The primary objective of this thesis is to determine and analyze the failure mechanisms of solid tantalum capacitors, pinpoint the causes, and suggest the precautionary measures that prevent the occurrence of these failures. To achieve this goal, the study went in two directions, theoretical and experimental. The theoretical part-is a comprehensive review of the work -done on tantalum capacitors since 1960 up to date.

Volatile organic species (aliphatic hydrocarbons from hexane to dodecane, cyclohexane and aromatic species including benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, m,p, and o—xylenes, nitrobenzene, styrene and naphthalene) associated with residential kerosene heater emissions were measured at two sites. One was a small room having a total volume of 23.66 cubic meters and an air change rate of 2.71 air changes per hour, and the other, a living/dining room area having a combined volume of 79.30 cubic meters and an estimated air change rate of .7 air changes per hour. The following is a research report on the effects of heavy metals on the avian embryo. A total of eight metals were used in the study. The metalE included were : cobalt, copper, indium, iron, manganese, molybdenum, arsenic and cadmium. A total of 800 eggs were used for the study. Salts of each of the metal were dissolved in physiological saline and injected into the air sacs of white Leghorn chick eggs. Dose levels varied with the metal to be tested. Acrylamide causes a peripehral neuropathy. The biochemical mechanism by which it does so is the subject of intense investigation. One of the principal hypotheses for this mechanism centers on acrylamide's ability to inhibit glycolysis. This study examines the effects of in vivo exposure to acrylamide on the enzymes of the nerve terminal particle, the synaptosome.

A method for measuring glycolytic enzyme inhibition in the synaptosome was developed. Acrylamide (500 mg/kg) was administered to rats intraperitoneally. A simplified model of the halftone contact screening system was devised and tested to determine the applicability of the model for predicting frequency transfer characteristics of the system. The model was tested using illuminance sinusoids of varying frequency as input to the halftone system. The output was obtained by optically correlating the exposing sine wave with its halftone image. It was found that the halftone system is capable of transfering information at frequencies greater than the screen frequency, and that the model generally underestimates the ability of the system to reproduce high frequency information, although the basic shape of the …

It is also well established that within the cells of estrogen target organs there are proteins which act as specific receptors and as such bind estrogen against a concentration gradient (1). A spectroradiometer was designed and built to record in vivo absorption characteristics of the lateral elbow. An analysis of variance of spectral characteristics between 400 and 1100 nanometers of faculative melanin to skin types one two and three was performed. The hypothysis that skin type could be differentiate by spectral recordings of in vivo faculative melanin was rejected. Further research is required to correlate constitutional melanin to skin type classification, in order to form a reference for pigmented cutaneous lesion classification.

A photographic shutter was considered, comprised of a mechanically driven, pivoted opening blade and a spring driven, pivoted closing blade which is released by a magnetic holding coil through an armature lever. The magnitude of the viscous drag of air on the closing blade is approximated, and its effect on the travel time (lag time) of the blade is determined to be insignificant. A set of equations is derived representing the dynamic performance of the combination of the closing blade and the armature lever. Millimeter-wave propagation in vegetation (forests) is studied using transport theory. A periodic sequence of gaussian plane wave pulses is assumed to enter a forest. The forest is first modeled as a slab and then treated as a half-space by letting the thickness of the slab go to infinity. The forest is assumed to consist of a random distribution of particles which scatters energy isotropically. The respiratory system was simulated utilizing a series of three models, each more complex than the previous. The first model simulated the respiratory system as a two compartment model driven by carbon dioxide concentration. The second model, also a two compartment model, simulated periodic breathing while the third model is a three compartment model and simulates acid-base balance disturbances.

In this study, the effects of hyperthyroidism and respiratory center depression on respiration premeasured utilizing the models to obtain data and then compare the results to known physiologic data.
