A Marxist Critique Of Alasdair Macintyre's After Virtue, Colin S. Cavell
A Marxist Critique Of Alasdair Macintyre's After Virtue, Colin S. Cavell
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Alasdair Macintyre asserts in After Virtue that contemporary moral discourse is only arbitrary assertion of the will. Appeals to reasoned arguments have been replaced by expressions of preference, attitude and feeling-- in short, by "emotivism." Macintyre locates this moral breakdown in the Enlightenment philosophers' failed attempt to replace Aristotelian teleology with a rational justification for morality.
Macintyre's analysis fails because he does not show whose interests are served through the assertion of arbitrary supposed will or whose interests were served when "objective" standard of the Middle the Ages prevailed. He does not acknowledge the preeminent role the material relations of …
Applications Of A Direct Fast Field/Reflectivity Method To Wave Propagation Modeling In Underwater Acoustic And Solid Earth Seismic Environments, Gerard Joseph Tango
Applications Of A Direct Fast Field/Reflectivity Method To Wave Propagation Modeling In Underwater Acoustic And Solid Earth Seismic Environments, Gerard Joseph Tango
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
A new method is discussed for exact rapid computation of the depth-dependent Green's function occuring in full integral solutions to the acoustic and elastic Helmholtz wave equation, allowing calculations of underwater acoustic propagation loss and full wavefield synthetic seismograms, in range-independent plane stratified media.
Facing The Future In St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana: Planning And Development, Gregory L. Chase
Facing The Future In St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana: Planning And Development, Gregory L. Chase
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
St. Bernard Parish (Louisiana) has undergone a transition from rural, agrarian characteristics to that of a suburban, industrial based community. Its fragile environment has been substantially altered by man's use.
Planning and development strategies need to be devised to address the stress placed on the environment by these alterations, particularly dealing with coastal erosion, land loss and increased threat of tidal surge and flooding if development in the area is to continue.
St. Bernard also faces a changing economy with the declines of its industrial based economy and employment base which requires that new forms of economic development are established …
The First Minute Book Of The Supreme Court Of The State Of Louisiana 1813 To May, 1818: An Annotated Edition, Sybil Ann Boudreaux
The First Minute Book Of The Supreme Court Of The State Of Louisiana 1813 To May, 1818: An Annotated Edition, Sybil Ann Boudreaux
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The Supreme Court of the State of Louisiana, established by the first state constitution (1812) as the only appellate court in the judicial system, commenced its work on March 1, 1813. The Court's jurisdiction was limited to civil cases. It also had control over admissions to the bar and the rules for the administration of its own business. Created in the wake of the conflict between proponents of Louisiana's traditional civil law system and the promulgators of the federal government's territorial policy of common law imposition, the Supreme Court reinforced the ultimately accepted continuance of civil law within the limitations …

The Creole Case, William Joseph Poole Jr.
The Creole Case, William Joseph Poole Jr.
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
On November 7, 1841, the slaves on board the American brig Creole bound from Richmond, Virginia, to New Orleans, rose in revolt and forced the crew to sail the vessel to the British port of Nassau in the Bahamas. There the authorities imprisoned 19 of those involved in the mutiny but freed the remaining blacks. Later, after receiving instructions from London, the 19 mutineers were also liberated despite the angry protests of southerners in the United States.
The Creole incident became the subject of acrimonious debate in both houses of Congress and resulted in the breaking of the "gag" rule: …
