The Modulation Transfer Function Of The Human Visual System At Selected Spectral Frequencies, George L. Ayers

The Modulation Transfer Function of the human visual system has been determined with a sin usoidal test target, by measuring the threshold contrast as a function of spatial frequency, for monochromatic light of constant average luminace. Data were obtained for a broad band range and wavelengths of 538 and 617 nm. It is shown that a maximum MTF occurs at frequencies between 2 0 - 3 0 cycles/mm on the retina and that this sensitivity decreases for both lower and higher frequencies. The effect of column diameter on the frequency response of water fluidized beds was investigated.
Studies were made on four columns ranging from four to ten inches in diameter. Water was used to fluidize the beds which consisted of spherical glass beads .0185 inches in diameter. A trace solution of sodium chloride was sinusoidally introduced into the beds. Inlet and outlet concentrations were continuously measured by an electrical conductivity recorder. Separate frequency response tests were conducted on the inlet calmning section in an attempt to obtain the frequency response of this region alone. Results of the tests were expressed as …

This study investigates the performance of a 1-inch long 4-vane open impeller centrifugal pump under two phase flow conditions. The paddle wheel pump, as branded by its manufacturer the Worthington Corporation, had a specific speed of 3400 (based on gallons per minute, feet of water and revolutions per minute) corresponding to a 7-inch impeller diameter. A 1/8-inch perforated steel pipe carried the compressed air to within four inches of the impeller eye where the air was injected into the water stream (See figures 18 and 20).

Expressions are found for the fields produced by TM and TEM modes along a finitely conducting biconical antenna. Expressions are also found for the TM and TEM fileds along a biconical antenna having a lossy dielectric coating. It is shown that the antenna losses produce an anntenuation of the the fields along the antenna. It is found that because there is a dispersion of the fields along the biconical antenna, the attenuation produced by the losses is, in genaral, not characterized by simple exponential.

This paper emphasizes a practical approach to the coagulation of domestic waste water. A portion of the paper is a synopsis of current published literature on the subject. Laboratory studies on the coagulation of raw domestic waste waters were conducted to provide the basis of a practical procedure for the evaluation and design of a coagulation process. Studies included the development of a relationship between the B.O.D. and the soluble and solids portion of two waste tests. The jar test was used for the studies on the coagulation process. This thesis demonstrates a method of analog simulation of a Pressurized-Water Reactor (PWR) using simplified techniques. The simulation is for the reactor vessel and is patterned after the "Yankee," the PWR owned and operated by the Yankee Atomic Electric Company of Rowe, Massachusetts, and built by the Westinghouse Corporation of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The entire analysis is based on the one group model (postulated that neutrons in the reactor are of one energy). The areas analyzed are: 1. Reactor kinetics - one delay group 2. A concentric cylinder type cell was designed and constructed tp measure thermal conductivity of liquids. The materials of construction were stainless steel and teflon, so that a wide variety of liquids could be tested.
The systems studied were aqueous solutions of methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, n-propyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, and tertiary-butyl alcohol. Thermal conductivity was studied as a function of composition.
The data obtained were fitted to quadratic equations by least squares analysis. For each system, an equation of the following type was obtained:

In this investigation, the dynamics of a reboiler-condenser pair, with the reboiler operating under condensate control, were analyzed both theoretically and experimentally, and the results of the two analyses compared.
The theoretical analysis was performed using the standard method of Laplace transform transfer function synthesis.
The experimental study consisted of a frequency response analysis of the system response to sinusoidal variations of the steam condensate rejection rate.
Two mathematical models were developed, one quite rigorous but extremely cumbersome, the other neglecting all but the most important factors for the sake of simplicity.

1-bromo-2,2-dimethoxyethane (I) was prepared in 68% yield from the addition of bromine to a solution of vinyl acetate and methanol. A Williamson ether synthesis, using sodium methoxide in methanol and I, gave 1,1,2-trimethoxyethane (II) in 48% yield. The compound (II) was the desired substrate for elimination reactions because it contains poor leaving alkoxide groups.
Many different reactions were investigated to convert II into 1,2-dimethoxyethylene. Among these were pyrolysis, acid catalyzed eliminations, and base initiated elimination reactions.
Best results were obtained using a bomb reactor, compound II as substrate, and potassium t-butoxide as the base. From this reaction, tertiary-butyl methyl ether, …

To test the usefulness of Ektacolor Professional Paper as a pre-press color proofing method, one set of three predictor equations for each of the four primary printing inks was derived relating additive exposures on Ektacolor to colorimetric solid ink densities. These relationship would not yield to simultaneous solution.
Chromaticity coordinates of several sets of solid inks were matched on Ektacolor with an error of 2-10 MacAdam noticeability units. Probably because of the differences in surface characteristics of Ektacolor and newsprint, a visual match was not achieved.

An experiment is described whose objective was to determine a set of alphanumeric characters of equal recognizability. Constraints were that the characters be similar in aspect ratio to the conventional tri-bar target, i.e., 5:1, and that they and the surround have a low density difference. Such a set is described, together with the experimental technique and data analysis used by the present authors to evaluate the set. At an alpha risk of 0.10 the set of characters E S 2 3 8 9 was found to have equal recognizability under two varied viewing conditions.

Concentrations of equilibrium mixtures formed by adding increments of octene to a solution of urea in methanol to form adduct are reported.
Calorimetric studies indicate that the addition of octene to a urea-methanol solution shows an endothermic heat effect prior to the formation of solid adduct. The heat effect becomes exothermic as solid adduct is formed.
Addition of decane to an equilibrium octene-urea adduct system increased octene concentration in the supernatent liquid, indicating an octene release from the original adduct as decane adduct was formed.

Experimental work was undertaken to determine the mechanism controlling the co-deposition of aluminas with copper during electrode-position of copper. The aluminas were present in the copper plating electrolytes as an insoluble disperse phase.
Three possible mechanisms for co-deposition of aluminas were studied, They were mechanical inclusion, electrophoretic deposition, and adsorption.
The results of experimental studies established that mechanical inclusion was not a significant factor in the mechanism controlling co-deposition of aluminas with copper.
Theoretical considerations of the compositions of the copper plating electrolytes indicated that co-deposition of aluminas by an electrophoretic mechanism was highly unlikely. The conclusions arrived at by …
