Mathematical Modeling Of Mass Transfer In A Hollow Fiber Dialyzer, Tzyy-Kai Yu

A mathematical model describing the flow characteristics and mass transfer has been developed for the hollow fiber dialyzer in countercurrent dialysis.

The theoretical expressions are developed from a typical Graetz problem for the stream side, and a first order differential equation for the dialyzate side. The solution of the dimensionless concentration profile is obtained as a summation of orthogonal eigenfunctions in closed form, which are given as product of an exponential function and a confluent hypergeometric function.

A resin metering criterion has been developed for processing the prepregs of CTBN-EPOXY resin in which the resin content can be controlled within close tolerances. This criterion was obtained by numerically simulating the flow of CTBN-EPDXY resin in the blade-type metering device at room temperature. The Newtonion case of CTBN-EPOXY resin was selected for the study to avoid dealing with more complicated flow equations. A methodology of using the penalty function/finite element formulation was developed to solve the steady state Navior-Stokes equation.

When a group-incentive system, all participating workers receive the same bonus. Each pay-group establishes a pace which affects under-achievers and over-achievers.

A null hypothesis, that peer pressure has no effect on group incentives and the distribution of workers' efficiencies will fit a normal distribution, was formulated. The chi-square test was used to test the null hypothesis.

The first part of the study examined the effect of group incentives on experienced workers. The chi-square test indicated a highly significient difference between the actual efficiency distribution and the expected normal distribution; therefore, the null hypothesis was rejected. Marker And Cell (MAC) method is utilized for solving the transient flow phenomena, after a mathematical simulation of the flow model is carried out by using the relevant continuity and-momentum equations governing the system. The complexity of the equations involved, results in the simplifying assumption of incompressible and isothermal flow process. A finite element method for solving the entrance flow in a parallel-plate channal at low Reynolds number has been studied. Two methods of formulation for both incompressible viscous and inviscid fluid flows were developed. The first uses stream function and potential function as field variables while the second uses velocity and pressure. Both formulations presented here ultilized variational principle and weighted residual method. A lenticular film system designed to suppress image degrading crossover during dual screen radiographic exposure is proposed and evaluated. The lenticular screen consists of two sheets of crossed cylindrical lenslets each with a frequency of 25 lenslets/mm. A numerical analysis via optical ray tracing compares the theoretical frequency response of the proposed system to that of a conventional radiographic film. It shows an enhancement in the response by a factor of two, for frequencies 1-4 c/mm. CC1F2N0, CC1F2N0, CC1F2N02 and CC12FN02 were prepared and purified in the laboratory. Three methods for the preparation of chlorodifluoronitrosomethane were evaluated: 1) decarboxylation of the sodium salt of chlorodifluoroacetic acid in the presence of nitrosyl chloride, 2) nitrosation of chlorodifluoromethanesulfenylchoride and 3) photolysis of bromodichlorofluoromethane in the presence of nitric oxide. The vapor phase decarboxylation of the sodium salt of chlorodifluoroacetic acid in the presence of nitrosyl chloride gave chlorodifluoronitrosomethane with the highest yield and purity. Because the sodium salt of dichlofluoroacetic acid was not available to utilize in a similar manner, dichlorofluoronitrosomethane was prepared from the reaction of dichlorofluoromethanesulfenylchloride …

Six mercury cadmium telluride targets (5.74 cm diameter) with six polycrystalline (Hg_0.8 Cd_0.2 )Te ingots (1 x 3 x 0.7 cm ± 20%) epoxied on them, were r.f. sputtered in an MRC-8800 triode system for 1, 2, 3, and 5 minutes. The six sputtering runs were made with 3 different Hg pressures of 1.0, 1.25, and 1.6μm while the uniform target power density was kept constant at 7.7W/cm². The purpose of this thesis work was to provide soft ware in Fortran programming language that will read, print and process data contained on Landsat computer compatible tapes. The programming was done on the Xerox Sigma 9 computer at the Rochester Institute of Technology. The processing involved reading and re-registering fractions of files and performing simple numeric operations on the digital spectral radiance values of individual picture elements. The result was a fraction of a Landsat scene containing pixels that are classified as vegetation, water, mixed elements or invariant features.
