The current study examined receiver and listening behaviors from a communibiological point of view. Communibiology proposes that particular communication variables are predictable by individual inborn processes. These inborn processes make up our individual temperament. Therefore, the apprehension variables were measured to determine if they were predicted by temperament. Individual temperament was measured using Eysenck’s Big Three measurement of extroversion, neuroticism, and psychoticism. The dependent variables were then regressed to determine if they were predictable by all three temperament variables and/or by one of individual variables. College undergraduates (N = 325) voluntarily participated in the study. Results indicate mixed support for …

This thesis explores the evolution of flourmills in Frederick County, Maryland within the context of the economic and social development of western Maryland from 1748-1789. Western Maryland’s development differed greatly from that of most other areas in Maryland. A large German immigrant population, along with English and Scottish settlers, settled the valleys, of present day Frederick County, during the eighteenth century. These settlers grew wheat and created a need for mills and millers. Economically, mills created prosperity by attracting new businesses and settlers to the frontier. Politically and socially, millers influenced a region often in conflict with the tobacco interests …

This research analyzes effects of firm demographics and local labor market characteristics on a firm’s selection of college graduate recruitment techniques. A survey of West Virginia businesses expected to employ relatively more college graduates was administered to gauge differences in characteristics of businesses participating in formal college graduate recruitment programs versus those that do not. Descriptive statistics and a multinomial logistic regression model reveal that larger establishments and businesses with a higher percentage of employees with a college degree utilize formal college graduate techniques in the employee search process. The environmental justice movement has focused national attention on the relationships between race, income, and environmental quality. With the signing of Executive Order 12898, one would expect to see improvements in the environmental quality in minority and low-income communities. Using information available through the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) as the measure of environmental quality, this paper empirically examines trends in toxic chemical release levels within the state of Texas for the years before and after the signing of the Executive Order. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among self-perceived body image, interaction involvement, and interpersonal communication motives. Participants (N = 137) completed the Self-Perceived Body Image Scale (Richmond, 1998), the Interaction Involvement Scale (Cegala, 1981), and the Interpersonal Communication Motives Scale (Rubin, Perse, & Barbato, 1988). Results indicated that self-perceived body image was negatively related with the inclusion and relaxation motives, but was not significantly correlated with the pleasure, affection, escape, and control motives. This study used the newly developed Interpersonal-Goal Locus of Control scale (IGLOC) and the Revised Family Communication Patterns (RFCP) scale to investigate the relationship between people’s family communication growing up with their sense of locus of control later in life. It was hypothesized that family communication patterns would be related to the subscales of the IGLOC. College undergraduates (N=215) were given a survey which measured their locus of control and family communication patterns. Results of a Pearson Correlation show conversation-orientation to be positively related to internal, structural, other-owned, and negatively related to normative and phenomenal locus of control. A Model For Building A Better Academic Web Site: A Quantitative Analysis Of Foreign Language Departments On The World Wide Web., Margarita (Maria) M. Toro

This thesis defines what an effective academic web site is, and examines the utilization of web sites by the Land Grant colleges’ foreign language departments. A system with the parameters of evaluation was created from studies that observed web users’ perceptions of web sites. Four main factors were analyzed: informativeness, interactivity, entertainment, design and usability. The results showed that departments of foreign language are not projecting a positive image throughout their web sites. Moreover, the web masters of the foreign language departmental sites are not considering entertainment and interactivity features as fundamental elements in the development of academic web sites.

Efficient transportation of cuttings is a vital factor for a good drilling program. Cutting transport in annulus is a complex problem that is affected by numerous parameters. Predicting effective cuttings transport requires all of these parameters to be considered simultaneously. To better understand the effects of some of the parameters affecting the cutting transportation, a combination of casing-drill pipe annulus section was simulated and a model called ‘discrete phase model’ was used to observe the transportation of cuttings in the annulus. The effects of weight; high (HW) or low (LW), and diet; high-energy (HE) or low-energy (LE), on the fertility of 118 yearling Angus, Hereford, and Angus x Hereford beef heifers were investigated. Heifers were blocked by body weight, and randomly assigned to diets for 47 and 42 days in years, 1 and 2, respectively. Estrus was synchronized with MGA (8 d, 0.5mg/hd/d), PGF2α (25 mg i.m.), and estradiol benzoate (400 µg i.m, 48 h after PGF2α) regimen. Heifers were artificially inseminated between 78-84 h after the PGF2α injection and then exposed to a bull for the second service. Overall pregnancy …

The pathogenesis of familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (fALS), a fatal neurodegenerative disease that sometimes results from SOD1 mutations, may involve the peroxidase reaction of the SOD1 protein. The aim of this thesis was to test the hypothesis that the peroxidase reaction of SOD results in SOD-centered peroxyl radical formation. The source of oxygen incorporated into 2-oxohistidine was to have been determined using HPLC/Mass spectrometry. This aim was not accomplished. Disordered eating and inadequate nutrient intake are problematic issues concerning females involved in athletics. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of eating disorder pathology and inadequate diet intake among a population of female athletes. A convenience sample of 91 female athletes was recruited from West Virginia University. The subjects were surveyed for the presence of eating pathology via three validated self-report questionnaires. Quantitative nutrient intake was assessed using a food-frequency questionnaire. The results revealed that 23% (n=21) of subjects were classified as having a probable eating disorder, 41% (n=37) of the athletes demonstrated some eating pathology …

The cause and number of coal mining fatal accidents has been recorded since state mine inspection offices began in the mid 1870’s. With the advent of the United States Bureau of Mines, coal mine fatalities were analyzed in various ways. This study looks at the data from a novel direction: the relationship between fatality incidence rates and how long a mine has been active. Data from 1991 to 2000 was extracted from both the MSHA fatality reports and the MSHA Address/Employment database. The aim of this study was to examine the representations of adaptation and innovation among communications employees at West Virginia University. This case study was based on a marketing and communication project called “Stream of the Week,” which featured streaming video news reports on the university’s main web page. A data set of the videos was analyzed based on criteria set forth by the university’s marketing and communication goals. This essay attempts to demonstrate a tradition of the narrative use of technological tropes in Anglo-American popular narratives since the Renaissance. The people of Guastatoya, Guatemala have received minimal dental intervention and their dental needs have never been assessed. The purpose of this study was to assess the dental health needs of the children (ages four to seven) residing in this town. Based on these needs an oral hygiene education program was developed, implemented, and evaluated. A systematic sample resulted in 32 participants. The effectiveness of this three-phase study (assessment, disease control intervention, and post-assessment) was determined by utilizing four indices (DMFS, defs, OHI-S, and P-M-A). To alleviate the deterioration of concrete structures, High-Performance Concrete (HPC) is extensively used, particularly for bridge decks, due to its favorable durability characteristics. However, there is a problem with the high cracking tendency of HPC due to its high early shrinkage, low water-cementitious ratio, brittleness and low creep. Thus, the HPC advantages of high compressive strength and low permeability are somewhat offset by cracking problems, which reduce the service life of bridge decks. Components of attitudes towards transit in a small city (pop. 25,000) with college campus are studied (student pop. 20,000). The endodontic resin sealer AH26® has been shown in multiple studies to have mutagenic potential. A unique test designed to identify phenotypic change in antibiotic resistance due to chromosomal mutation was described and performed. This test, modeled after the Ames test, used the Salmonella typhimurium (TA100) as the test organism. The test was divided into four phases. 1. Mutation Phase 2. Protein Expression Phase 3. Plate Incorporation 4. Evaluation of Antibiotic Resistance - changes in MIC values to ciprofloxacin, tetracycline & erythromycin identified with Etest®. The AH26® demonstrated a log-fold increase in mutant rate compared to the spontaneous mutant rate. …
