The study was a descriptive analysis of the cognitive processes of college students. The instruments used for data collection were the modified CPQPE, student demographic and thought questionnaires, and a teacher questionnaire asking them to rate initial and ending skill level, improvement, and the student cognitive processes measured on the CPQPE. The participants in the study were 151 college students enrolled in basic instruction bowling classes. The students were divided into three skill groups (high, low skill-high improvement, and low skill-low improvement) based on initial bowling averages and ending improvement. Structure, stability, kinetics and mechanisms of oxidation of some important organosulfur compounds (2-aminoethanethiolsulfuric acid, 4-methyl-3-thiosemicarbazide and thionicotinamide) have been investigated by using UV-VIS, NMR, stopped-flow, and qualitative analysis. Results obtained showed that oxidation occurs mainly at the reactive sulfur center of the molecules via successive addition of oxygen atoms. The oxidation of thionicotinamide, an important xenobiotic, gave different oxygenated products, depending on the oxidizing power of the oxidant used. The sulfinic acid of thionicotinamide is stable with mild oxidizing agents while stronger oxidants desulfurize the molecule to yield sulfate as observed with other organosulfur compounds studied. Communication plays a key role in family conflict, and family conflict has been the focus of much social concern in recent years. The Family Conflict Communication Model (FCCM; Hinkle, 2000b) presents a concise overview of some of the prominent components and processes that occur during and after family conflict communication that result specifically from disagreement over an issue or issues. This study investigated the effect of math anxiety, math self-efficacy, and computer-assisted instruction on the ability of undergraduate nursing students to calculate drug dosages. The population of the study consisted of undergraduate nursing students at Mountain State University (N = 122), while the sample included students enrolled in a Math Topics for Nurses course during the Spring Semester of 2002 (n = 40). Mountain State University is a small, private university located in Beckley, West Virginia. I examined the effects of long-term CO2 enrichment on leaf physiology, chemistry and phenology of overstory sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua L.) trees that were naturally established within an unmanaged loblolly pine plantation at the Duke Forest Free Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) experiment. This experiment consisted of three control plots and three plots that had been continuously fumigated with elevated CO2. Elevated CO2 consistently increased photosynthesis in sun and shade leaves. Photosynthesis, however, was stimulated to a greater degree in sun leaves than shade leaves. Elevated CO2 stimulated apparent quantum yield, but there was no interaction between CO2 treatment and leaf position. …

Metals have been indicated in causing generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and cellular injury. The overall objective of the present study was to investigate ROS generation from metals and the related effects on biological systems. The results obtained from the present studies have demonstrated that: (a) Cobalt is capable of generating ·OH via a Co(I)-mediated Fenton-like reaction. (b) The ·OH radical is generated by reaction of H2O2 with Cr(V), which is produced by enzymatic one-electron reduction of Cr(VI). The purpose of this study was to examine and understand potential differences between psychologists who have engaged in a nonsexual and sexual dual relationship and psychologists who have not. Psychologists from across the United States (N = 59) completed questionnaires concerning object relations, parentification, narcissistic injury, self-esteem, and ethical judgment. Chronic renal disease is the progressive loss of renal function that can lead to end-stage renal disease. Recent studies from our laboratory have shown decreased total NO production in patients with renal disease. Animal models have shown decreased total and renal NO production and chronic NOS inhibition in otherwise healthy rats causes renal injury. The overall objective in this set of studies was to investigate intrarenal NO production in various models of CRD and determine if NO deficiency parallels, and perhaps causes renal injury. In it he included rhythmic, harmonic and melodic elements of Spanish music, as well as references to Spanish life and culture. The dissertation studies the profitability of technical trading rules in foreign exchange markets, giving special emphasis to emerging economies, and explores the link between this profitability and the central bank intervention activity. The first chapter presents the motivation and defines the scope. The second chapter reviews the literature related to the subject. The third chapter applies a moving average trading rule to 28 exchange rate series in the post-Bretton Woods period. Currencies of 14 developed and 14 emerging countries are considered. The concept of teacher self-disclosure has been studied using a variety of methods. A review of teacher self-disclosure literature found that operationalization of teacher self disclosure had yet to be agreed upon by researchers. This thesis applied a new teacher self-disclosure scale developed primarily for this research. It was hypothesized teacher self-disclosure would be related to (1) the student motives of functional, relational, and participatory, (2) class participation, (3) affect for class, (4) affect for teacher, and (5) relational certainty. The current study investigated how expectancies for good (optimism) vs. bad (pessimism) outcomes contribute to physical and psychological well-being among adults with type 2 diabetes. Participants were 71 community-dwelling adults, ages 45 to 88. Telephone interviews queried about optimism and pessimism via the Life Orientation Test (LOT) and a diabetes-specific LOT (DLOT), depression, positive affect (PA), negative affect (NA), diabetes perceptions, and selfcare behaviors (diet, exercise, blood glucose monitoring). Higher LOT optimism was associated with lower levels of depression and higher PA. Higher LOT and DLOT pessimism were related to lower PA. Neither the LOT nor DLOT were associated with …

This study examined the relationships between transformational leadership, transactional leadership, laissez-faire leadership and school climate as perceived by teachers in Ohio secondary joint vocational schools. A one-shot case study research design investigated these relationships and also examined the relationship between leadership styles and school climate based on gender. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire 5x and the CFK Ltd. School Climate Profile were mailed to a randomly selected sample of 345 teachers; responses were received from 201 (58.3%) of the teachers. This project considers the demands American women confront about their societal roles, particularly cultural discourses that urge women to become biological mothers. These discourses become especially compelling during eras when women transgress ideological boundaries, leaving the constructed domestic space and taking places in the public sphere. I analyze responses to these discourses as they are manifested in literature written between 1928 and 1948 as well as in the late twentieth century. My analysis, informed by cultural studies and feminist theory, depends upon my use of intersubjectivity theory, particularly as articulated by Jessica Benjamin. I discuss the role of the body …

By examining in detail the conference records as well as a variety of personal collections and writings, this dissertation investigates the U.S. role at the Washington Conference, 1921-22, specifically the forgotten aspects of the “Questions of the Far East.” Historians have traditionally focused on the Five-Power Treaty (limitation of naval armaments) or the Four-Power Treaty (alliance in East Asia). So prominent has been this focus that some scholars have contended that the conference produced a so-called Washington system, which replaced the existing imperialist system and defined East Asian relations throughout the 1920s. Three child welfare workers were studied over the period of one month to investigate their transfer experiences with learning one aspect of their agency's information system. Objective: To write an institutional policy that outlines a referral plan for collegiate athletes diagnosed with eating disorders. Design: A modified Delphi Technique. The present study examined the relationship between preschoolers academic self-esteem and the quality of their child care center. Data on the quality of the child care environment from the Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale Revised (ECERS-R) was derived from nine preschool classrooms, and data on academic self-esteem from the Behavioral Academic Self-Esteem (BASE) Rating Scale was obtained from 110 preschool children. The objective of this thesis was to research two aspects of heavy-duty diesel engine emissions. The first was to examine the effects of engine oscillations on engine emissions. This thesis explores the concept of loyalty marketing as a component of relationship marketing, by creating, building, and maintaining long-term relationships with customers to develop lifetime value and brand loyalty to one particular company or brand. The data highlights loyalty card programs implemented within the supermarket industry and evaluates those programs based on the variables of loyalty. The variables include trust, commitment, satisfaction, and value. The findings show documentation for or against the initial hypotheses, which involve factors affecting supermarket loyalty, such as convenience, price, and perceived brand value.

This study was an exploratory study of associations between selected personality traits of agriculture teachers and perceived teaching program effectiveness. The twenty male teachers of agriculture who graduated/certified between the years 1981 and 1990, and who had taught agriculture in West Virginia high schools for more than one year were asked to complete the Emotions Profile Index which, when analyzed, provides a percentile score based upon national norms in eight dimensions of personality.
