Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This research investigated the impact of age upon learning a manual assembly task in the presence of visual and auditory distractors in males and females ranging in age between 18 and 65 years. Four phases of learning were studied: the number of initial error trials, the number of times the instructional video was watched, the total number of trials needed to complete the experiment, and trial time. Age was only found to be a significant factor for the total number of trials; subjects aged 51--65 took 31% more trials than the younger subjects. Additionally, older subjects who were exposed to …

Cohesive Zone Model For Facesheet -Core Interface Delamination In Honeycomb Frp Sandwich Panels, Weiqiao Wang May 2004

Cohesive Zone Model For Facesheet -Core Interface Delamination In Honeycomb Frp Sandwich Panels, Weiqiao Wang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The focus of this dissertation is on developing efficient modeling techniques to study facesheet-core interface delamination in honeycomb fiber-reinforced polymer (HFRP) sandwich panels. Delamination problems are usually treated from a fracture mechanics point of view. However, interface delamination is generally very complex in nature and difficult to solve, because it involves not only geometric and material discontinuities, but also the inherently coupled Mode I, II and III fracture in layered material systems attributed to the well-known oscillatory singularity nature of the stress and displacement field in the vicinity of the delamination crack tip. One of the key issues in this …

Effects Of Drought On The Growth Of Young And Mature Temperate Forests In West Virginia, Nicholas R. Doner

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Recent research suggests that the temperate deciduous forests of the eastern United States may have played a significant role in the sequestration of atmospheric carbon dioxide over the last 100 years. However, little is known about the role of forest management and climatic variability on the productivity of these forests. The purpose of this study was to determine the variation in aboveground production between two different aged forest stands and to evaluate the effect of drought on inter-annual variation in productivity. Aboveground net primary production (ANPP) was compared with precipitation and the Palmer Drought Severity Index to determine the effects …

Evaluation Of Moment Redistribution For Hybrid Hps 70w Bridge Girders, Lili Yang May 2004

Evaluation Of Moment Redistribution For Hybrid Hps 70w Bridge Girders, Lili Yang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Recent studies have demonstrated that the use of hybrid steel bridge I-shaped girders (specifically sections incorporating Grade 50 webs and High Performance Steel (HPS) 70W flanges) can produce steel weight savings and overall design economy for a wide range of typical steel bridge superstructures. Additionally, recent research at WVU in collaboration with others has led to proposed simplified moment redistribution techniques that have been adopted by AASHTO. These procedures are similar in nature to existing limits that permit up to 10% of the maximum factored negative bending moments to be redistributed to positive bending regions in members comprised of compact …

Three Essays On Transfers, Trade Policy And Welfare, Jonathan Munemo May 2004

Three Essays On Transfers, Trade Policy And Welfare, Jonathan Munemo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The objective of this dissertation is to incorporate foreign capital goods and underemployment in the welfare analysis of transfers and trade policies. We build a two-good, two-country general equilibrium model, which takes into account the use of foreign capital in the import competing sector of a developing country. The developing country receives transfers in the form of financial resources or capital goods from a developed country. Financial transfers induce changes in commodity terms of trade, which in turn affects capital inflows and the price of imported capital. The welfare effect of financial transfers is considered in the context of induced …

Cascade Radical Cyclizations Of Benzannulated Enyne-Allenes And Development Of New Synthetic Strategies For Novel Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds, Yonghong Yang May 2004

Cascade Radical Cyclizations Of Benzannulated Enyne-Allenes And Development Of New Synthetic Strategies For Novel Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds, Yonghong Yang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The cascade radical cyclization of benzannulated enyne-allene generated in situ from enediynyl propargylic alcohols promoted by thionyl chloride via an SNi' reaction provides an efficient synthetic pathway to 11H-benzo[b]fluoren-11-ols and related compounds. The simplicity of the synthetic sequence and the mildness of the reaction condition make this cascade reaction sequence useful for the construction of polycyclic aromatic compounds. Interestingly, when this strategy was employed for the systems having two benzannulated enyne-allene units, it was quite unexpected that the reaction sequence led to the formation of highly twisted 1,1'-dialkyl-9,9'-bifluorenylidenes involving an unusual cleavage of a benzene ring, and spiro[1H-cyclobut[ a]indene-1,9'-[9H]fluorenes] along …

Critical Features Of Antigen-Specific And Allospecific Recognition By Cytotoxic T Lymphocytes, Marc A. Frankenberry May 2004

Critical Features Of Antigen-Specific And Allospecific Recognition By Cytotoxic T Lymphocytes, Marc A. Frankenberry

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In general, CD8+ T lymphocytes respond to a single class I MHC/peptide complex, a phenomenon known as "MHC self-restriction". We previously reported that CD8+ CTLs from C57BL/6 mice were restricted to both H-2Kb and H-2Db when responding to the horse cyt c-derived peptide, p41--49. In Part I of this dissertation, we examine structural features of H-2Kb/cyt c and H-2Db/cyt c complexes responsible for dual recognition. B6.H-4.1c, a representative cloned CTL, was induced by similar concentrations of native peptide added to either H-2Kb- or H-2Db-expressing targets. Furthermore, the dissociation rates for both H-2Kb/cyt c and H-2D b/cyt c were comparable, but …

Insertion Of Genes And Operons Into The Escherichia Coli Genome Through Targeted Recombination, Dennis Coss

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A method whereby DNA sequences of varying size may be accurately inserted into pre-determined locations within the Escherichia coli genome was developed. Using a binary vector system that takes advantage of either the E. coli RecET enzyme tandem or bacteriophage lambda's Redalphabeta recombinatory proteins, this method has the benefits of being both inducible and self-degrading, thereby offering a level of control to the experimenter as well as alleviating any problems that may be associated with leaving residual DNA in the bacterium. To demonstrate the usability of this system, two antibiotic resistance genes, as well as the pyrroloquinoline quinone (pqq) and …

Formal Total Synthesis Of Carbazole Alkaloids And Attempted Synthesis Of 1-Substituted β-Carbolines., Xiaomei Yu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A mild and efficient route for the synthesis of substituted carbazolones has been developed. This novel procedure includes two consecutive palladium-catalyzed reactions, an intermolecular Stille coupling followed by an intramolecular reductive Nheteroannulation. This new approach was successfully applied to the formal total synthesis of several naturally occurring carbazole alkaloids including clausenol, clausenine, clausalene and glycozoticine. These new syntheses are generally effective and produce carbazolones in high overall yields. In addition, all attempts to apply a similar method to the synthesis of 1-substituted βcarbolines produced impure products.

A Study In The Process Modeling Of A Fuel Cell/Microturbine Hybrid System Under Ambient Conditions., Michael S. Shelton

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

As energy demands increase and the associated costs increasing with the demand, newer energy alternatives are becoming more important to society. Although not new, fuel cell technology is taking a lead role in the quest for a cleaner and less expensive energy source. High efficiencies on the order of 50% are now possible with stand-alone fuel cells. When coupled with a microturbine, efficiencies of around 70% may be expected. However, the fuel cell/microturbine hybrid has inherent problems of stability and unpredictable response to adverse transients that first must be addressed to make this technology viable. The National Energy Technology Laboratories …

Enhanced Solids Removal Design Based On Characterization Of Quiescent Zone Hydrodynamics In Flow-Through Aquaculture Systems., Andrea T. Rumberg

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Typically, solids removal in flow-through aquaculture systems consists of movement of solids to a quiescent settling chamber from which they are removed after settling. Commonly used solids removal processes are time and labor intensive and generally inefficient. Due to expected increases in federal effluent discharge regulations, development of efficient quiescent zones is essential to future growth of the aquaculture industry. However, before alternate designs were considered, hydrodynamic properties of traditional systems needed studied to adequately establish baseline characteristics. Characterization was achieved using an Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV), which measured velocity in three dimensions. Solids settling properties were characterized using specific …

Pseudo Dynamic Metrics: Early Assessment Of Dynamic Behavior Of Software Systems., Rajesh Gunnalan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Software Metrics have become an integral part of software development and are used during every phase of the software development life cycle. Research in the area of software metrics tends to focus predominantly on static metrics that are obtained by static analysis of the software artifact. These static metrics are readily available through automated tools and are widely used. However software quality attributes such as performance, reliability and error rates depend on the dynamic behavior of the software artifact. Hence, estimating software quality attributes based on dynamic behavior (dynamic metrics) of software system is more accurate and realistic. Dynamic metrics …

A Product Of Mexico: Truly Mexican Taste?, Maria E. Cazares Jan 2004

A Product Of Mexico: Truly Mexican Taste?, Maria E. Cazares

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Because people of all races, creeds and colors tend to view the world about them through their own eyes, or through the lenses of their own cultures (Fellows, 1972, p.39), it is logical to think that all kinds of visual expression differs from one culture to another, and that graphic design is not an exception. Coming from a place so rich in ancient and modern culture as is Mexico, I have been able to enjoy two very different experiences in a foreign country. On one hand, I came to the United States filled with the essence of being Mexican, and …
