Career maturity is operationally defined as the readiness of an individual to make informed, age-appropriate career decisions and cope with career development tasks (King, 1990; Savickas, 1984). The matched sample consisted of a total of 344 participants including college freshmen student-athletes (n = 107), freshmen non-student-athletes (n = 107), senior student-athletes (n = 65), and senior non-student-athletes (n = 65). It was hypothesized that there would be significant, positive relationships between the psychosocial variables of educational involvement (EI), career planning (CP), career decision making self-efficacy (CDMSE), and career locus of control (CLCS), and significant, negative relationships between these measures and …

The purpose of this study was to determine what specifically West Virginia's 11 community and technical colleges had done to meet the mandates of Senate Bill 547 to be involved in economic development. Eleven key factors that define the institutional response to economic development goals were identified through an analysis of annual reports filed with the Vice-Chancellor for Community and Technical Colleges from 1995 through 1999, and an analysis of interviews conducted with community and technical college CEOs or their designees. Despite the rapid industrialization and high rates of economic growth that Japan experienced for much of the postwar period, there have been relatively few attempts by English-language researchers to investigate Japan's domestic space-economy at the regional scale. This dissertation examines the process of uneven development in Japan from 1965 to 1994. The conceptual framework for the analysis is a regional political economy approach, combining theories of uneven development with recent work by Michael Webber and David Rigby on regional profit rates in manufacturing and the determinants of profit rate change over time. Several compelling reports are calling for the improvement of undergraduate education. Their central concern is that colleges and universities are not learning communities, where both faculty and students are engaged in a powerful learning environment. The purpose of this study was to learn how faculty are addressing these concerns by approaching teaching as a scholarly activity. The case studies and qualitative analyses of the data revealed that diverse educational institutions and faculty from different disciplines are approaching teaching as an investigative process. To Build, And Plant, And Keep A Table': Class, Gender, And The Ideology Of Improvement In Eighteenth-Century Women's Literature., Jeannie C. Dalporto

In this dissertation, I argue that the discourse of improvement, which stressed profit and productivity on the land and in the household, helped to define—and was defined by—class and gender ideology in the eighteenth century. I read the works of laboring class women poets, Mary Collier and Mary Leapor, and the utopian novelist, Sarah Scott, within the framework of land improvement treatises and household books. In doing so, I demonstrate how ideologies of labor and gender are inherently bound up with socioeconomic concerns about land and estate management. Enamel decalcification is a significant problem in orthodontic patients. The argon laser has been shown to reduce decalcification during an acidic challenge in vitro. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of argon laser irradiation on decalcification under banded teeth during orthodontic treatment in vivo. Eight volunteers requiring four bicuspid extractions for orthodontic treatment were enrolled and each bicuspid was assigned a group. A specially designed plaque-collecting band was cemented on each tooth following the treatment and remained for five weeks. Occupational injuries claimed the lives of over 30,000 American workers from 1990-1995 as reported through the National Traumatic Occupational Fatalities (NTOF) surveillance system. Estimates of the value of these lives have been calculated, but nearly all studies present an aggregate value, which sheds no light on the variations in costs for different case or worker characteristics. This project developed a user-friendly computer program to calculate the cost of fatal occupational for exclusive use by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Research is being conducted at West Virginia University (WVU) in collaboration with the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division (NSWCCD) and Johns Hopkins University (JHU) to study the mixing that occurs during the refueling of U.S. naval vessels. These vessels employ a series of tanks to both store fuel and to maintain the balance of the ship by taking on seawater as the fuel is consumed. Eighteen 200 ha plots were established in the Monongahela National Forest (MNF), Pocahontas County, West Virginia, and in the George Washington National Forest (GWNF), Augusta County, Virginia. From 1995-1999 Malaise traps and foliage pruning were used to collect Symphyta adults and larvae. During 1997 and 1998, six plots each were aerially treated with nucleopolyhedrosis virus (Gypchek™) and Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki. The remaining six plots were left untreated. Adult Symphyta richness and abundance were studied using Malaise traps. Each plot contained two Malaise traps, located at different elevations, which were monitored from early May through mid-August of 1995 through 1999. …

Recent chassis and on-road testing of hybrid electric buses (HEBs) performed by West Virginia University demonstrated the potential of hybrid technology to be significantly fuel efficient and reduce regulated emissions and greenhouse gas output compared to buses with conventional drivetrains. All heavy-duty engines, including the engines in HEBs, need to be certified through the Federal Testing Procedure (FTP) prescribed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. The operation of series HEBs with engine-generator units does not follow the behavior of the FTP, which is transient in nature. A novel immunosuppressant, FR901483 (1) was discovered by a Fujisawa company, which was isolated from the fermentation broth of a fungal strain. It exerts a potent immunosuppressive activity in vitro and significantly prolongs graft survival time in the rat skin allograft model. Our group has postulated a novel synthetic approach to the target compound (1) that can be used for the preparation of a structurally diverse set of compounds. Using an African-American sample, this study replicates the work of Toale and McCroskey (in press) on predictor variables associated with interethnic communication apprehension. Participants responded to Canary and Stafford’s (1992) relational maintenance strategies typology, Personal Report of Interethnic Communication Apprehension (PRECA), Person Report of Communication Apprehension (PRCA-24) and Neuliep and McCroskey’s (1997b) General Ethnocentrism scale. The results indicated that interethnic communication apprehension was not correlated with relational maintenance strategies used in interethnic relationships. Although trait communication apprehension and ethnocentrism were both predictive of IECA, ethnocentrism was more predictive, accounting for most of the variance in IECA scores. This study gives …

Nephropathic cystinosis is a rare autosomal recessive disorder. Cystinosis results from accumulation of the disulfide amino acid, cystine, within the lysosomes of various cells of the body. Cysteamine bitartrate capsules appear to be an effective and well-tolerated cystine depleting agent and as such have become the standard of therapy for patients with cystinosis. Increases in communication competence and willingness to communicate and decreases in communication apprehension are frequent goals of general education oral communication courses. The present investigation examined the relationship between Kolb’s learning styles and student changes in communication competence, willingness to communicate, and communication apprehension while enrolled in a basic oral communication course. Results suggest modest relationships between some of Kolb’s learning modes and styles and the communication outcomes.

Burns from hot food and liquid account for 100,000 burns in children each year. The current research targets a high burn risk environment, restaurants, in order to examine server knowledge about burn prevention and burn care with customers. Participants included 71 local restaurant servers and 53 servers from various restaurants who were recruited from undergraduate courses at West Virginia University. All participants completed a brief demographic form as well as a Burn Knowledge Questionnaire. It was found that server knowledge was low (i.e., around 50% accuracy). The linearized dispersion relation describing waves in a plasma having a uniform magnetic field, uniform density, and inhomogeous parallel (to the magnetic field) flow [G. Ganguli, M.J. Keskinen, H. Romero, R. Heelis, T. Moore, and C. Pollock, J. Geophys. Res., 99, 8873 (1994)] is generalized to include thermal anisotropy, a key feature existing in many space and laboratory plasmas. The eye is a very sensitive organ of the human body, and is subject to many hazards that may cause disorders such as miosis. Thus non-costly, non-invasive, safe methods for pupil assessment and monitoring are of the essence. Proposed is a simple eye scanning mechanism that periodically reports whether the pupil has experienced miosis or dilatation due to an external illumination source. The process uses a Clanguage program to control the image-grabbing process, as well as determining the pupil constriction/dilation conditions. On May 19, 1920, gunshots rang through the streets of Matewan, West Virginia, in an event soon known as the “Matewan Massacre.” Most historians of West Virginia and Appalachia see this event as the beginning of a long series of events known as the second mine wars. This dissertation argues that this event was, rather, the culmination of an even longer series of events that unfolded in Mingo County, dating back at least to the Civil War, and setting the stage for the second mine war. Nonadherence to asthma medication is a persistent problem. Contingency management has been used to improve pediatric compliance to inhaled corticosteroids. But token systems require time and attention to design and maintain, creating a challenge for busy outpatient clinics. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an intervention that might more easily be implemented by medical staff and parents: objective monitoring of medication use and feedback regarding errors in technique and compliance as an intervention to improve children's adherence to inhaled corticosteroids. This study investigated the relationship between teacher clarity and teacher misbehaviors with students' affect toward the content, the teacher, enrollment with related content, and enrollment with the same teacher, and with students' perceptions of teacher competence, caring, and trustworthiness. Participants completed Chesebro and McCroskey's (1998a) Teacher Clarity Short Inventory (TCSI), Toale, Thweatt, and McCroskey's (2001) Teacher Misbehaviors Scale, Teven and McCroskey's (1997) credibility scale, and four bipolar scales to assess the four components of affective learning. This study examined relationships among the way teachers communicate in the classroom, teachers temperaments, and perceptions of teachers by students. Specifically, the first goal was to determine to what extent a teacher's levels of extraversion, neuroticism, and psychoticism can predict students perceptions of task attraction, immediacy, assertiveness, responsiveness, and credibility. The second goal was to determine the relationships between teacher temperament and teacher evaluations, affective learning, and cognitive learning. Self-report surveys of 52 teachers and 1242 students across seven disciplines at West Virginia University were collected. Instructors received measures of extraversion, neuroticism, and psychoticism. Previous work has shown that the effects of T3 on malic enzyme transcription are mediated in large part by sequence elements located within a liver-specific and T3-inducible DNase I hypersensitive region in the 5′-flanking DNA of the malic enzyme gene. The purpose of this study was to describe the present status of geography education in boys' intermediate schools in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia as perceived by geography teachers and supervisors; that is, to investigate the objectives, content, methods of teaching, tools and resources that are available and used in classrooms, evaluation techniques, and problems encountered in the teaching of geography. European and white American conquest and settlement of the Upper Ohio River Valley during the second half of the eighteenth century transformed the region from Indian cultural domination to white American domination. The region's inhabitants, Lenapes, Shawnees, Senecas, and various other Indian nations, settled the Upper Ohio Valley during the first half of the century and brought their cultures to the region. White settlers soon followed. During this often violent period of frontier contact, whites borrowed from, Indian culture to improve their frontier life, which created a hybrid, or frontier, culture.
