates. In this manner, the transient or the steady-state behavior of incompressible flow networks with arbitrary configuration having nodal sources and sinks as well as branch transducers can be determined. Image improvement, through the use of the Fourier transform property of lenses using various frequency blocking filters, was investigated to determine possible utilization of this technique to enhance low contrast fingerprint image characteristics. Ten basic fingerprint patterns were degraded in contrast and then used as the object t(x,y) in an optical spatial filtering setup. A series of frequency blocking filters were used in an effort to improve the degraded object image. Visual comparison of the filtered images obtained by using a double band frequency blocking filter, which produced the most satisfactory images, shows improved overall contrast. Arizona State Route 82 winds through the high country of southern Arizona. Approximately 9½ miles north of the present town of Patagonia, the road makes a sharp 90° turn toward the northeast. At this unmarked turn of the road, today’s casual driver sees the surrounding countryside covered with low-growing oak trees. Intermixed with these are several groves of large trees, some over 100 years in age.

The object of this investigation is to develop and test an apparatus to predict temperature profiles of polymer melts in laminar flow in a heat exchanger, with non-isothermal wall conditions.
A commercial polyethylene melt is pumped at various flow rates through a smooth 0.957 in. I.D. pipe. The entrance temperature of polymer is maintained uniform.
Radially distributed six thermocouples (0.062 in. 0.D.) are placed at 2.5 ft. intervals from the entrance of heat exchanger. Immersion of these probes parallel to the flow direction, reduced the errors due to the conduction of heat from the tube wall to the thermocouple stems. …

The rates of solvolysis of 3-nortricyclyl p-bromobenzenesulfonate (nortricyclyl brosylate) have been determined (at 25.0) in the solvents acetic acid, methanol, and acetic acid and methanol with various small amounts of added water. First order rate constants were obtained by u.v. absorbance, conductometric and titrimetric techniques. All rate constants obtained, with the exception of the titrimetric data, were fairly reproducible and agreed with the previously reported data (where available). Numerical values of m from the Winstein equation: log k/k = mY were calculated from experimental data for solvolysis reactions of nortricyclyl brosylate in each of the solvent sets. These m values …

A normal coordinate analysis of the in-plane vibrations of ethylene was performed using a modified valence force field, a modified Urey-Bradley force field and a hybrid orbital force field. The B2u species of isobutene was also analyzed. An attempt was made to transfer force constants from ethylene and thereby solve the A1 species of isobutene, but a solution could not be obtained. This suggests that simple transference of force constants is not feasable in this case.
The potential energy distributions obtained for ethylene are discussed. The normal coordinates calculated in this work are appended.

The major pollutants that are emitted by jet aircraft include: particulate matter (soot), carbon monoxide, aldehydes, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides. The first of the pollutants, particulate matter (smoke), constitutes not only a visual nuisance but is also a potential health problem. The rest, which are not visible, are irritants and in high enough concentrations can be toxic.

This thesis investigates the lyophilization of pharmaceuticals in vials by conductive heat transfer. The process phase diagram and methods of determining the solution eutectic temperature are reviewed. The theoretical considerations of heat and mass transfer pertaining to this process are discussed.
Lyophilization tests of distilled water and of mannitol solutions are used to indicate the relationship between vacuum chamber total pressure and the product/vial interface temperature. Experiments with 10% lactose solutions are used to determine the effect of shelf fluid temperature, product height and chamber vacuum on product/vial interface temperature. Numerous procedures have been developed for the determination of the value of the minimum reflux ratio for multicomponent mixtures requiring various degrees of computational effort. Shortcut techniques are obviously advantageous with respect to computation time. A major portion of new electric generating capacity will be nuclear powered. The change to nuclear power will require large outlays of capital not required with conventional fuels to finance nuclear fuel inventories. Nuclear fuel financing requirements are unique because nuclear fuel is not consumed in the same manner as conventional fuels. Financing has not been a problem to date because nuclear fuel can be obtained only through lease from the Atomic Energy Commission.
