Synthesis, Activation And Catalytic Activity Of N-Heterocyclic Carbene Bearing Palladium Catalysts, Oscar Navarro-Fernandez
Synthesis, Activation And Catalytic Activity Of N-Heterocyclic Carbene Bearing Palladium Catalysts, Oscar Navarro-Fernandez
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The syntheses and characterization of a series of (NHC)Pd(II) complexes (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) are described. A variety of architectures and precursors have been employed to lead to numerous air- and moisture-stable complexes. The use of those complexes as pre-catalysts in cross-coupling (Suzuki- Miyaura, Buchwald-Hartwig) and related (catalytic dehalogenation, £-ketone arylation) reactions is also discussed. A comparison of the activity of a variety of (NHC)Pd complexes as pre-catalysts for cross-coupling reactions was carried out. The results indicate that the activation of those pre-catalysts, leading to the catalytically active [(NHC)Pd(0)] species, was key in assuring high catalytic performance under mild reaction …
Synthesis Of Molecular Baskets And Introduction Of Inward Facing Functionality, Zachary Laughery
Synthesis Of Molecular Baskets And Introduction Of Inward Facing Functionality, Zachary Laughery
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
As a first step to producing a shape selective catalysts or enzyme mimic, two preorganized host molecules were synthesized. Binding studies of the two hosts with a variety of guests in three solvents demonstrated that an important driving force in the association was the formation of C-H???X-R hydrogen bonds (X = halogen). A deuterated host was utilized to further examine the formation of the C-H???X-R hydrogen bonds. In an effort to place functionality in the hydrophobic pocket of these hosts, two methods were developed. The first utilized directed ortho metallation to place electrophiles above and/or directed into the cavity. Perlithiation …
Competitive Usability Studies Of Virtual Environments For Shipbuilding, Kurt Satter
Competitive Usability Studies Of Virtual Environments For Shipbuilding, Kurt Satter
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Establishing usability specifications as measurable attributes in repeatable scenarios has been an essential task in the management and continuous improvement processes [1]. Early studies in Usability Analysis were primarily conducted to assist software developers and hardware designers in improving the Human- Computer Interface (HCI) or Man- Machine Interface (MMI). However, this study was conducted to provide comparative data supporting broad conclusions regarding the comparative merits of one technology (nonstereoscopic, conventional CAD systems) competed against another (tracked, stereoscopic virtual environments). Competing environments to establish usability features and preferences provides a new tool to the interface designer. Benchmark scenarios were designed and …
An R*-Tree Based Semi-Dynamic Clustering Method For The Efficient Processing Of Spatial Join In A Shared-Nothing Parallel Database System, Gayatri Ganpaa
An R*-Tree Based Semi-Dynamic Clustering Method For The Efficient Processing Of Spatial Join In A Shared-Nothing Parallel Database System, Gayatri Ganpaa
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The growing importance of geospatial databases has made it essential to perform complex spatial queries efficiently. To achieve acceptable performance levels, database systems have been increasingly required to make use of parallelism. The spatial join is a computationally expensive operator. Efficient implementation of the join operator is, thus, desirable. The work presented in this document attempts to improve the performance of spatial join queries by distributing the data set across several nodes of a cluster and executing queries across these nodes in parallel. This document discusses a new parallel algorithm that implements the spatial join in an efficient manner. This …
Simulating The Affects Of Glutamatergic Afferents On The Firing Pattern Of Midbrain Dopamine Neurons, Richard Spencer Landry Jr.
Simulating The Affects Of Glutamatergic Afferents On The Firing Pattern Of Midbrain Dopamine Neurons, Richard Spencer Landry Jr.
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
A computational model of a midbrain dopamine neuron was extended in this study to include a response to random excitatory afferent input by incorporating the receptor components AMPA and NMDA. In a diagonal band where average glutamatergic and tonic gabaergic input is roughly balanced, both single spike firing and bursting can be observed. Simulated SK channel block strengthens the correlation between pattern and rate and increases the number of spikes fired in bursts by increasing the spikes per burst. A simulated doubling of the AMPA/NMDA ratio leads to a frequency increase that becomes more prominent at high firing rates, and …
The Role Of Emotion In The Aggressive Behavior Of Juvenile Offenders, Katherine Aucoin
The Role Of Emotion In The Aggressive Behavior Of Juvenile Offenders, Katherine Aucoin
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the roles of emotion regulation, negative emotional reactivity, callous-unemotional traits, and socioemotional competence (i.e., identity, self-esteem, communication skills, work orientation, empathy) in overt aggression in a sample of detained juvenile offenders. Clusters were formed based on type and level of overt aggression exhibited: reactive, proactive/reactive, and low aggression. The proactive/reactive distinction failed to provide differential relationships with dependent variables when compared to an overall level of overt aggression. Results indicate that adolescents high in overall overt aggression exhibit higher levels of callousunemotional traits and negative reactivity, as well as lower levels of selfconcept and self-esteem when compared …
Gun Control Policy Preference In Context: A Contextually Sensitive Model Of Gun Control Policy Preferences, Matthew Vile
Gun Control Policy Preference In Context: A Contextually Sensitive Model Of Gun Control Policy Preferences, Matthew Vile
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Using data from the 2000 American National Election Study and the Uniform Crime Reports, this research studies the impact of core values and contextual effects on gun control policy preferences. The research seeks to produce a contextually sensitive model of gun control policy preferences that accounts for the nature of the elite message war regarding the issue of gun control and for both long and short-term contextual factors that might sway individual opinions at the point of stimulus (e.g., the survey question). While the analysis does find conditioning effects, the effects do not conform to the theoretical expectations, and they …

Enhancing Security In 802.11 And 802.1 X Networks With Intrusion Detection, Shoban Pattam
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The convenience and low cost of 802.11-based Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) complemented with 802.1 X authentication has led to widespread deployment in the consumer, industrial and military sectors. The combination of wireless signals radiating further than the intended coverage area, flaws in 802.11's basic security mechanisms and vulnerabilities found in 802.1 X have been widely publicized. Military bases and navy ships are open targets for wireless attacks. Wireless Intrusion Detection System (WIDS), provides an additional (external) layer of security by combining intrusion detection, fire walling, packet filtering and determining the physical location of the intruder.
Business Process Outsourcing: An Exploratory Study, David Johnson
Business Process Outsourcing: An Exploratory Study, David Johnson
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the emergence of Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) in white collar occupations. Recent BPO practices are compared to the offshore outsourcing of production in the context of the shift from Fordist to flexible production. The study considers BPO in light of Harry Braverman's theory of work degradation and whether or not BPO extends the traditional division of labor between conception and execution to higher skilled white collar occupations. An exploratory qualitative approach comprised of informant interviews, a focus group, and literature review was used to analyze how BPO occurs, why it happens, and where it takes place. I …

Smectite/Illite Distribution And Diagenesis In The South Timbalier Area, Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Mark Dixon
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Clays and clay mineral distribution studies are important for understanding the geological history of the Gulf of Mexico Basin, but few studies document any subsurface clay mineral distribution in the Gulf of Mexico. Shale samples from nine wells (30 samples) in the South Timbalier protraction were selected near known paleontological markers identifying the Miocene, Pliocene, and Pleistocene boundaries. Bulk mineralogy of each sample, determined by XRD, is primarily mixed-layer smectite and illite with a minor amount of kaolinite. The mixed-layer mineralogies are end-member smectite, mixed-layer smectite, mixed-layer illite, and end-member illite. These clay mineral fractions do not correlate with age. …

Prototype Digital Forensics Repository, Sonal Mandelecha
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The explosive growth in technology has led to a new league of a crime involving identity theft, stealing trade secrets, malicious virus attacks, hacking of DVD players, etc. The law enforcement community which has been trained to deal with traditional form of crime, is now being trained in a new realm of Digital Forensics. Forensics investigators have realized that often the most valuable resource available to them is experience and knowledge of fellow investigators. But there is seldom an explicit mechanism for disseminating this knowledge. Hence the same problems and mistakes continue to resurface and the same solutions are re-invented. …
Chloroplast Biotechnology In Higher Plants: Expressing Antimicrobial Genes In The Plastid Genome, Tracey Ruhlman
Chloroplast Biotechnology In Higher Plants: Expressing Antimicrobial Genes In The Plastid Genome, Tracey Ruhlman
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
While genetic improvement of susceptible crop species may enhance resistance to microbial pathogens and facilitate reduced pesticide load, the possibility for transmission of novel genes to wild relatives has hampered acceptance of GM crops in some markets. Chloroplast transformation presents an attractive alternative to nuclear transformation and offers the potential to ameliorate these environmental concerns. Most agronomically important species exhibit maternal inheritance of organellar genomes which eliminates the threat of transgene escape through pollen. Gene silencing is absent due to site directed, single copy insertion by homologous recombination. Foreign proteins can accumulate to high levels (up to 50% of total …
Adaptive Estimation And Detection Techniques With Applications, Jifeng Ru
Adaptive Estimation And Detection Techniques With Applications, Jifeng Ru
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Hybrid systems have been identified as one of the main directions in control theory and attracted increasing attention in recent years due to their huge diversity of engineering applications. Multiplemodel (MM) estimation is the state-of-the-art approach to many hybrid estimation problems. Existing MM methods with fixed structure usually perform well for problems that can be handled by a small set of models. However, their performance is limited when the required number of models to achieve a satisfactory accuracy is large due to time evolution of the true mode over a large continuous space. In this research, variable-structure multiple model (VSMM) …

Colonial Legacies And Development Performance In Africa, Stephanie Burchard
Colonial Legacies And Development Performance In Africa, Stephanie Burchard
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
It is often assumed that significant differences existed between Great Britain and France with regards to their respective styles of colonial administration. Some researchers have asserted that this difference in colonial administration has affected post-colonial economic and political development in Africa. This paper offers some theoretical, anecdotal, and econometric evidence questioning the validity of these assumptions. This paper also examines some commonly encountered problems associated with econometric analyses of African development: namely, the availability and reliability of data, and the difficulty in operationalizing and measuring political development in Africa.

Comparing Different Levels Of Interactivity In The Visualization Of Spatio-Temporal Data, Samara Ebinger
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The Internet and other advances in technology have dramatically affected cartography in recent decades and yet these new capabilities have not been adequately evaluated for effectiveness. Are dynamic maps more effective than traditional static paper maps in allowing users to visualize spatio-temporal patterns? How important is a higher level of interactivity in visualizing data? Which format is preferred? To examine these questions, human subject tests were conducted to evaluate different levels of interactivity as represented by 1) a static paper map series; 2) an animated map with 'VCR'-type controls; and 3) a toggle map featuring an interactive temporal legend. Results …

Power System Fault Detection Using Conductor Dynamics, Jeff Dicharry
Power System Fault Detection Using Conductor Dynamics, Jeff Dicharry
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Power system fault detection is conventionally achieved using current and potential measurements. An alternate and unconventional form of protective relaying is feasible using rigid bus conductor motion as the means of detection. The research presented focuses on the detection of power system faults using visual displacement of conductor spans. Substation rigid bus conductor motion is modeled using dual spring-mass systems for accurate representation of conductor response to electromagnetic forces generated during system faults. Bundled rigid conductors have advantages including detection independent of system load currents and improved ability to detect polyphase and single phase faults. The dynamic motion of the …
Determining The Crystal Structure Of Cellulose Iii By Modeling, Zakhia Ford
Determining The Crystal Structure Of Cellulose Iii By Modeling, Zakhia Ford
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Recently, a one-chain monoclinic unit cell for Cellulose IIII having a single glucose in the asymmetric unit was proposed based on high-resolution diffraction patterns. The new work challenged a two-chain structure published 25 years earlier, although it did not provide new three-dimensional coordinates. Our goals were to solve the structure by modeling, find whether modeling would reject the previously determined two-chain unit cell, and compare the model with the anticipated experimental structure. Combinations of the O2, O3, and O6 hydroxyls produced 54 starting structures. Clusters of 13 cellotetraose chains terminated by methyl groups for each of the 54 starting structures …
Electrodisinfection Of Municipal Wastewater Effluent, Mark Peterson
Electrodisinfection Of Municipal Wastewater Effluent, Mark Peterson
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
To avoid the spread of disease from sewage treatment effluents, pathogenic microorganisms present must be destroyed by one or a combination of disinfection methods. Chlorine remains the predominant disinfectant used although it consumes considerable amounts of energy and has associated exposure risks from production, transportation and storage of this poisonous gas. In addition to bacteria and other objectionable microorganisms, color, suspended and colloidal solids also require removal from water for reuse. Aluminum and iron additions have been used to coagulate and remove non-settleable solids. By electrically dissolving aluminum to form solids-bridging aluminum hydroxide, the water itself can also be disinfected …

Development Of A Laminar Construction Quadrupole Ion Trap, Nagalakshmi Tentu
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The three-dimensional quadrupole ion trap (QIT) is an extraordinary device. It functions both as an ion store in which gaseous ions can be confined for a period of time and as a mass spectrometer of considerable mass range and variable mass resolution. Over the past few decades, it has evolved into a powerful tool for both research and routine analysis. The basic objective of this thesis is the development of a three-dimensional quadrupole ion trap with cylindrical symmetry in laminar approximation. The laminar construction allows hyperbolic geometry to be well approximated with minimal construction effort and also provides more access …

How A Museum Exhibit Functions As A Literacy Event For Viewers, B. A. Chauvin
How A Museum Exhibit Functions As A Literacy Event For Viewers, B. A. Chauvin
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate museum learning by describing the experiences of selected museum visitors who viewed a specified exhibit. The research question is: How does a museum exhibit function as a literacy event for viewers? The responses to interview questions described what viewing was like for two subjects. The paradigm for this research is New Literacy Studies (NLS). NLS considers the cultural issues surrounding literacy experiences. NLS assumes that language arts reflect cultural differences and literacy involves the process of constructing meaning (Barton, Hamilton, & Ivanic, 2000; Gee, 2000; Street, 1995). This model of literacy considers …
Developmental Pathways To Psychopathic Traits In Caucasian And African American Juvenile Offenders, Eva Kimonis
Developmental Pathways To Psychopathic Traits In Caucasian And African American Juvenile Offenders, Eva Kimonis
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
There is a growing body of research suggesting that the presence of psychopathic traits, and more specifically, callous-unemotional traits in youth, may constitute a distinct developmental pathway to aggressive behavior. However, ethnic groups are understudied in this literature such that it is unclear whether the correlates of psychopathic traits (i.e., violence, aggression, emotional processing deficits) are equally associated with these traits across different ethnic groups. Also, most theories on the development of psychopathy have provided biologically-based explanations for the cognitive-affective deficits that are considered to be core features of psychopathy. However, research suggests that exposure to adverse contextual environments is …

Types Of Aggression, Responsiveness To Provocation, And Psychopathic Traits, Luna C. Munoz
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Research on the various subtypes of aggression has documented differences in the experience of anger and the expression of angry aggression. Mixed proactive and reactive aggressive individuals exhibit reactive aggression but, unlike reactive aggressive individuals, fail to exhibit angry expressions or physiological arousal. Similar to the proactive group, individuals with psychopathic traits have been found to exhibit emotional underreactivity, and physiological underarousal, while still exhibiting reactive aggression. The present study examined 85 boys (ages 13 to 18) from a detention center. Three groups of aggressive boys were identified via cluster analysis based on the self-report of types of aggressive behavior: …
