Reducing The Hot Spot Effect In Wireless Sensor Networks With The Use Of Mobile Data Sink, Yacine Chikhi May 2006

Reducing The Hot Spot Effect In Wireless Sensor Networks With The Use Of Mobile Data Sink, Yacine Chikhi

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The Hot Spot effect is an issue that reduces the network lifetime considerably. The network on the field forms a tree structure in which the sink represents the root and the furthest nodes in the perimeter represent the leaves. Each node collects information from the environment and transmits data packets to a "reachable" node towards the sink in a multi-hop fashion. The closest nodes to the sink not only transmit their own packets but also the packets that they receive from "lower" nodes and therefore exhaust their energy reserves and die faster than the rest of the network sensors. We …

The Role Of Venture Capitalists In Monitoring Portfolio Companies, Khaled Khalil Abdou May 2006

The Role Of Venture Capitalists In Monitoring Portfolio Companies, Khaled Khalil Abdou

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Does the role played by venture capitalists add value to their portfolio companies? How do they add value? What are the characteristics of those venture capitalists? Does financial leverage matter for VC-backed companies? All of these questions are researched in this dissertation. The manuscript specifically explores two cases. The first is the role of U.S. venture capitalists after the IPO of their troubled portfolio companies, while the second examines the role of venture capitalists in international investments. The findings detailed in the first part of the study show that a higher level of monitoring and involvement is a significant factor …

A Study Of Carasaurus' (Dinosaura: Sauropodomorph) Torso And Its Biomechanical Implications, Jacqueline Mary Wood May 2006

A Study Of Carasaurus' (Dinosaura: Sauropodomorph) Torso And Its Biomechanical Implications, Jacqueline Mary Wood

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Physical examination of the articulations between the dorsal vertebrae and the dorsal ribs of the sauropod dinosaur Camarasaurus (Upper Cretaceous, Wyoming or whatever) shows that the dorsal vertebral column has a slight double curve and the torso is more narrow and volumetrically smaller than previously reconstructed. The shape of the dorsal vertebrae series was based upon the position of the zygopophyses and centrum spacing. The dorsal ribs were placed on the vertebrae based upon the position of tuberculum/diapophysis, capitulum/parapophysis, and the lateral edge of the rib head. Comparisons between the articulated torso of Camarasaurus and extant relatives allowed for the …

Maternal And Temperamental Influences On Children's Emotion Regulation, Scott Mirabile May 2006

Maternal And Temperamental Influences On Children's Emotion Regulation, Scott Mirabile

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Toddler-aged children are expected to shift from being solely dependent on parents to regulate their emotion (e.g., Fox & Calkins, 2003) to being able to independently regulate their emotions (Calkins & Johnson, 1998). Mothers' responses to children's negative emotions are expected to influence this development. Children's temperamental negative reactivity was found to moderate the effect of mothers' socialization attempts on children's regulatory behaviors, as suggested by previous theoretical and empirical work (e.g., Putnam, Sanson, & Rothbart, 2002; Rothbart & Bates, 1998). Specifically, highly negatively reactive children showed no correspondence between their mothers' attention-shifting strategies and their own attentionshifting regulation behaviors. …

The Role Of Connexin36 In Dopamine D1/D2 Synergism And Its Breakdown In Transgenic Mice, Eileen Nolan May 2006

The Role Of Connexin36 In Dopamine D1/D2 Synergism And Its Breakdown In Transgenic Mice, Eileen Nolan

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Most behavioral, physiological and cellular effects of theneurotransmitter dopamine require concomitant activation of both D1 and D2 receptors, a phenomenon referred to as D1/D2 synergism. Since D1 and D2 receptors are located mostly on separate neurons, and since D1/D2 synergism occurs in the absence of action potentials, we have suggested that electrotonic coupling via gap junctions plays an important role in this phenomenon. A major constituent of gap junctions is connexin36 (Cx36), a protein that is abundant in neurons. The role Cx36 in D1/D2 synergism, as manifested behaviorally, was studied here in mice genetically engineered to express normal, reduced, or …

Designing A Method For Measuring Magnetoresistance Of Nanostructures, Donald Scherer May 2006

Designing A Method For Measuring Magnetoresistance Of Nanostructures, Donald Scherer

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The ultimate intent of this research program is to produce nanosized magnetic tunneling junctions, and to study the physical properties of such devices. The physical phenomena of nanosized tunneling junctions are significantly different than that of currently popular micro-sized junctions. There is a considerable amount of work that must be done prior to producing these new junctions to ensure that good measurements can be carried out once the structures have been built. This thesis describes the efforts taken to design a measurement platform that will accurately measure tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) in nanosized Magneto-tunneling Junctions (MTJ). The testing done with this …

50%-50% Beam Splitters Using Transparent Substrates Coated By Single- Or Double-Layer Quarter-Wave Thin Films, Faisal Sudradjat

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

A pair of light beams that have orthogonal polarizations and equal intensity can be generated through reflection and refraction of a monochromatic light at a dielectric surface. Sytematic procedures to design beam splitters which can produce such output light beams are described in this thesis. Two designs that are of particular interest are prismatic substrates coated by a single layer and a double layer of thin films. Specific examples of each beam splitter in the visible and infrared are included. The performance of each beam splitter as a function of incidence angle, film thickness, and wavelength is also discussed.

A Content-Based Image Retrieval System For Fish Taxonomy, Fei Teng May 2006

A Content-Based Image Retrieval System For Fish Taxonomy, Fei Teng

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

It is estimated that less than ten percent of the world's species have been discovered and described. The main reason for the slow pace of new species description is that the science of taxonomy, as traditionally practiced, can be very laborious: taxonomists have to manually gather and analyze data from large numbers of specimens and identify the smallest subset of external body characters that uniquely diagnoses the new species as distinct from all its known relatives. The pace of data gathering and analysis can be greatly increased by the information technology. In this paper, we propose a content-based image retrieval …

Rites Of Passage: The Role Of Induction In The Enculturation Of Beginning Teachers, Linda Blakley May 2006

Rites Of Passage: The Role Of Induction In The Enculturation Of Beginning Teachers, Linda Blakley

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Researchers have reported that by the year 2010, two million teachers will be needed in classrooms across the country. The shortage has been attributed to population increases and a rise in the number of teacher retirements. Other researchers contend that the shortage is due to rising attrition rates among new teachers. They claim that new teachers become dissatisfied with teaching due to poor working conditions. As a result, new teachers have prematurely departed the teaching profession in alarming numbers which has placed the educational system at large in a state of crisis. This dissertation examined the factors which impacted the …

At The Confluence Of Science And Power: Water Struggles Of New Orleans In The Nineteenth Century, Carolyn Kolb May 2006

At The Confluence Of Science And Power: Water Struggles Of New Orleans In The Nineteenth Century, Carolyn Kolb

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

New Orleans failed to solve its water infrastructure problems in the nineteenth century because a shifting locus of power in a variable political and financial environment hampered wise decision making, while technology choices were limited by contemporary knowledge, scientists' ignorance, or by technicians' poor presentation skills for new ideas. And, selection was often governed by prejudice: personal, racial, or against technology. New Orleans was able to deal with its water difficulties only when those with the power to make or influence decisions had an available technology capable of handling the problem and they chose to use it. Power and science …

Thermodynamics Of Buried Water In Protein Cavities And Revised Algorithms For Introducing Polarizability To Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Lisa Renee Olano May 2006

Thermodynamics Of Buried Water In Protein Cavities And Revised Algorithms For Introducing Polarizability To Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Lisa Renee Olano

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Free energy calculations for the transfer of a water molecule from the pure liquid to an interior cavity site in a protein are presented. Three different protein cavities, in bovine pancreatic trypsin inhibitor (BPTI), the I106A mutant of lysozyme, and in the I76A mutant of barnase, represent very different environments for the water molecule, one which is polar, forming four water-protein hydrogen bonds, and two which are more hydrophobic, only forming one or two water-protein hydrogen bonds. The calculations give very different free energies for the different cavities, with only the polar BPTI cavity predicted to be hydrated. The corresponding …

Essays On Fine Structure Of Asset Returns, Jumps, And Stochastic Volatility, Jung-Suk Yu May 2006

Essays On Fine Structure Of Asset Returns, Jumps, And Stochastic Volatility, Jung-Suk Yu

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

There has been an on-going debate about choices of the most suitable model amongst a variety of model specifications and parameterizations. The first dissertation essay investigates whether asymmetric leptokurtic return distributions such as Hansen's (1994) skewed tdistribution combined with GARCH specifications can outperform mixed GARCH-jump models such as Maheu and McCurdy's (2004) GARJI model incorporating the autoregressive conditional jump intensity parameterization in the discrete-time framework. I find that the more parsimonious GJR-HT model is superior to mixed GARCH-jump models. Likelihood-ratio (LR) tests, information criteria such as AIC, SC, and HQ and Value-at-Risk (VaR) analysis confirm that GJR-HT is one of …

Although there have been several studies conducted on the differences between ethnic or racial groups with regard to their participation in outdoor recreation, research …

The Ecology Of The Endangered Dusky Gopher Frog (Rana Sevosa) And A Common Congener, The Southern Leopard Frog (Rana Sphenocephala), Nicole Thurgate May 2006

The Ecology Of The Endangered Dusky Gopher Frog (Rana Sevosa) And A Common Congener, The Southern Leopard Frog (Rana Sphenocephala), Nicole Thurgate

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Many amphibian populations are rapidly disappearing throughout the world. An important issue for ecologists is why some amphibian species are more susceptible to decline than others. Here I present five experiments that compare the performance of an endangered (Rana sevosa) and a common (Rana sphenocephala) frog in changing habitats, to determine why these two species differ in their persistence. I include additional studies investigating the habitat requirements and behavior of R. sevosa. I found that habitat change in the form of canopy closure over breeding ponds negatively affects both species, making them smaller as tadpoles and at metamorphosis. The magnitude …

Fluctuations, Phase Separation And Wetting Films Near Liquid-Gas Critical Point, Ana Oprisan May 2006

Fluctuations, Phase Separation And Wetting Films Near Liquid-Gas Critical Point, Ana Oprisan

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Gravity on Earth limits the study of the properties of pure fluids near critical point because they become stratified under their own weight. Near the critical point, all thermodynamic properties either diverge or converge and the heating and cooling cause instabilities of the convective flow as a consequence of the expansibility divergence. In order to study boiling, fluctuation and phase separation processes near the critical point of pure fluids without the influence of the Earth's gravity, a number of experiments were performed in the weightlessness of Mir space station. The experimental setup called ALICE II instrument was designed to suppress …

Target Detection Using A Wavelet-Based Fractal Scheme, Gregory W. Stein May 2006

Target Detection Using A Wavelet-Based Fractal Scheme, Gregory W. Stein

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, a target detection technique using a rotational invariant wavelet-based scheme is presented. The technique is evaluated on Synthetic Aperture Rader (SAR) imaging and compared with a previously developed fractal-based technique, namely the extended fractal (EF) model. Both techniques attempt to exploit the textural characteristics of SAR imagery. Recently, a wavelet-based fractal feature set, similar to the proposed one, was compared with the EF feature for a general texture classification problem. The wavelet-based technique yielded a lower classification error than EF, which motivated the comparison between the two techniques presented in this paper. Experimental results show that the …
