A Faint, Blue Idea Of Order, Philippe Custeau

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Wells Oliver, a mathematician, and his partner Malin move to Kythera, a remote Greek island, from Canada and Sweden, their respective countries of origin. In doing so, they hope to transform their lives in a way that will allow them to focus on their budding love affair, but they are also running away from obligations and people they are trying to leave behind. On Kythera, they realize that even in the most distant locales, the past is never far below the surface.

The Influence Of Flooding On Contributions Of Spartina Alterniflora Roots To Salt Marsh Soil Volume In A Field Setting, Daniel Gill May 2006

The Influence Of Flooding On Contributions Of Spartina Alterniflora Roots To Salt Marsh Soil Volume In A Field Setting, Daniel Gill

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Rapid rates of coastal wetland loss in Louisiana are widely recognized. One important question of wetland sustainability is how volumetric contributions of roots to wetland soils vary under the influence of different hydrologic regimes. The research presented here specifically investigates the spatial and temporal relationships among the specific gravity of live roots, soil chemistry, and flooding regime for the macrophyte Spartina alterniflora Loisel. in natural, salt marsh, field settings located across southeastern coastal Louisiana. The results of this research propose the existence of a stress-tolerance threshold (beyond which root specific gravity modifications are observed), and highlight the importance of micro-scale …

Mothers' Communication Style And The Development Of Child Compliance And Noncompliance During The Third Year Of Life, Sara Sohr-Preston

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Learning to comply with parental commands and requests is an important developmental achievement during toddlerhood. Although more responsive parenting often is associated with increases in children's compliance during the toddler years, the role of mothers' and toddlers' language abilities on change in compliance has largely been ignored. The current study addressed this gap using a sample of low-income, primarily African American mothers and toddlers (N = 55). Two models examining the role of receptive vocabulary were evaluated. First, mothers with higher receptive vocabulary scores were hypothesized to display more warm responsive communication in a teaching situation, which would be related …

Multi-Reference Pseudo-Random Phase-Encoded Joint Transfrom Correlation, Edward Mwatibo Jan 2006

Multi-Reference Pseudo-Random Phase-Encoded Joint Transfrom Correlation, Edward Mwatibo

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

We propose and demonstrate the superiority of using a phase SLM only in a multi-reference phase encoded joint transform correlator(JTC) compared to an ordinary JTC. Maximal length sequences are shifted to form two dimensional orthogonal arrays referred as m-arrays. The phase mask is used in one step to encode multiple reference images and at the same time eliminate false correlation peaks through power spectrum dispersion. A theoretical model of the implemented JTC is mathematically expressed and explained in this thesis. Basic performance criteria, PSR (peak to side lobe ratio) and PCE (peak to correlation energy), are used for comparative analysis, …

Unfortunately, shortly after that survey, Bob Melia passed away without documenting his work or preparing the final report. Based on a review of previous research and modeling related to TIR imaging of subsurface features, I conclude that the high …

Power Signal Analysis Of Channel Current Signal Using Hmm-Em And Time Domain Fsa, Anand Prabhakaran Jan 2006

Power Signal Analysis Of Channel Current Signal Using Hmm-Em And Time Domain Fsa, Anand Prabhakaran

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The Nanopore Detector using á-hemolysin channel transcribes kinetics of a single molecule along the nanometer-scale pore. The transcribed data is represented by electrical measurements. We present accurate and computationally inexpensive tools to analyze single molecule kinetics. The HMM-EM level projection method de-noises data, retaining the transitions with very high precision. This approach doesn't require input number of levels. Another advantage is the minimal tuning required. The levels are then identified using Finite State Automata (FSAs). Spike Detector algorithm analyzes spikes characterizing behavior of molecule in pore. No commercial tools available are capable of analyzing spikes in presence of noise. The …
