Recognizing that stress is related to a variety of psychological and physical health consequences, several studies have examined strategies individuals use to cope with life stressors. Two such strategies are rumination and emotional writing. Although on the surface, these two strategies appear to evoke similar goals (e.g., exposure to negative life events), research has shown that rumination is closely associated with delays in cardiovascular recovery and emotional writing is possibly linked to enhanced cardiovascular recovery from stress. The purpose of the current study was to determine whether a two-session media literacy program, A.R.M.E.D. (Acknowledging and Rejecting the Media's Influence on Eating and Body Image Disturbances), was an effective intervention for individuals who fell at various points on the eating disorder continuum. Ninety-three female college students participated in the study, with 46 experimental participants attending A.R.M.E.D and 47 participants serving as a control group. Between-subjects analyses did not reveal differences between the experimental and control group on each of the seven dependent variables. Within-subjects repeated measures analyses did, however, reveal that women who attended A.R.M.E.D. significantly reduced their …

Retroviruses are a family of RNA viruses that replicate through DNA intermediates by reverse transcribing their genome. One of the essential steps of reverse transcription is minus-strand DNA transfer, during which nascent DNA switches template usage from the 5′ end to near the 3′ of the viral RNA genome. We have determined that minus-strand DNA transfer is homology driven; a minimum homology length is required to align the newly synthesized DNA with the 3′ RNA template to facilitate an efficient and accurate transfer. The bone marrow microenvironment composed in part of stromal cells provides the niche in which normal hematopoiesis occurs. Hematopoiesis generates cellular components of the immune system and blood through proliferation and differentiation of multipotent hematopoietic stem cells (HSC). In preparation for bone marrow transplantation, radiation or chemotherapy treatment temporarily disrupts the balance of hematopoiesis as many HSC and progenitor cells are destroyed. Following treatment cessation, transplanted HSC and progenitor cells migrate, or "home", back to the bone marrow microenvironment and initiate productive hematopoiesis. The geological experiences of six teachers with a history of sustained participation in the RockCamp geology professional development program were investigated. The research premise was based on Gordon's (1961, 1971) and Joyce and Weil's (1996) descriptions of the usefulness of synectics to present new ways of looking at familiar situations. The overarching goal was to delineate both reasons for participation and tropologically characterizations of their recurrent (sustained) participation. The Myogenic Regulatory Factor family (MRFs) is a family of transcription factors that plays a key role in the development of skeletal muscle. MRFs include Myo D, myf-5, myogenin, and MRF-4. Myo D and myf-5 are genes expressed during myoblast proliferation, whereas myogenin and MRF-4 are expressed during myotube formation and differentiation. Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1) controls muscle development both embryonically and during postnatal growth and repair by inducing myoblast proliferation and muscle hypertrophy. Abandoned mine lands are areas affected by past coal mining activities that often pose significant water quality problems from acid mine drainage (AMD). Weather, a primary determinant of AMD, is inherently stochastic. The economic costs of treating AMD problems are an issue of importance to policymakers and citizens. The UROtsa cell line is a unique model of human urothelium with considerable utility in toxicology-based research. UROtsa cells maintained in serum-free medium have several morphological features of transitional epithelium of the urinary bladder including a multilayered appearance and apically located umbrella-like cells that exhibit tight junctions. These cells also have a basal expression pattern of heat shock protein (hsp) and metallothionein (MT) genes similar to that observed in in situ urothelium. Edge punchout has been long recognized as the prevailing mode of structural failure in Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavements (CRCP) and yet, has remained relatively unexplored and unexplained. Offspring studies show a preferential paternal origin for heritable structural chromosomal abnormalities, presenting the need for methods to efficiently detect structural chromosomal abnormalities in human sperm. The Ca-ATPase of sarcoplasmic reticulum is a 110 kDa integral membrane protein responsible for calcium transport from the cytosol into the sarcoplasmic reticulum lumen to promote muscle relaxation. In the heart, the Ca-ATPase is regulated by phospholamban, a 52 residue integral membrane protein, which inhibits the Ca-ATPase by decreasing the apparent calcium affinity of the enzyme. Phospholamban phosphorylation relieves Ca-ATPase inhibition. At present, the physical mechanism by which phospholamban regulates the Ca-ATPase is not known. A total of 35 flooded underground-coal mines of the Pittsburgh coal of northwestern West Virginia and southwestern Pennsylvania were evaluated using a detailed fluid mass balance (FMB) approach to estimate a yearly rate of apparent vertical infiltration (AVI) for calendar year 2000. Essential to the water budget approach in deep mine aquifers is the role of flow through intact perimeter barriers. In this study, two mines, Jamison and Odonnell, have been identified as ideal locations for modelling of an isotropic Kh using a water budget approach. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of vehicle weight and model year on vehicle contribution to atmospheric pollutant inventories. The weight class of the vehicle was found to have the greatest impact on vehicle emissions with NOx increasing 285% while PM increased 269% when going from a 12,000 lbs GVWR vehicle to a 52,000 GVWR vehicle with engines certified to the same emissions standards. The vehicle age had a significant impact on emissions production with NOx and PM both increasing 148% and 183% respectively going from a 1985 model year vehicle to a year 2000 model …

An improved apparatus for anodizing aluminum films on Si substrates is presented. In addition, an explanation is given for adapting the system to SiC and glass substrates. The system presented is optimized for throughput and safety to focus on volume production. MOS capacitors created with the system are analyzed with capacitance-voltage measurement techniques to provide insight into device operation. Birds have few reliable indicators of aging. Pentosidine (Ps), a biomarker of aging, is a product of non-enzymatic glycation, which accumulates in the tissues of an animal over its lifespan. The intent of this study was to determine if comparable change in Ps concentrations could be established in the skin of wild birds of known ages. Skin samples were obtained from the breast of 44 birds of various species. Foot webbing samples were obtained from 24 California Gulls. Frequency of detection was monitored in three flocks of turkeys from May, 2000 to March 2001. The effect of time was considered for hens in flocks 1 and 2, and the effect of time, gender, and litter (fresh or used) was determined for flock 3. Poults, poult-box liners, waterers, and fecal droppings were monitered throughout production for the presence of Campylobacter using Campy-Cefex agar incubated at 42°C under microaerophilic conditions (85% N2, 10% CO2, and 5% O2). Mountaintop surface mining for coal has been practiced in West Virginia for over three decades, but its environmental impacts have become increasingly scrutinized in recent years. Therefore, this study evaluated soil development on different aged mined lands. Four different ages (2, 7, 11, and 23 years) of minesoils and two different slope classes, nearly level to gently sloping and steep to very steep, along with three contiguous native soils on a reclaimed mountaintop removal mine in Logan County, West Virginia were described and sampled. The European settlers who emigrated to America in the seventeenth century were decidedly patriarchal. Nevertheless, significant cultural differences in expressions of patriarchy among them existed. Specifically, the Dutch of New Netherland defined the gendered roles of women differently than did other European cultures. More than deputy-husbands, but less than full partner, seventeenth-century Dutch women in New Netherland were integral to the survival and promotion of their families' interests and preservation of the colony. English expropriation of New Netherland in 1664 and permanent acquisition in 1674 inaugurate a process of patriarchal acculturation that over time submerged the roles of Dutch women. …

The performance of cobalt tungsten carbide material was investigated for CH4/CO2 reforming. The catalyst was found to convert to a very stable, very active, form when heated in CH4/CO 2 at 850°C and 5 atm. Even after 90 hours on stream, CH4 and CO2 rates of 1.3 and 1.25 mmol/min/g respectively are obtained, with CO yields of 76% and H2/CO ratio close to unity. XRD patterns suggest a phase transformation to WC+Co+C. SEM images suggest formation of encapsulated carbon and whisker carbon.;The kinetics of CH4/CO2 reforming was studied under differential conditions over 500--600°C. The adoption of object-oriented programming for spatial technological advancement is an emerging trend in GIS. This research seeks to explore Object-Oriented GIS (OOGIS) and its potential application in watershed resource management. OOGIS provides a more intuitive and realistic abstraction of real world features as intelligent objects. The ability to embed behavior, geometry, and attribution with the objects provides considerable advantages in the processing and analysis of geospatial data. This study examined gender and age-related differences in reasons for living, using a sample of 50 young adults (M = 20.2), 53 middle-aged adults (M = 49.3), and 55 older adults ( M = 78.5). Participants completed a combined version of the Reasons for Living Inventory, the Reasons for Living Inventory for Younger Adults, and the Reasons for Living Inventory for Older Adults. Although no gender differences emerged in reasons for living, younger adults placed more importance on fear of social disapproval, moral objections, survival and coping skills, peer acceptance, survival and coping beliefs, fear of suicide, and future optimism …
